From: "John Blackmore" <blackmor@iconn.net> Subject: D>A Etiquette Questions Date: Fri, 6 Mar 1998 14:34:12 -0500 Soon after introducing myself to DAT, I made a massive D>A offer. Now that I'm in the middle of it, I'm finding that on occasion I zone out/get preoccupied and miss the analog flip, so the last song on the side is cut off. I include the entire song on the next side, but how does one handle this? I've just been leaving a note like "sorry I f'ed up the flip - it's around 38:35", or something like that. I can't imagine anyone generous enough to start over, and I refuse to believe this doesn't happen to anyone else! Is a note even necessary? Another related question - does it make sense for a lowly unidecker to start an analog tree (or vine/weed/whatever-the-hell-all-this-crap-is)? I got too too many responses this time, and I hate turning lots of eager fans down. Just wondering what some opinions are. -- John Blackmore blackmor@iconn.net P.S. - Outlook 98 is giving me an extraordinary amount of grief, so if this gets posted 6 times, I truly am sorry.

From: pkmin@rsc.rockwell.com Subject: Whoops - I didn't send my final version Date: Fri, 6 Mar 1998 12:42:50 -0800 I just realized that I sent the draft before my final version. "(more of a glaze due to heating effects and the materials involved and heating effects)" should have read "(more of a glaze due to heating effects and the materials involved)" I will compare what I sent to my finalized paper hard copy and if anything is significantly different (the above is not significant but it did make me realize I didn't send my final version) I will let you know. Thank you for allowing the bandwidth for that. I really appreciate it and hope that by reading it some of you will have more of an open mind. I seem to be in the minority here (materials/mechanical backround) while most of you appear to be EE/computer people. peace, Pete
From: SCOTT JAMES ROBERT <jscott@ucsub.Colorado.EDU> Subject: multiple miking technique Date: Fri, 6 Mar 1998 14:57:06 -0700 (MST) Provided my relative inexperience, I thought perhaps someone could offer some insight on multi-track room recording. I am recording various arrangements of musicians for a film soundtrack. Time sync is not an issue as various passages of music will simply be matched up by ear, later on and in a city far, far away. I'm simply laying down the tracks, not being involved in the mix-down. I have at my disposal a DA-88, a Grace 8-channel pre-amp, plenty of Audio Magic cable, and pairs of Geffel omni's, AKG 480 ck61's and 63's, the Schoeps VMS system with an 8 and a 21 (sub-card setup), and possibly a pair of U-87's for vocals. Regardless, all recording will occur in the Boulder, Co Contemporary Art Museum's upstairs loft, a "live" sounding room (wood) that is roughly rectangular in shape. I would like to use both near-field and back-of the-room miking for mostly acoustic-ish music. Questions I have are: What mics would be best suited for where? Will I have problems with time alignment and phase? How does spaced omni's hung about 5 feet out and the VMS at the back of the room sound for most jazz trio and quartet stuff? What about when I have to do percussion groups? Should I be entering the DA-88 at +4 or -10? It's my understanding the DA-88 requires different cables (non-XLR) to run in at +4. I am by no means a studio engineer, just a taper who's trying to help a friend out. Any comments, possible problems I might run into, or simple advice would be welcome either posted in the group or as e-mail direct to me. Thanks guys. From: Chris Trumbore <cdt@op.net> Subject: Re: **ATTN SxSW** Date: Fri, 06 Mar 1998 17:13:34 -0500 Seth Breidbart <sethb@panix.com> wrote: >>If anyone is caught >>taping at any of our venues, all DATs and tapes including "blanks" will >>be confiscated and the taper will be ejected. > >"Confiscation" of another's property without due process of law is >considered Grand Larceny. Let's not forget that most people won't willingly hand over their property to a thief, and once these criminals threaten anyone with bodily injury, they've moved up to the category of "robbery" (a second degree felony in Texas). Moreover, if the value of the property stolen is greater than $1500, like many taping rigs, the theft will automatically be a "state jail felony" under Texas law, regardless of whether or not a threat is used. Finally, if, as Wally alleges, staff members have already decided that taping equipment will be "confiscated", they've committed criminal conspiracy pursuant to section 15.02 of the Texas penal code, "criminal conspiracy". Interested tapers should look at a few other sections of the Texas penal code: section 29.02 "robbery", section 31.03, "theft", and 31.08, "value" (i.e., assessing value to stolen property) -- Chris Trumbore cdt@op.net

They are a higher authority, you know. >Sorry, but I dont write the rules, I was merely pointing them out and >warning people of the consequences if they are caught taping without >permission. What you "pointed out" is something called a "crime". In a previous post I've quoted the specific sections of the Texas penal law which you and your little friends have already violated, and will violate if they proceed in the comission of the crimes which you alleged on the DAT-heads mailing list. >Ya know, only the band owns the copyrights >to the music, and if they dont want you to tape, then TOUGH. suffer the >consequences as I did at Jazz Fest 96 when my equipment was thrown onto >the ground and my tapes were snapped right in my face as I was booted. From: pkmin@rsc.rockwell.com Subject: Ticketmaster Date: Fri, 6 Mar 1998 14:52:44 -0800 "Such monopolizing reminds me of Ticketmaster." Hey has anyone seen Ticketmaster's new ad campaign? "Ticketmaster Coming Soon To a Venue Near You Why Change?" I'm not gonna comment (do you think I could go off on them?) but will say that I am still trying (after *MUCH* time and effort) to get back $20 for when I purchased 4 tickets ($10 plus their ridiculous charges) only to get to the venue and told that myself and 3 friends from work would have to pay $5 more to get in since ticketmaster made a mistake. If it was $15 I *would*not* have bought the tickets. Not only that but the tickets said 8 pm and the show went on just before midnight (and I wouldn't have bought them had I known this). I seriously *wish* I would have recorded all the conversations I had with them. If so I'd make an MPEG3 and post it to the web. It would be the biggest crock of shit (you'd be laughing your asses off!!) anyone has ever heard (unless you've had similar experiences with them). Seriously. And I write this months after "cooling down". You should have seen me during the weeks right after it when I was trying to remedy the situation. I called *numerous* times, went back to the outlet where I got them, spent hours on hold(this is not an exageration and yes I know I'm crazy for doing so, but I'm a person of principle and wanted to see if it *actually*was* possible to solve this issue with them), got numerous beat around the bush stories(oh I don't have authority, you'll have to call back when/blah blah blah). Heck I'm still waiting for 2 of them to call me back. I gave them all the info they needed. They said they would solve the problem. I seriously give up. For crying out loud they couldn't even find the show in their computer system unless they had some bullshit code number. Not to mention my phone bills for the hours on hold. Or my time. Sincerely Peter Min (knowing them, I'm probably cut off from tickets now)

The HOB had a pair of quite nice looking mics set up hanging from the roof of the hall, wired to the soundboard area. The taper had been allowed to patch into the feed from these mics and the soundboard guy was watching over his deck to make sure it wasn't stolen while the taper went up front to enjoy the show. I suppose they could have given the taper a soundboard feed, but barring that it seems like a pretty friendly arrangement, and perhaps even a good compromise to avoid micstands obstructing people's view. I was also convinced that I could have easily stealthed the show if I had wanted to. > >Cheers, >Bart Wise That has not been the experience at the Los Angeles HOB. Did you talk to that taper, was he with the band? At the LA HOB they wanted the one of the road crew for Zero to bust someguy holding up a pair of mics. Someone in the audience with a Zero backstage pass told the security guy that he was with the band and it was okay that the guy could tape. The Zero guy told me at the Ventura show that the HOB has a standard thing in their contract with the artist that no taping will be allowed except for what the HOB gets. That way they can have exclusive rights to show it. I know people who refuse to go to the HOB because of this taping policy. Charles
From: wallyski@texas.net Subject: SxSW and some interesting opinions Reply-To: wallyski@texas.net Date: Fri, 06 Mar 1998 19:58:38 -0600 Well, its really simple. We have secured rights at Emo's, Electric Lounge, La Zona Rosa, Stubbs, and 4 or 5 others. I will post them as soon as my boss gives me the full list. The point is, tot hose of you who have never experienced SxSW, its crowded and things change on the hour, every hour. Its not convenient at all to have people show up every hour to try to get a ptch. Not gonna happen. As far as the confiscation of tapes is concerned, we will fully reimburse anyone for the cost of the blanks, if it even happens. The simple fact is that if the band only wants us to have the DAT for internet broadcast, then thats the way its going to be. Im tired of hearing groaning from some of the "dat-heads" on this list. If you want to get technical, we can. Many of the "dat-heads" break the law often. Bootlegging for profit can arise from the aquisition of live recordings that are not supposed to be in circulation. Thats why we have secured the rights as we have. Note- we do not have rights to any band that did not give us permission to be the sole holders (with the exception of the band) of their music. If anyone has a problem with any of this, i apologize. Thats the way things are being run this year. Any questions, please feel free to email me. Again, i reiterate that the BAND/ARTIST controls the music. If you have permission, we can work out a system of patches. no problem However, without permission, tough luck if a bouncer bears down on you. Thanks for the bandwidth, and I do hope to see many of you at the festival. Wally

A buddy of mine is a City Attorney in Texas. According to him, if they take your equipment or tapes, that is called theft. They do have the right to eject you from the venue, but not to take your equipment. Jim
