From: Andrew Loewenstern <andrew_loewenstern@il.us.swissbank.com> Subject: Terrapin Tapes Thing Date: Fri, 5 Dec 97 10:51:50 -0600 Hey folks, with all this talk about Terrapin vs. other vendors, nobody has mentioned a major advantage of buying from Terrapin in a market where most of the vendors all have the same or very close to the same products at the same prices: If Terrapin does put you on hold, at least you get to listen to some groovy tunes! ...and isn't that what it's all about? :-) andrew
From: "Ken, the DooDah Man" <ken@webjams.com> Subject: DooDah Trees Opens the "Oldies Forest" Date: Fri, 05 Dec 1997 22:09:55 -0600 Hey Now. DooDah Trees "Oldies Forest" is now accepting applications. The show is Neil Young & Crazy Horse 11/22/76 (early show) at Boston Music Hall, Audience Reel > DAT. Quality is *outstanding*. The seed was provided by Ken Hays/Terrapin tapes...official sponsors of DooDah Trees...thanks y'all! DooDah Trees "New Forest" will accept applications for the Ominous Seapods show 11/25/97 @ Bogies in Albany, NY until Monday morning. The show came off a separate SBD mix > DAT, and we got a *loaner* of the only recording of this show destined for a video (thanks Big Daddy Seapod and Stan Lobitz). DooDah Trees "Dead Forest" will announce it's first tree shortly... Each forest is a separate entity. You can join any or all as a Permanent or Temporary member. Permanent members *automatically* roll over to the next tree in that particular forest. Temp's do not. You can come and go from any forest as often as you like, provided you keep your commitments to the tree...and DooDah Code runs a tight ship, so if you're not serious don't bother :) We are accepting DAT and analog, branch and leaf positons. To join, go to our web site (URL Below) and take the link to DooDah Trees. NOTE: *NO* current members have been rolled over to the "Oldies Forest", so everybody must sign-up to be included. Keep on Truckin' on.... -- Browse by our #1 Ranked site http://www2.netdoor.com/~kensorce -- With the help of God and two friends Ken, the DooDah Man
From: Ray Peck <rpeck@no-spam-rpeck.com> Subject: looking for a DAT -> CD-R digital transfer Date: Fri, 5 Dec 1997 21:54:00 -0800 I've been waiting for a *very* long time for the Event Electronics Layla card to come out, and in that time (believing their schedule) I made a committment to another musical mailing list to make a members' CD. I'm at then end of my rope, since they assurred me a couple weeks ago that it would be shipping last friday. Needless to say. . . I can do the editing and burning and touching up and all that, but I can't get the raw bits onto the initial CD-R from the DAT. If you can do this for a reasonable fee or trades or whatever, please contact me asap. I've got a ~600-item DAT list or $ for compensation. Thanks. Oh, high-quality sample-rate-conversion will be required. Some tracks will be 44.1 and some will be 48. ========== Note: my email address is hacked as an anti-spam measure. From: Ray Peck <rpeck@no-spam-rpeck.com> Subject: Cloning Rig UPS Date: Fri, 5 Dec 1997 23:27:21 -0800 >I've decided to buy a dedicated UPS for my cloning machines. Yes, I run my decks, my video equipment, and each of my computers from APC UPS boxes. They're great. For this purpose, though, the thing to watch out for is the output waveform. The "Back-UPS" and "Smart-UPS VS" both run 8-bit stepped output waveforms, which have a lot of distortion. I was very converned about running that into linear power supplies like the audio and video equipment has, so I went for the Smart-UPS models, which have true sinewave output. Nice units. If you buy 'em at CompUSA with a company discount you'll save a *ton* of money (like >$100 per box for the $450 Smart-UPS units). ========== Note: my email address is hacked as an anti-spam measure. From: bruce quaglia <bruce.quaglia@m.cc.utah.edu> Subject: new/non-trader would like Dave Mathews? Date: Sat, 6 Dec 1997 01:23:47 -0700 (MST) Hi...I started reading this digest mostly to inhale whatever technical info I could (and I have!). But the more I hear you folks talk about tapes you're trading the more I'm itching to get into that. My request: I'd really love some live Dave Mathews; I have nothing to offer in return yet (don't even have two decks at the moment); but I would gladly send you blank dats and would most certainly remember the favor down the road when I'm able to. Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this, email me if you'd consider helping me out. -Bruce Quaglia bruce.quaglia@m.cc.utah.edu

From: Micheal Miller <mcmiller@access.digex.net> Subject: SPAM from american-digital Date: Sat, 6 Dec 1997 10:31:29 -0500 (EST) When I subscibed to this list, there was no mention that my name and email address would be stolen and used to send commercial SPAM. The first time I recieved unsolicited email from A-D, I responded and asked that they remove me from their list. Now, I am getting multiple copies of their "news letter" which is really not much of a news letter but is just one long advertisement. Now my responses to them bounce. Hey Dan! Hey Larry! Wake up you two clowns. I'll not be buying anything from you because you steal email addresses and send unsolicited commercial spam. TAKE ME OFF YOU SPAM LIST NOW! My needs are more than satisfied by the vendors who don't feel it neccessary to send multiple copies of trash to my mailbox. michael, (just now jumping on that vendor slammin band wagon)

Conversion from one to the other is possible. (For example, you can be going coax IN, but utilize the optical OUT.) > It is portable! (It uses a 9V.) > An indicator light to make known that errors have occurred during the transfer. Somehow I lost the "door" that encloses the battery. I have been using a wide rubber band to hold the battery in. I will enclude the rubber band at no additional cost. :-) :-) The reason for selling...ever since I bought my mics I have had no need for it. I am asking $120. From: Bryan Fox <foxey@pacbell.net> Subject: Extended warranty questions Date: Sat, 06 Dec 97 16:43:17 -0500 -- [ From: Bryan Fox * EMC.Ver #2.5.02 ] -- I finally got my IDS extended warranties in the mail today that I bought from Terrapin back in April. No big deal. I'm sure many others on this list have warranties that they also bought through Terrapin. As I'm reading the terms and conditions on the back, I came across the section on exclusions and limitations. To quote part of it: The Agreement does not cover products used commrcially; failure of the product due to operation under conditions other than those for which it was designed; installation or setup cost; diagnostic charges; pickup and delivery charges; periodic checkups and/or maintenance; loss of use of the product; products not originally covered by a manufacturer's warranty; and failures outside the United States......... And it goes on. My question here surrounds the "periodic checkups and/or maintenance" part. What I'm wondering is, does this provision exclude getting my heads cleaned? Seems like it does. Does this provision exclude my heads being replaced when they wear out? I don't know. In the beginning of this section, under Your Benefits From This Agreement, it says "The Selling Dealer as shown on the reverse side of this Agreement will pay on your behalf the cost of labor and repair or replacement parts in the event your product fails to operate as a result of a manufacturer's defect. This Agreement covers all parts and labor unless stated otherwise on the reverse side of this Agreement, or excluded in Item 3 below." Well, I then go down to part A or Item 3, and it says: "The following costs are your responsibility: Repair or replacement of parts normally designated to be replaced periodically or consumed during the life of the product.....". As far as I know, DAT heads are known to wear down with use and need replacement after a finite period of time. So it would seem that replacing worn heads is not covered in this policy. BUT......when I bought the warranty from Terrapin, and again when I asked on a later date, I was told that both head cleanings and head replacement were covered. So........has anyone had any experience with this? Has anyone here tried to use their warranty to get their heads replaced for free, or to get them cleaned, and gotten turned down? Or have you succeeded in coming away with your wallet as fat as it was before? I'm just trying to get an idea of what people's experiences have been in the past, particulary if it's with the same IDS company. Gives me a bit of a leg to stand on (or no leg to stand on) when I ask them to cover the cost of cleanings and new heads. Oh, BTW, I have a Tascam DAP-1 with approx. 250 hours on it (hasn't needed to be cleaned yet) and a Panasonic SV-3800 with over 1500 hours on it (already been cleaned once, at about 850 hours, because of diginoise, at a cost to me of about $120). Both of these decks were bought back in April. On an interesting side note, I also have a Sony DTC-790, which I bought March '96 from The Good Guys, and got their extended warranty. After approx . 2000 hours (conservative estimate), I started to get diginoise and had to get the heads cleaned, which the warranty from Good Guys covered completely. Their warranty also covers head replacement. Oh, and the warranty is for 6 years and cost me about $80 at the time of purchase. After another 750 or so hours on the deck since the end of September (damn I'm spinning a lot of tapes), it's still going strong. Probably the only piece of Sony equipment I've ever owned that's worked this well... Anyway, thanks for listening, if you can help, please let me (and the list, as I'm sure there are many people here who are in the same situation) know. Thanks. Bryan
