From: mcarr@tessi.com (Mark Carr) Subject: FS: SONY D7 Date: Mon, 22 Sep 97 10:57:33 PDT I am selling this unit so I can upgrade to a D-100 I have owned this unit since March of 1997. I purchased it from the original owner, who purchased it from OADE brothers in 1995. When I bought it in March, it had less than 100 hrs. on the heads. I have used it for about 50 hrs max this summer for a total of less than 150 hrs. I havn't used 90meter tapes in it and neither did the original purchaser. I have never had any problems with it. It works perfect and looks perfect, although thier are a few light scratches in the plastic display window. Nothing unusual though. I have the original AC power supply, the deck, the little case, and the manual is en route from the original owner to me right now. I am asking $400 plus shipping. Please don't offer less than $375. I will accept the highest offer in a few days.... Regards, Mark Carr mcarr@tessi.com 503-672-8704 WK 503-293-6096 HM

To:doug@oade.com Subject: 90 meter DDS tape Dear Doug I am not sure where you are getting your information from, we actually only recommend our DAT tape for DAT machines, there is no benefit at all in using DDS tape, as the formulation is different, and that particular product is designed for Data Storage. From: John Fitzpatrick <jwf@aretha.jax.org> Subject: DAT Newby ISO Shows Date: Mon, 22 Sep 1997 16:35:47 -0400 Well, after weeks (if not months) of debating going to DAT vs. staying with analog, I've finally decided to take the plunge and purchased a Tascam DA-20mkII (next unit in a month or so). While my analog collection contains many fine shows (800+ hrs), I'm now realizing that I have to start all over again with the new media. Soooooo, I am formally asking for a little help in getting the transition started via the blanks, thanks, & postage routine. If any kind soles would be willing to help out with GD/JG/Dylan, it would be very appreciated and I'll recipricate the kindness by providing a D>A offer to the newgroup for each DAT received in return. I'm hoping to get a few choice shows that will allow me to get into the cloning mode once the second deck arrives so I won't have to bother for tapes in the future. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. Peace....Fitz... ===================================================== John W. Fitzpatrick, P.E. From: Cassette House <artmuns@tape.com> Subject: MasterDat Sale, Site update and Internet Magazine Date: Mon, 22 Sep 1997 15:30:32 Hi Folks, I'm having a sale on our 180 minute MasterDATs. Regular price is $5.00 at 10. The sale price is $4.50 at 10 and $4.25 at 50. You may combine lengths on the MasterDATs for the lower pricing. The MasterDATs have been a great tape for us. They are used by many recording studios, radio stations and of course DAT-Heads! I've upgraded the ordering system on our site so it should be much easier. You can also search the catalog of products now. The address is http://www.tape.com. Last but not least. There is a nice article on Cassette House (and 2 other Internet success stories) in the October issue of Internet Magazine, a Ziff-Davis publication. Our success would not have been possible without the support we have received from DAT-Heads, starting way back in 1989! Thanks to all Art

I should be able to get most of the acts on Saturday, but I then have to go to Brad at the Axis. I'll probably not get to go to much on Sunday, so if any DAT-Head is going, I'd be interested in getting the sets from Barenaked Ladies, Big Head Todd and Sarah McLachlan. Here are the details. From: bmilner <bmilner@netcom.com> Subject: Harsh, glassy and other relevant words Date: Mon, 22 Sep 1997 14:45:20 -0700 (PDT) I just saw a post from Max that provoked a response. I don't understand how one could deny the usefulness of using terms like Harsh, glassy, and glare in describing audio - in general and especially digital audio. I don't mind your accusing the press of being dinosaurs, that's a whole other issue but for those of us who can hear the difference between digital formats and A/D & D/A converters, those words are pretty descriptive and useful. I have a Sony A6 DAT machine (among others) and find it's sound harsh and glare-y compared with other DAT machines I have heard. I sounds slightly metallic and brash in the treble. The thing might measure flat but it still sounds tipped up and thin to me compared to more expensive digital products. Digital has a bunch of known artifacts. Just listen to first generation CD players compared to even the $70 players now and you can hear them. What's to say the difference won't be as dramatic in a few more years? I hear those artifacts (and others in the chain) often as a strident harsh sound. I hear digital distortion as metallic and I hear jitter and a irritating hashy sheen over the music. It's fatiguing too in the long term. Perhaps you are suggesting there are better adjectives to describe these sounds and I might agree if you would suggest some. If you simply can't hear the difference in various digital set-ups then that's one thing. Some people think all guitar amps sound the same too for some reason. (?) But, don't deny the usefulness of those words to describe what many of us do hear. Brandon Milner bmilner@netcom(dot)com ---------

Does making a >profit off of one CD make it any less "Bootlegging"? Hmmm..... >"one off bootlegging" Not to be a prick, but mastering a CD takes a heluva lot more time and effort than copying any tapes... If people want to offer the service to others for a small profit for the time that it takes to di it, then let them. But if you want to start one-offing CDs for me at blanks+postage, I have about 20 tapes I want to get put on CD. When will you start? (Oh, if you don't have a CD-writer, and the soundcard and all, then it's only a few hundred dollars extra to start doing that, on top of the cost of the DAT player, digicables, etc...) Anyway, I was wondering if someone out there could carefully outline the appropriate way to manually clean my decks. I know to use foam swabs but there's where my knowledge ends. The decks in question are the DA-P1 and the DA-20. It would be useful to know what cleaner to use, etc., etc. I have a wet and dry cleaner here but, I don't trust them. A URL where this information exists would be useful as well....if one exists. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Tony SugarNuggs@aol.com
