From: Jonas <jlb20@acpub.duke.edu> Subject: NC Tapers: shotgun mics needed Date: Tue, 10 Mar 1998 22:11:11 -0500 Ben Folds Five are coming to Duke University on the last day of classes in May. I want to get a good tape, so if anyone out there has some shotguns and the necessary components to feed a D8, I would love to borrow them or possibly meet you at the show for a patch. I will rent mics if necessary but would prefer not to. Thanks, Jonas

From: pkmin@rsc.rockwell.com Subject: Re:Theory on D7 diginoise Date: Tue, 10 Mar 1998 19:34:38 -0800 "From: Fred Jan Kraan <fjkr@cayennesoft.nl> Subject: Theory on D7 diginoise Date: Fri, 6 Mar 1998 08:42:53 +0100 (MET) Hi everyone! Having problems with diginoise on a D7 I came up with the following idea: Problem: The D7 plays once recorded tapes without problems, both 60m and 90m. When an once used tape is rerecorded, the D7 gives repetetive diginoise at the end of the tape, again on both 60m and 90m. Theory: My theory is that the new magnetic track does not completely erases the old one, probably traces are left between the new track. The tracking mechanism of the D7 is less than ideal due to size limitations, and it is confused by this remnants of this old recording, resulting in signal loss and diginoise. Playing the same tapes on a full size deck gives no problems. So the new track is there, but the D7 has problems 'tracking' it! Background info: The D7 is not used very intensively, maybe 5 to 10 hours a week, and has had a mayor repair at the local Sony repair centre last year. Summary: The theory predicts that the D7 has more problems with rerecorded tapes than new or bulk erased tapes. Comments on this are welcome. Greetings, Fred Jan Kraan P.S. I hope it is true. A bulk-erazor is cheaper than a better portable DAT :-)" Excellent post Fred. In fact (assuming your observations are correct and over a big enough sample size and that all other variable were held constant) this post has changed my opinion on bulk erasers (I used to think they were unnecesary). The main issue here is the D7/8's transport mechanism. Towards the end of a 3 hour tape it has trouble maintaining constant steady speed. Based on your observations, your theory makes sense to me. I love to see posts like this. People thinking. Pete ps could someone cut and paste the Mix magazines "dat copying" and "dat integrity" (or something like that)from Klay's site and email it to me in normal text form. Thanks.
From: Wagner One <wagner@teamschoeps.org> Subject: Old Taping Articles Date: Tue, 10 Mar 1998 21:48:33 -0500 I recently ran across some old recording articles while looking through a 1990 Dupree's. I took some time last weekend to make them available for those of you here that might get a kick out of seeing them (again?). It was right about the time that DAT was rearing it's ugly head, so it's a neat perspective... These must be the mics(isn't this a really really inexpensive mic?) which I've heard (I've never actually heard these tapes but would love to trade for any of these shows) made some really nice phish FOBs? I love it when people make killer tapes (esp FOBs) with very modest equipment. Home-brew mods make em all the sweeter! Pete

From: Erik Larson <tralfaz@qadas.com> Subject: In Denver and ready for a quick trade? Reply-To: tralfaz@qadas.com Date: Tue, 10 Mar 1998 21:24:17 -0700 Hey all. I'm looking to get rid of some extras I've got. They're all on 90 m Gold KAOs, and I'm looking for blanks of the same in trade. Some moe., LoS, WSP, Phish, Chief Broom, MMW, GD... a few others. I'd prefer a person-to-person swap. Everything else will soon be B+P for everyone. Thanks, Erik
From: "The 4D's" <dserafini@snet.net> Subject: 90M tapes in portables Reply-To: dserafini@snet.net Date: Wed, 11 Mar 1998 00:02:42 -0500 Any input on portable decks (Sony D-8, PCM-1, D-100,etc) that handle 90m tapes reliably? Yeah Jay, I have owned a d-7 (basically the same as d-8) for about 3 years (?) now and I run KAO 90 meters ALL THE TIME!! Despite all the (so called) "KAO Gunk" reports, that gets on the heads of the deck when using KAO tapes, I have had little to NO problems. Though the manual ( and most Tapers ) will NOT recommend this as "common practice." This is probably running my deck into the ground, but at this moment in time I frankly.... don't care! They [90m] have worked in the past so I take my chances. Note: the reference to the "KAO Gunk" is based on (I guess) the tape material not the actual LENGTH of the tape. Running 3 hr tape in a d-7 DOES put some unwanted stress on transport of the deck, especially during Ff and Rew mode! And remember-- Just 'cause MY d-7 has been taking 90 meters with out a hiccup, DOES NOT mean ANY one else's deck will do the same. Use at own risk! ~DAVE
From: "Shannon Tompkins" <shan.t@ix.netcom.com> Subject: ISO D6 analog deck Date: Wed, 11 Mar 1998 01:19:59 -0500 I enjoyed chaining my Sony D6 analog deck off my DAT decks when taping live shows but I traded my D6 for speakers. Now I miss the deck and am searching for a replacement. Does anyone have a used D6 for sale or know where I might still find a new D6? I am hoping J&R Music World still carries the discontinued decks but I don't have a catalog and J&R's online store currently excludes portables. Thank you much.

Fostex D-5 problem Date: Wed, 11 Mar 1998 01:36:31 -0500 (EST) It's possible that the tapes actually had something written on them that the Fostex thought was an End-ID. Could it fast forward after the tapes were rewritten? (Tapes with computer data often fool decks into thinking they have End-IDs.) Seth

From: pkmin@rsc.rockwell.com Subject: Re:Urgent to your Representative Date: Tue, 10 Mar 1998 22:45:55 -0800 "Please read; this affects us all: Congress has declared war on VCR's and PC's. A Clinton administration bill, H.R. 2281, containing restrictions on new devices that might be used for home recording has moved one step closer to becoming law. This bill would ban new generations of VCR's and personal computers with digital copying ability. NOTE: It will effectively take away the right of consumers to record in their homes. It is URGENT that you do something to stop this bill. Contact your Representative today and urge them to kill this bill. For more info, http://www.hrrc.org Don't say I don't warn you. Regards, Klay Anderson http://www.klay.com 1.800.FOR.KLAY" First let me say Klay I totally respect you for posting stuff like this! You seem to be the only person who makes this type of stuff available to the list. Back when I ripped apart all the "Burn your CD ads" (I dare you people to post similar ads with no restrictions now!!!!)on this list, a very big point I made in the numerous private emails I had with people were that there were some serious bills at the time which would endanger our hobby. Well guess what. They are now law!!!!! Its unfortunate that I never posted my thoughts on these bills publicly to the list (plenty of people on this list who had private emails with me will vouch for me though) but Fucking A people this shit is for real!!! Look into the future. Gee what's next (I'm fairly certain I know, but will not bring it up now). The problem is that we live in an unfair capitalistic society (capitalistic and unfair go hand in hand and this stems from the basic truth that greed appears to be an inherent trait in many and since this is inherent in many I'm not bitching over why its unfair but rather just saying that's just the way it is which I accept (after all its an inherent trait) Because of the brainwashed society we live in and the fact that most people either just don't care (maybe they realize things have gotten out of control so they just say Fuck It), or just don't think, its not too difficult to continue making the world less peaceful and more bullshit. Now I realize what I just said is a completely harsh and was presented in a very extreme way. BUT WHEN IT GETS DOWN TO IT, ITS THE TRUTH!!!!!!!!!! Passing that bill is preventing the progress of technology. People need to quit worrying about bullshit stuff, being so fucking anal, and fucking others over. Hollywood sucks and the only thing movies/TV (other than the Discovery channel and a very few others)do is teach bullshit and waste people's time when they should be using their mind (see how everything is a big spiraling circle, spiraling in the wrong direction that is), Peter Min (the above are merely *MY* thoughts) Thank for for the non-directly dat related content(but oh yes this IS INDEED DAT RELATED). THATS MY POINT. Everything is interelated and everything affects everything else. Higher consiousness.......
From: Jeff Bowen <jbowen@slonet.org> Subject: WM-D6C Date: Wed, 11 Mar 1998 01:28:21 -0800 (PST) so I'd recommend the WM-D3. I would not, The D6 is a lot better. I've had mine since early 1988 and taped a lot of shows. My biggest problem with the D3 is you have to turn the deck over to see both the tape and the level LEDs. The D6 has them both on the same side. Plus, the D3 is built in two halves and has a hinge in the middle. I talked to another taper once who told me about how a D3 came apart in his hands into two pieces. The D3 has No line out. Only a line in. So it must be used last in any daisy chain arrangement. The level indicaters glow with the intensity of the audio input on the D6. I don't think the D3 does this. The lights are either on or off. Also, I don't think the D3 takes metal tape. I've never owned a D3 but have friends who own them. It Will however make better recordings than a dictaphone! > > Hmmm... You're not interested in the BEST analog recorder (which as y'all > > know, IMNSHO is the PMD-430) Ha! The D5 is the BEST. The build quality on the 430 & 420 is poor. They are also hard to service. The 3 heads are it's best feature. > I've used the WM-D6C regularly with MA-110 tapes and Dolby C. > They sound great! Yes. The Dolby C is good but IMO Only good coming off of a soundboard or other high level source. I've never liked the results using the Dolby C for audience recordings. Sorry for the lack of DAT content but I wanted to comment on this. Thanks, Jeff

From: Olympian90 <Olympian90@aol.com> Subject: Has anyone experienced this/any idea what is wrong with these? Date: Wed, 11 Mar 1998 07:48:46 EST Hello. I wanted to post to the digest to see if anyone had experienced any of the following. I just had my D7 into the shop to have some cleaning/alignment in January of this year, and everything has been working smoothly, except for a recent incident. Each time I would try to load a dat tape into the machine, it would attempt to load, and power itself down. I tried this with a variety of tapes, and the same thing would occur. I was all ready to return the dat to get repaired under their 90 day warranty again, but decided to look in the D7 and moved one of the rollers and one of the rubber rollers, and it's worked fine since..was it simply a stuck roller? Secondly, I bought a Sony ES75 secondhand, and all appeared well; however, it needed to go into the shop for repair for the following items: 1)Even though the indicator light would recognize a 44.1 khz taped item in, it would freak out and play it, but with digital noise. 2)Things usually played fine, but some tapes would digitally skip all over right away, and some TDK dat tapes (which I know in general are lousy) wouldn't even play. 3)Digital clones for the most part played on the D7 and cloned into the ES75 were typically full of digital noise, and analogue to dat items recorded onto the ES75 would experience the same problems for some, not on others. I took it into the shop, and they in turn sent it to Sony. I have no idea on the cost, it'd be nice if anyone has any idea if this sounds like a head/alignment problem or ??? Finally, I'm looking into buying a cd writer/cdrw drive for the computer...what brands has everyone had the best experiences/most reliability with? I know making copies of cd's with the programs provided with the cd writers are easy, but how difficult is the whole process/what is the process of recording something onto to cdr from dat or a tape source, when you need to normalize (I know the program can do this) and clean up hiss, etc. I know there's a process of turning it into a wav, etc. Any help from the group/suggestion would be great... All The Best.
From: love-0nl@wellmet.or.jp (Masato Kato) Subject: Symphony Orchestra + Organ Date: Wed, 11 Mar 1998 23:02:03 +0900 Before going to see Aerosmith at Tokyo Dome, I taped philharmonic orchestra + organ on March 8. This was my first attempt to record serious music, and the result was exccelent. The show was Japan Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra + Keiko Inoue (organ player) playing the following pieces: J. S. Bach: Toccata and Fugue in D-Minor BWV. 565 (a) Organ Solo (b) Orchestrated version by L. Stokowski Saint-Saens: Cypres et Lauriers, pour orgue et orchestre op. 156 Vierne: Symphonie pour orgue No. 2 op.20 - Premier mouvement: Allegro Albinoni: Adagio for organ and strings Lespigi: I Pini di Roma (encore) Mascani: Interlude from "Cavaleria Lusticana" 'Cypres et Lauriers' was the very premier performance in Japan. As this was the stealth recording in the audience, coughs and other noise by the people around me at some points were unavoidable. I was as silent as a gravestone, in the fourth row center with a pair of Sanken COS-11PT's (+ handmade battery box) and Denon DTR-80P. Is anybody out there who tapes classical music? I am expecially looking for San Francisco Phil. Orch. + Bob Weir, Phil Lesh in June(?) 96. Masato Kato <LOVE-0NL@wellmet.or.jp> Love Minus Zero/No Limit

The sales man suggested >to purchase a better portable battery. What is wrong with the TASCAM >battery? What other brands should I look into? Hi Michael, I saw your post in Dat-heads and as a long time taper and Tascam user (and yes, a recording equipment dealer), I can vouch for the lack of reliability of the internal battery that Tascam supplies with the DA-P1. This battery may last the intended two hours specified in the manual but it is unlikely that you will get more than 1.5 hours after a few uses. DA-P1's are currently in stock for $1320 delivered. Battery systems like the Eco-Charge BETA run the DA-P1 for 5 hours, are well built and extremely reliable. Yes, you can find a somewhat less expensive option and building your own can save you money. However, many folks find that the Eco-Charge system is quite a value from Sonic Sense for $249.00 delivered with two five hour batteries, padded cases, and a full1 Amp charger that will charge your batteries to full capacity in 3-5 hours. For more details, check out our website at http://www.henge.com/~sncsns or send us email at sncsns@henge.com NOT address above please. We look forward to helping you with all of your recording needs.
