trade for a few crispy Dead DSBD circa '87-90.

Pete, everything you say is true, however I'd like to add one little
thing.
In an article on this subject which I found somewhere in my archives,
TDK claims that the 'green' (cyanine) discs
are more versatile than the rest. Why? Because phthalo-
cyanines (gold) are very demanding and require a laser beam
power within certain narrow limits (cannot remember
the exact figures) to record properly. They do have the
longest shelf life. Cyanines, on the other hand, last a
little bit less but are able to accept larger variations in the
writing laser - which guarantees compatibility with almost
all CD recorders - and as we all know different manufacturers often spec
their products differently.
Just my 2 c on the subject. :)
Cheers.

I bought a $100 pair of Sony mdr-V600 headphones about 6 weeks ago with
the intention of trying them out for a while and returning them at the
end of the month but ended up getting what I deserved and missed the 30
day deadline so now I'm stuck with 'em. I don't really have a need for
such expensive headphones, so I figured I'd try to sell them. Payed
$100 and used them 5 times at most, always at home. They're great
'phones, portable folding, good isolation, and quite comfortable
taboot. They also come with a soft carrying case. I'll take $75 for
them and pay priority shipping to you. Might be interested in a trade,
not looking to dicker over the price though. If you have any questions
feel free to ask.

Wondering if anyone has used or know anything about the "Maxi Sound 64 Home
Studio Pro" soundcard for the PC.
For around 200 UK Pounds it is the only card I have seen that offers true
digital SP/DIF Input and Output at 44.1kHz and a 50 MIPS on-board DSP
offering real-time EQ, reverb and chorus effects as well as various
glod-plated line-ins etc.
For the price it seems amazing and a great way to get into post-production
of DAT recordings for those of us on a budget. It has receievd some great
reviews but are there any points that I should be aware of/questions I
should ask/features it should have that I need to know if considering this
card?

I know the situation at the HOB Cambridge JS show - the taper actually ended
up with a sbd; at first it seemed like there were no board patches to be
had, so the house mic thing was a compromise, which was rectified. A bit of
the house mic was mixed in, so I guess it's technically a Mix:D tape.
He is a friend of the soundman & was basically taping for the soundman.
There was also a friend of Jack Casady's there, doing an aud tape.
At HOB LA, the same taper had an experience with Hot Tuna taping on Dec. 19.
Arriving at 2 PM while the band was unloading, he approached Michael
Falzarano, asking permission to tape (he's very polite & never stealths).
Michael said :"You know, we allow taping, but then it's up to each venue".
Then Michael & Harvey Colman, the band's road manager, went to the trouble
to find out how the HOB would treat the taper : the OK for taping was given
by someone unseen.
The taper arrived an hour before the show, but HOB staff seemed to think
that taping would be from some sort of hand-held unit, with "built-in mics",
& were't going to let him in with his stand, DA-P1, etc.
He asked them to call Harvey, but instead, they simply had him sign a
release form & let him set up.
Later the HOB lighting man asked him to move his stand about 3 inches .
All in all, they were very polite & accomodating.
But then, so was the taper.
Happy taping,
Frank.

>I'm a little confused about this. I went to the HOB in Cambridge, MA last
night to see Jefferson Starship and met a DAT taper there. The HOB had a
pair of quite nice looking mics set up hanging from the roof of the hall,
wired to the soundboard area. The taper had been allowed to patch into the
feed from these mics and the soundboard guy was watching over his deck to
make sure it wasn't stolen while the taper went up front to enjoy the show.
I suppose they could have given the taper a soundboard feed, but barring
that it seems like a pretty friendly arrangement, and perhaps even a good
compromise to avoid micstands obstructing people's view. I was also
convinced that I could have easily stealthed the show if I had wanted to.>

That has not been the experience at the Los Angeles HOB. Did you talk to
that taper, was he with the band?
At the LA HOB they wanted the one of the road crew for Zero to bust someguy
holding up a pair of mics. Someone in the audience with a Zero backstage
pass told the security guy that he was with the band and it was okay that
the guy could tape.
The Zero guy told me at the Ventura show that the HOB has a standard thing
in their contract with the artist that no taping will be allowed except for
what the HOB gets. That way they can have exclusive rights to show it.
I know people who refuse to go to the HOB because of this taping
policy.Charles

Hi Mike (and all),
I saw your post in Dat-heads and wanted to let you know that we have a
pre-owned Oade deluxe M118 with several upgrades. It has NEW
rechargeable batteries, an improved battery level meter, a charging
indicator, and a recessed power switch. It was customized for use with
c460's but will also work well with blue lines and other mics that
don't require 48 volts. New, this unit was $1300.00 It has 20db fixed
gain unbalanced xlr outputs and balanced xlr inputs. $650.00 delivered.
We also carry Beyer, E.A.A., Sonosax, and the NEW Lunatec V2. See
details about these and all new and pre-owned, home and portable
recording equipment that we carry at http://www.henge.com/~sncsns or
send email to sncsns@henge.com NOT address above please.
We look forward to helping you with all of your recording needs.

I've got a philips 870 and its great (569 from am-dig). I was gonna get
a computer cd-r setup but didn't want to tie my computer up with
burning. The only drawback is the single speed recording (and the lack
of computer data cd burning). It can use the cheap media as well as
cd-rw. And resamples nicely from any dig input signal.
Unless you absolutely want to mess around in the dig. domain with your
recordings, or need to burn multiple copies of everything at 4X speed,
this deck will do the job. To me, it makes much more sense having a
standalone audio component than a PC based system.

Wrong to get what results? On what speakers in what room? Making EQ
adjustments on sub-par loudspeakers in a bad envionment is like painting a
portrait on a yellow or green canvas; your final product is "tinted' wrong.
You should be making decisions on a known-good reference loudspeaker of some
kind. And even then, all the eq in the world won't repair a poorly made tape.
In fact, I submit if you end up using a lot of analog EQ, you are adding
noise, distortion, lots of phase shift and other garbage that helps degrade
the product further.

Hi Kerry and all,
Some of you may have heard my initial impressions of the DA-302 and
some concerns about reliability. Of our first batch of DA-302s, there
were a few machines that misloaded tape. We are now using a machine
from a later batch and it (along with 85% of those we have sold) is
operating flawlessly. While there may be a complication in the
compatibility between Tascam and Panasonic decks, I find this to be a
really nice machine. Its features and capabilities far outway the
intitial problems we had.
They are currently priced at $1475.00 at Sonic Sense along with great
deals on other DAT machines and recording equipment.
We look forward to helping you with your recording needs.

Subject: Are tapers really a problem?
Date: Mon, 09 Mar 1998 12:10:37 -0800
Open letter to those who would ban taping:
I have been a musician/composer/tape recorder since the '60s. I respect
musician's and publisher's rights. I buy lots of CDs every year. I buy
sheet music. I spend money at live concerts. I have run my own full
time business. I know a lot about business and marketing. And I
utterly fail to see any real negative impact on the music industry by
tapers!
I honestly think that I would buy the same number of CDs and go to the
same number of concerts if there were no tapers in the world. I.e. I
still buy books of photographs, even though my wife and I both take a
lot of photographs with our own cameras.
Are you worried about lost sales? Out of all the people that buy CDs
and go to live concerts, how many go out and spend many hundreds of
dollars on DAT equipment, learn how to operate it, and then go to the
bother to tape? And of those, how many cause you to loose sales due to
trading? The guys that are trading are not doing it primarily to save
money; they are probable loosing money in the process.
The only legitimate concern that I can think of is if and when a taper
disturbs someone around them with their equipment. But I believe that
most tapers are considerate of other concert goers and do their best to
remain discrete.
I know that I am preaching to the choir by writing this to DAT Heads,
but purhaps someone with a different opinion will reconsider the issue
in a more reasonable light.
Sincerely,
Scott Daley
