From: Mark McHarg <MGM@symbionics.co.uk> Subject: Re: Baking Tapes Date: Thu, 12 Mar 1998 15:30:03 -0000 LocoBrian@aol.com wrote: >While playing back the cassettes (which are old cheap Ampex >tapes) some of them intermittently begin making a high pitched >screeching sound that comes out of the speakers. This sounds like "TDK disease" which happens to aged cassettes, particularly TDKs. In addition to the screech coming out of the speakers, you can usually turn the volume down and hear the whine of the tape as it moves. With old TDK cassettes, this is apparently caused by the bubble sheets between the tape itself and the shell. As they age, they begin to stick and bind, so the tape vibrates as it moves. As the tape vibrates, it causes rapid tiny variations in tape-to-head speed. What you hear from the physical tape is the vibration of the tape. What you hear from the speaker is frequency modulation (intermodulation) due to the variation in tape-to-head speed. TDK disease can allegedly be cured by opening the cassette and transplanting the tape reels into a new shell. Another possibility is that the vibration is due to oxide build-up on the heads and tape guides, which can also cause sticking and binding. In my experience, 1980-vintage AMPEX reels are prone to oxide shedding, so their cassettes might be also. You can determine if this is the case by cleaning the heads before playing the tape. You will notice that the high end disappears as oxide builds up on the heads, preventing good tape-to-head contact. You will also notice that the heads get quite dirty. (use an unimportant tape for this test, obviously). If this is your problem (and it might be) baking might be the solution. Baking is a temporary cure for degradation of the binder which holds the oxide on the mylar tape. The two recipes I received for baking reels are: >Try this technique (developed by Ampex and Agfa >engineers) - bake your tapes in a convection oven (not the gas oven in the >kitchen, not the toaster oven - the heating elements are too intense and can >damage your tape) at 130 degrees Fahrenheit for 7 hours. This will restabilize >the binder that holds the oxide to the mylar for a period of about 2-3 weeks. >when baking more than one reel, stack them in the >oven with empty tape hubs between the reels as "spacers", to allow the hot, dry >air to circulate freely around the reels. and >Baking them for 3-4 hours at 50..65 degrees celsius >enabled them for playing once. 130 degrees F = 55 degrees C, so the temperature is the same. I don't know what improvement you might see baking for 7 hours instead of 3. Someone else suggested the archives on rec.audio.pro for info on baking tapes. I suggest that if you bake cassettes that you should then transplant the tape into a new shell before playing. Good Luck Mark
From: br930@torfree.net Subject: MDR-D77 Headphones Date: Thu, 12 Mar 1998 10:54:35 -0500 Folks, A store here in Toronto is selling the discontinued MDR-D77 for a ridiculously low price, equivalent to $47 U.S. with tax. These headphones will fit the WMD-DT1 remote's microplug, and have gotten some favourable press for their performance. Here's Sony's webpage with specs: http://www.sel.sony.com/SEL/consumer/ss5/accessories/digitalheadphones/mdr-d 77.html If anyone would like a pair of these, I'd be happy to help you get them. The store had about 5 units (of which I'm buying one pair myself), and indicated that this was a sale price, so if interested, please let me know ASAP. Cheers, Dave

Any suggestions ? If you want a miniature microphone set, our High End Binaurals, with the 4060 rather than the 4061 are about as quiet as you can get. They're also very rugged. If size isn't a concern and you want the lowest noise possible, consider the Sennheiser MK-80. As I recall its noise performance is the best that's available. From: d ginsburg <swilcox@emory.edu> Subject: Blank tape after show? Date: Thu, 12 Mar 1998 13:34:52 -0500 (EST) Please help me! i taped a show (or tried to) on my sony D-8. i patched out of a DA-P1 via coax -> 7pin. during the show, set one appeared to be burning fine. the levels were running. the DA-P1 sounded good between sets, but i did not try to listen to mine. when i got home, my tape of set one was blank. set two came out fine. the only thing out of the oridnary that happened was that, when i pulled the tape out of the deck, it got stuck, causing a little bit of the *tape* itself to pull out of the shell. i fixed it quickly. Does anyone know why this could happen. and better yet, can anyone tell me how to get the data off the tape so that i canlisten to it? any help greatly appreciated david

Mine did fine until last night I got an error warning starting at 1h50m. It's cycling up to about 30 00 30 00 with very audible results. After cleaning the heads and turning the machine off for 6hrs I tried a different tape this morning and I had the same problem. I am listening to a 60m tape now and it is playing fine. Anybody got any suggestions or solutions. I don't have immediate access to another deck. Jai

They stopped making it because of low demand (it cost $40) and high reliability problems. I'm sure that the recording lasers on most CD-Rs weren't designed for such a small track width. (Even if some or most can handle them, probably most or all of the CD-R mechanism manufacturers didn't have such fragile discs in mind.) I'd imagine that no one in their right minds would put data on them, and so recording music on them is also suspect. FWIW, I've heard that commercial pressings of 80-minute discs are also problem-prone. My advice: wait for audio DVD-R or DVD-RW. :) Peace, <> David URL me at http://www.lightlink.com/drogers/ -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- "You can kill a thousand; you can bring an end to life; you cannot kill an idea." --Former Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres on the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin (1922-1995) ================= Do you believe in telekinesis? It seems that most people are very satisfied with their R300s and that only a couple (so far) have panned the unit. Bearing in mind that I don't know of any porduct that gets a 100% thumbs up, this speaks highly of the R300. However, before I take the plunge, I have come across a used Sony DTC-750. Does anyone have experience with this unit? Good idea or bad? Thanks again for the replys. Most appreciated. From: daniel.estrin@chadbourne.com Subject: Neumann U87/U89 Questions Date: Thu, 12 Mar 98 16:30:10 -0500 Hey now....Steve Kingsley asked: >>>>I have a few tapes made with these mic's, they sound sweet, but I understand there are a few settings you can use, omni, card, hypercard, fig 8, ect...<<< U87 = Omni, Card, Figure 8 (I think) U89 = Omni, subcard (wide angle card), card, hypercard, figure 8 (I know ;) >>>My question is, to those of you who run them,... What settings do you prefer?... What would YOU use in a taper section, as opposed to fob, ect.<<< >From the tapers section I use hypercards with the U89s. In clubs and theaters I've been running them cardioid. I may experiment with the subcard at the ABB tomorrow (Friday) night. I'm personally and generally not a fan of omnis indoors, but I'd certainly run them split omni up front at an outdoor show given the right set of circumstances. Anyone who is familiar with these mics knows that they are not that easy to be stealthy with. >>>Is there anything that would be a dead giveaway as to what setting was used? Is there any time you would actually use fig. 8? I'm just trying to narrow it down as to what settings may have been used on these tapes out of curiosity. If I had to guess, Omni on a tall stand, Hyper for all else? I'd be grateful if someone would shed some light my way.<<<< Well, the only way to tell fer sure imo would be to ask the taper. Especially if all of the other equipment used is a variable. Are these recent shows? Older shows? On the Fall/Holiday 97 phish tour, all of the U87 tapes that I'm aware of were recorded from the TS with the cardioid setting (can Gary F. and Bill G., confirm?). All of the U89 recordings were recorded from the TS with the hypercard setting (into a sonosax->sbm->P1). As for the figure 8 setting, I guess this would be useful for running a Mid-Side matrix. Can the light be turned ON/OFF with the HOLD button ON? 2. Is the recording level active (adjustable) with HOLD on? like the D7/8. 3. Does the D100/M1 have an ON/OFF switch, or does it power down like the D7/8? 4. Do they have gold plated I/O's? not that it really matters much. 5. Is the 7pin digital I/O plug the same as the D7/8? Can i use the same cable for each deck? 6. How far does the door open? Can you give me approximate dimensions when the deck is open. Are the D100/M1 the same size? I want to know if i can open it and change tapes without it leaving my pouch. I can bearly do it with my D7, but much too risky for a misload to do it under live conditions. Thanks for your time. DJ
