The Source is from Eric V's setup (B&K 4021>Apogee AD-1000), and is on a 90m unlabeled Maxell. From: "Ken, the DooDah Man" <ken@webjams.com> Subject: DooDah Trees Open Tree Annoucement Date: Sun, 15 Mar 1998 16:33:08 -0600 Hey now. DooDah Trees "Tree Farm Forest" (dedicated to top-notch, up and coming taper-friendly bands) has just opened a new tree featuring The Big Wu. These guys do a superfine job on Dead songs, and have a killer selection of their own of the same flavor. The show was 11.19.97 at the Cabooze in Minneapolis, MN. The tape is a dSBD/Sennheiser matrix that is super fine. Leif Rasmussen of The Jones Gang sits in on percussion, which adds a nice dimension to this show. Signups for permanent and temporary, DAT and analog, branch and leaf members will be gladly accepted. Come and join the largest tape tree ever...with over 1,200 members. DooDah Trees is admin'd by DooDah Code, a custom program that guarantees that every member gets the show (how novel)!! From: Greg Hanssen <hanssen@netcom.com> Subject: stand alone CDR Date: Sun, 15 Mar 1998 14:26:30 -0800 (PST) Some stand alone CDR units with 'resampling' also perform a 44.1kHz -> 44.1kHz resampling.. this would cause the data to change from DAT->CDR dupes at 44.1. I've heard that some stand alone units have a 44.1kHz pass-through mode, to overide the built in SRC, but many do not. -- Greg <Hanssen@netcom.com> (714)-551-5833 Zefiro Acoustics Zefiro Acoustics: The DAT to PC solution P.O. From: Daniel Dobert <Daniel@full-moon.com> Subject: selfmade EQ - circuit diagrams - crossover instructions ?? Date: Mon, 16 Mar 1998 00:07:28 +0100 Hello everybody out there... I was looking for some circuit diagrams (and instructions) on how to build my own 10-band EQ on the Internet but didn't really find what I was looking for. Has anybody of you some suggestions or URLs where to look? Then I was also without luck looking for some detailed instructions on how to build a crossover (for stage-equipment, 200W, 16 Ohms ...) - any ideas where to find such things (or even sites with many electronic do-it-yourself stuff)? Thanks for any help - I will gladly post some details if needed, Daniel.

(sorry, no secrets reveled) Date: Sun, 15 Mar 1998 20:14:13 EST In a message dated 98-03-15 14:13:08 EST, you write: << From: Paul Cho <pc132@columbia.edu> Subject: How To Stealth? Date: Sat, 14 Mar 1998 17:28:20 -0500 (EST) Hello all, A couple of months ago, somebody asked if people would explain to him what is the best method to stealth shows. I guess because of the secretive nature of stealthing, nobody posted their answer to the list. Well, I just recently got a pair of CSB's and I was hoping there would be a few of you that would enlighten me on good stealth techniques. *******Well i suppose i could put out a few general procedures. Get up close to the stage. Make sure all is working before the band hits the stage. Taping with Binaural mics you need to keep from looking around, within reason of course. it does make a difference with large movement. look like your having fun, don't stand like a statue trying not to disturb the L>R, R>L movement. Practice and experience, you can read about it till your blue in the face, but all your real knowledge will come from doing it over and over again, making sure to learn from your mistakes. It' ll be the most fun you've ever had. A coupla questions? --Where do you place the mics? I'm figuiring in a hat, but what about the wires that stick out and go out of the hat? Any remedies? *******Well since you have the CSB mics which have a mini-gator clip, the first place is a hat, but you can experiment with placment with the gator clip. When i use CSB's i simply clip em to my hat. As for the wires........A collar'd shirt, a hat, run them down your neck under your shirt. If ya still feel paranoid you can get one of those *ponytail* hats. --How about setting levels? The infamous blue beacon must be dealth with. (Sony D8) ********I set my levels around 6db>4db max peaks with my D7. Auto window tint on a clear plastic sheet, or, Alex Sloley posted recently that he had small sheets that adhere with static. --Exactly when and where do you set up? Bathroom? *******When: inside, Where: Bathroom. Some walk in set up. That's it, thanks in advance! Paul >> *******No prob. --D
From: SANDMAN794 <SANDMAN794@aol.com> Subject: Newbie.....questions Date: Sun, 15 Mar 1998 21:10:07 EST DAT-Heads, I am looking into purchasing some live taping equipment. I want to start contributing some live "Westcoast" shows! My main concern is $$$$. It may take a while to afford a great DAT setup. Is analog an setup ok to start out with? I've heard Sony's WM-D6C is a good analog recorder. I understand this is a DAT mailing list but, I was hoping analog taping is discussed at times. Can I get quality recordings from the D6C? If so, what type of mics are recommended for this rig? If the info is right, I can get a D6C for about half the cost of a D100. Any suggestions? Thanks.
From: zac bolan <zbolan@zbolan.com> Subject: Matrix Mic Position Date: Sun, 15 Mar 1998 20:53:46 -0600 Hi Y'all, made my first matrix recording last night in a small hall (200 seats). I ran a SBD feed (stereo) and my Beyer CK713(c) mics into a Mackie 1404 mixer, down to 2 channels, then out to my DA-P1. The hall has very nice acoustics and my mics were about 50-60 feet back from the stage. The players are traditional Irish music performers (happy St. Patrick's Day!) - Beginish. Their instruments are all fairly high pitched. The music sounds fine but when the players speak between songs, there's a discernable echo. Obviously this is due time delay in the sound hitting the mics, mixing with the immediate signal from the board. What do other matrix tapers do the avoid this echo? Surely they all can't get mics up on (or close to) the stage. Is there some way to delay the board signal a bit without investing a million bux? thanx zac
From: pkmin@rsc.rockwell.com Subject: Spoon Feeding Time (SFT)....... Date: Sun, 15 Mar 1998 20:18:20 -0800 Scott, WRT this list, what I am all about is dat taping and trading(and technical stuff too, helping others, dogging people who deserve to be dogged, an open environment where anyone out there who has a dat-related question no matter how simple or complex (I was the one who always asked the "stupid" questions in class BTW) can ask. I hate people who are condescending, have a bad attitude and just think they are the shit (for all practical purposes, taping is Candyland and some people just get this attitude I can't deal with). Anything that is pro "dat taping and trading" I am for. Anything that endangers our hobby, I am against. Why? Because I'm a taper. I love to tape. It brings me happiness, etc, etc, etc. For our hobby to prosper in the future, I feel that my way of viewing the whole "scene" is ESSENTIAL!!! (I realize/hope that most of you probably see this anyways). Remember when I said "everything is interelated and affects everything else". Guess what? I meant it (surprise). When I see crap like the following.... "heard this place was a real hell hole anyway...probably not missing much acoustic wise...thought i'd save any of you a trip to the show if your main reason for going was taping..." I *will*go*off*on*whoever*wrote*it*. I'm not attacking you personally, but just pointing out that what was written, is SOME SERIOUS NEGATIVE SHIT(as opposed to the good stuff :-). SHIT that is clearly bad for our hobby (in case you've forgotten "everything is interelated and affects everything else"). I will do everything in my power (constuctive posting, emphasizing (YES Eric, that may mean REPOSTING other's warm fuzzy posts -- sorry to make you scroll for a split second longer), dog people, etc to keep the dat scene "cool". A lot of knowledgeable people have left this list. Do you think there were reasons why? I'd love to attract some of them back and I'm just trying to clean up this list(trust me I HATE PLAYING COP!!!!), and keep our hobby healthy and alive and kicking like it deserves to be. Your last post didn't help the cause. Therefore I went off. Pete (sorry for having to point this out, I realize most of you got the point the first time around).
From: pkmin@rsc.rockwell.com Subject: "The problem nowadays is that Internet has changed everything." Date: Sun, 15 Mar 1998 20:31:37 -0800 So that's what Keith Roberts of the Young Dubliners has to say. Like myself, many of you have realized this for a while now. This is just one of the reasons why a positive mentality on this list is important to the future of DATing...... Pete (did I tell you that everything is interelated and affects everything else?)

From: JProcopi <JProcopi@aol.com> Subject: Extra PJ's / Site address / Run a tree or vine? Date: Mon, 16 Mar 1998 00:56:24 EST Hola, I have two extra copies of Pearl Jam 10/02/96 Hartford, CT. The source is SBD. They are each on 90 meters and have a neat filler on them. Ideally, you would have the PHiSH 11/29/97 "Runaway Jim show" on the Neumann U87's (T.S.). Is that a bad thing? :) However, in the event that this isn't possible I am willing to let the tapes go for the less glamorous B+P. Lastly, for those who have traded with me, please update your bookmarks for my site from "FTP" to: http://members.aol.com/jprocopi Even if we haven't met, you are more than welcome to stop by. And finally, I'm opening up my list for anyone who'd like to do a little vining or treeing. B+P, you must turn the tapes around though (in either the DAT or analog domain). See ya' folks! John
From: pkmin@rsc.rockwell.com Subject: Taping summary of last weekend. Date: Sun, 15 Mar 1998 21:58:36 -0800 Erik, Please pass this on to the band. First let me thank you for giving me the privilege/opportunity to tape you guys. I really appreciate it & I love your music!!! Anyways let's cut to the chase. 3-13. (Friday the 13th--got two parking tickets for the same thing --one at like 11 PM the 13th and the other for like 12:06 AM the 14th (an hour later!)--can you believe that shit -- and they're not cheap). Anyways sorry about that sidenote, its just that lately I've been fed up with a lot of stuff. Anyways -- I go to a lot of concerts. I (like to think) I know a smokin show when I see one. You guys were *ON*FIRE* Friday! The tape. To make a long story short, I'm an anal as heck taper(most dat tapers are). If its not perfect and the reason its not perfect is my fault I get bummed (but taping is a learning experience and I learn from past mistakes). While the tape is listenable and sounds good, the low end is somewhat muddied and sometimes distorted (really not major but nevertheless still there). I should have had the mics going line in instead of mic in. I also should have pushed the levels significantly more (I usually slam levels but for whatever reason I was being Mr. Conservative that night--ended up setting my record level knob to a mere 2.3 out of 10 which (I now learned) is not good in this situation, I think it caused a slight overload of the mic preamp which caused the minor distortion)Basically that tape, had I gone line-in had the potential to be scary. The sound was incredible where I had my rig set up and you guys could do no wrong. I'm bummed. Had I gone line in I think the sound would have been absolutely frightening. (There's a reason why I chose to go mic in before the show even started but that's another story, it has to do with differences which have recently developed in my mics). I may look into whether its possible to "improve" the sound by post processing and if so I'll let you know and send the newer version. 3-14-98. Another great show! I ran the same rig like I did Fri (this time taking Fri's experiences into account and now going line in -- I compensated for mic differences by placing the lesser sensitive of the two by a loud speaker). Tape turned out nice but a tad low on sax and vocals. The mix I did (first time) turned out really nice. Send me an address and I will send the tape. I think you and the band will like really like it! Also I saw that you will be touring with Ben Harper shortly . At Sat's show I gave Karl a copy of your Fri show as well as a Ben Harper tape I made. I hope you and the band like the Ben tape(I think everyone will). If possible, share it with Ben. I was gonna personnally give him a copy the last time I saw him but I never really got a chance--he was busy being bombarded with stupid questions by the media (I sat at the table just below where they were asking the stupid questions). Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals are my favorite current group. He has a *MESSAGE* like no other. Crank it LOUD!!! I hope you like it. Take care and thanks again. Peter Min
