Hi Folks,
O.K. call it a survey. I was just about to go ahead and buy a Sony
PCMR300 when I received this today from the Dat-Head list:
>Kevin said:
>hope this fixes the problem. Now I realize many people have voiced their
>opinions on r300 transport problems and all I know is what Paul told me and
>what I experienced with my deck. Paul tells me he has been seeing more and
>more r300's with similar problems as my r300. So it appears as though the
>r300 does have transport problems. Now I know the part numbers aren't the
>same...but different part numbers don't ensure different transport. I'll

>than someone who runs a company selling decks. That isn't a jab at anyone,
>its just a personal belief. Anyone who has experienced these things please
>speak up, I know many of you haven't but I'm sure many of you have. Thanks
If I could PLEASE get a cross section of replies concerning the R300s
transport reliability I would be very grateful. There are a few who have
emailed me re: the R300 and your opinions mean a lot to me but there's
nothing like feedback from a good cross section of users to get a clearer
picture.
Thanks Muchly,
Neil

They did a show in Aspen, at the close of the Comedy festival
It was taped for HBO narrowcast on March 21.
In the NYT of 3/9/98, the article closes with a quote, of Michael Palin,
referring to their deceased member Chapman's ashes, which play a part in
the show:
"Yeah, every group will want one now,
Their own dead member"

An Internet broadcast may be more democratic than DAT tape, but the
sound quality is on par with Alex Bell's first telephone.
If you really want people to hear the shows, instead of just
promoting a gimick, you should make DAT "pre-FM" masters as well as
the internet broadcast. And tree them.
(True, some 'net shows intended for high-bandwidth users sound
ok. But shows intended for modem reception sound like crap even if
you have a better connection).

I use the MW-D6C, but as this guy says... you don't need the best
deck, just one that's good enough, so I'd recommend the WM-D3. It's
half the size of the D6C, doesn't have Dolby C (which is important if
you plan to listen to the tapes, but not if they're for others), and
of course much cheaper. I'm pretty sure it has manual level
control and some sort of LED level display. You can buy them new
from J&R Music and other Sony dealers.

I've used the WM-D6C regularly with MA-110 tapes and Dolby C.
They sound great!
But for "tapes to go," use type II tapes and Dolby B.

If taping is all you're responsible for, why have you posted threats
that "if anyone is caught taping at any of our venues all DATs and
tapes, including 'blanks' will be confiscated". It's not your job to
make such threats, your job is "taping and/or mixing" ONLY. It sounded
like you were getting a big head with this job of taping SXSW, and
wanted to wield some power, but, as you can see, no one was impressed.
If you truly wanted to "pre-warn" DAT-Heads about taping not being
allowed, that would have been fine (though not needed), but instead you
made comments like "if you are planning on taping you MUST clear it
through us." Look at that statement, now tell me that doesn't sound
arrogant as hell. And seriously, to post such a threatening message to
DAT-Heads took some balls, you might as well have yelled the "N" word at
a Jesse Jackson rally. What were you thinking? BTW, you've done plenty
of stealth taping of bands that "don't want to be recorded", so it's
more than a little hypocritical for you to morally judge others for
stealth taping. Give us all a break, there IS a huge difference between
taping for pleasure and for profit.

The D8 handles 90m (and even 120m) tapes with 100% reliability.
There is some (legitimate) debate that the use of 90m tapes causes
excessive wear and results in the common 9month-1year wear-out we see
on these decks. (Using the D8 as a source for frequent cloning is
the real problem, IMHO).
The D100 is just adequate with 90m tapes. You can record on them,
but in playback, reverse-scanning can definately cause a problem.
(this problem will cause minor but permanaent tape damage!) This is
one of the main reasons I've kept a D8 as my personal deck.
If you listen mainly in a forward direction, the D100 is probably ok.
The WMDT1 playback deck is known to be *not reliable* on 90m tapes,
it can eat them.
