Hey All,
Sorry for the lack of Phish content DPC, but was wondering if anyone had
a copy, or knows someone who has one (especially those in SF area), of
the following show. If you do, let me know and we can set up a trade. I
have tons to trade; no joke. I must have this show!

"ok, here's the dealio...i'm ready to buy an inexpensive set of HQ
mics(does
that make any sense?)"
What is High Quality? If you can make a really nice tape with Radio
Shacks, does that make them high quality?
" I've looked at some Octava Mk012's and some AKG
C1000's. Octavas feature a -10db pad, no bass rolloff, and a cardiod
capsule."
Oktavas come with supercard, card, and omni caps. All 3 capsules have
yielded excellent results for me. I've recently been using the supercards
in small clubs to cut back on mushiness and crowd noise(before was using
cards). The Oktavas tend to be bass heavy, but nothing too serious. Try
to find 2, 100 megaohm resistors to do my bass rolloff which is in the
archives. I think the Oktavas are an excellent mic. For the money and
their flexibility, they can't be beat IMHO. I'm not sure where to get them
anymore though.
"The AKG C1000's offer cardiod OR hyper capsules, no padding or bass
rolloff.
Both show great #'s on paper, but do any of YOU have any experience with
these
mics??? Pros/Cons??? Are there other mics that anyone can recommend within
the same ballpark figure? (approx. $400-$600/ pair) The Octavas also run
about a $100 more. I will be using these mics to go straight into my
Dap1(no
external preamp, until i step upto the shoepps)"
An external mic preamp will improve any mic's performance, not just
Schoeps.
"I've used the C1000's before, and was somewhat pleased with the
recordings.
Any and all feedback would be GRATELY appreciated either personally or to
the
list for all to read!"
Placement is more important than brand name.

anything from "the section")

However, with a given amount of money to spend, it's better to upgrade
the mics than to buy an external preamp until the amount gets
sufficiently large.

Hey y'all-
I've gotten a few more blank tapes and a couple more days of DAT player
usage from a friend, so I'd like
to spread this around a little bit more. Specifically, I realized that
by accepting trades from primarily the first people who emailed me I
left out those who, like myself, get only the digest days later. We
deserve kind trades too! So, I'd like to set up the first few traders
or unideckers who email me *after* the digest comes out, even if I had
to say "no" before (and lord knows I probably will have to again:>).

I was at this show and was thoroughly blown away by it so naturally I
just got to get a dat of it. I don't have much of a dat collection
(about 10 Dead shows and an '80 JGB show, with like 6 of the Dead shows
from dat trees) but if you have a nice copy of this show, it sure would
put a real big smile on my face to get it a copy and of course I would
offer it up to five digital folks and probably an equal number of analog
folks on rec.music.gdead (plus copies to all my friends). Thought it was
a magical show and would love to relive it. Thanks!

I'm considering getting a R300 and I want to know if it will duplicate bit
for bit when making a digital to digital copy.
The HHB CD recorder does NOT duplicate bit for bit when making
digital/digital copies.
I'm curious if the R300 does or does not.
Does anyone know the answer?
Also, do all DAT recorders make digital bit for bit copies?
or are some like the HHB cd recorder and not do bit for bit.
Thanks, Mark

In the "Behind the Scenes" column in Dec 1997 Nat'l Geographic is an item
re:pictured sound engineer Michael Schweppe, who uses "digital stereo
technology" to gather beach sounds to add realism to Radio Expeditions, a
public radio series. From the beachfront picture, in which two mics are
ziptied to vertical rods extending up from his backpack, I suspect that this
may be the intrepid archivist with the recording obtained by strapping a
waterproofed D7 to the dolphin. Or maybe not.
At page 187 of the April 1998 Guitar World magazine is an extended discussion
of the pros and cons of digital vs analog vs hard disc recording, including
the perspectives of David Torn, Jimmy Page, and others. This may interest
those of you involved in preserving your own compositions.

The TDK Pen is really nice! I got mine at the DAT Store (they do NOT
sell them individually!) and they are great for writing on
everything: CDRs, DAT J-cards, and also for writing directly on the
spine of DAT tapes (which I like to do).
It's basically a dark black, fine tipped marker with a quick-drying,
"CDR-Safe" ink.

No problem. My answers will be based on the TCD-D100. I don't
think it will be any different with the PCM-M1.
>1. Can the light be turned ON/OFF with the HOLD button ON?
No, in fact engaging HOLD will turn the backlight off.

Yes. It is the same.
>3. Does the D100/M1 have an ON/OFF switch, or does it

The D100 powers down automatically. The HOLD switch will put it
into a low-power "sleep mode".
>4. Do they have gold plated I/O's? not that it really matters much.
The D100 (and PCM-M1?) have gold-plated analogue I/O.
>5. Is the 7pin digital I/O plug the same as the D7/8?
> Can i use the same cable for each deck?
The D100 has the same 7-pin digital connector, but the voltage
level is lower than the D-7/8. You will have to get new cables,
at least for digital output, or the signal will not be strong enough.
The new Sony "low power" cables will work with both the old and new
portable DATs, I think.

The D100 is thinner than the D7/8 and has a shorter door. It opens
at a narrower angle, so it should take less space to open. The only
difficulty changing tapes in a pouch is the location of the door.
On the D7/8, with the record knob and I/O ports on the right hand
side, the tape door opens toward you. On the D100 when the record
knob is on your right hand side, the tape door faces away from you.
It's a bit frustrating, but workable. On the D100, when you open
the tape door, it just barely opens. Then you have to lift it up
by hand. It's a little more difficult to change tapes on the D100
than on the D7/8, IMHO.
Hope that helps. Good luck taping.

Hmmm... I don't know what the laws are on paying VAT, but it may be worth
looking into for non-Brits to see if it is cheaper to get these tapes and
have them shipped from the UK. I recall when I lived there that VAT was
refundable to "tourists." Of course this all depends on the current
exchange rate. I was there last spring and it was about $1.65 per pound
sterling. Ouch.

Hi, I just got my DAT machine so here's a few newbie questions.
I went to tape a trio last night (piano bass drums) at a jazz club and
I set the levels at ACG hoping the machine would do the wrok. This was
my first time recording with this machine. Well, when the drummer got a
bit into it the recording distorted a bit, the rest came out great.
Besides sitting a bit farther back (at the expense of recording the rest
of the band just as well as last night?) anyone have any tips on
recording jazz in a room of about 300 people? I'm using a D100 and a
pair of Core Sounds stealth mics. The machine seems to record well at 1
or 2 on the dial. Should I just try and avoid the drummer a bit, so to
speak? Anyhow, thanks ahead of time to all who respond. ATB Bill

This 'one' you need will last around 96 times. When you first put in the

I have not reached this number yet, but this was info I got from my manual.
I assume it runs out of space for the test spot.

DatMan2188 <DatMan2188@aol.com> had a few questions...
1. Can the light be turned ON/OFF with the HOLD button ON?
- The light can not be turned off when in HOLD mode. (You will get the
flashing "hold" text on the screen.)
2. Is the recording level active (adjustable) with HOLD on? like the D7/8.
- It is adjustable when in MANUAL record mode. (it is not when in AGC mode.)
3. Does the D100/M1 have an ON/OFF switch, or does it power down like the
D7/8?
- It does not have an on/off switch. (I dont have a D7 or D8; not sure if
the power down sequence is the same)
4. Do they have gold plated I/O's? not that it really matters much.
- I dont think it does.
5. Is the 7pin digital I/O plug the same as the D7/8? Can i use the same cable
for each deck?
- I believe the 7pin digital I/O plug is the same, but you can not use the
same cables. (unless you are using Len's cables - I believe they work).
Oade Bros. have a nice passive cable that works with the D100/M1, and Sony
has a new set of digital cables for these two models.
6. How far does the door open? Can you give me approximate dimensions when the
deck is open. Are the D100/M1 the same size?
- I believe they are the same size, and the deck opens up about 2 inches or
so. I have switched tapes while the unit was in my fanny pack.
