A cop came up behind me inbetween songs and asked what it was, I made some weird hand sign motions to him and mumbled in a funny voice "thier tone generators.I am partially deaf" ....he said " oh oh ok yea I thought it was something" and then walked away! From: Rando0 <Rando0@aol.com> Subject: Re: DAT-Heads Digest #128 Date: Wed, 18 Mar 1998 06:24:15 EST In a message dated 98-03-18 04:01:06 EST, you write: << Question: Is there some kind of DAP1 battery I can buy/construct that will use disposble batteries? I don't really know how this thing works, or if something like this is possible. Can you purchase the little 3-pin adaptor that the Eco-Change plugs into? I do know that disposables will get very expensive, but if I'm gonna do the tour, I may as well tape...and the Eco-Charge won't cut it with out an AC source every day to recharge... So who would I need to contact, or what would I need to buy, if this is indeed possible? Thanks Jason >> Hey jason I run a dap1 as well, here's the quick and easy $40 dollar solution!!! Goto a local electronics store and buy an INVERTER. This device plugs into your cigarettelighter and turns 12V into 120V!! Bring your wall wart for the echo charge, and VOILA!! you're charging yer battery as you drive to the next show : ) If you are going to be doing festivals, i would suggest having several batteries with you on-hand inside the show :) Here is a quick rundown on my set up....(1) 12V 6.5AHr rechargeable battery pack , Dap1, the power supply xformer(yes, the one that plugs into the wall), and the INVERTER! I plug the INVERTER into the battery pack(one has a male cigarette lighter receptacle, the other a female), then plug my xformer into the INVERTER, and VOILA!!, I'm portable YET, running off of 120V!! I get 8 RELIABLE hrs. of power for my Dap1 with Phantom ON and the WHOLE set up cost me a mere $113!!!! Less than HALF the price of the echo charge!! Only drawback is if size is a limitation, my battery pack is twice as thick as the echo charge. Now, the next BEST thing to this set up..... after the show is done and i'm heading down the road IN MY CAR, to the next gig, i plug the INVERTER into my cigarette lighter and then plug the wall wart for RECHARGING my BATTERY PACK in, and yup, you guessed it, i have 120V in my car!!! Hope this helps you and all the other DAP1 owners out!! BTW you Sony owners can do the same thing by using a 6V rechargeable battery. You'll only need the INVERTER to recharge yer battery down the road. Otherwise you can keep investing in D batteries.... happy trails, Randy

I rememeber that the SGI digi in accepts S/P-DIF levels - so you would just need an "7-pin -> S/P-DIF out" adapter to get into your SGI. Unfortunately, Sony doesn't have such a cable, but there are some people out there on this reflector selling such things (check DAT heads web page). I flat out refused to drive him home if he did, and promised him that it was possible to get all of those discs (most with better quality) from our little community. So, if anyone has the boot CD "Pearl Jam Down Under", or a copy of the show itself (3/17/95 Flinders Park, Melbourne Australia, featuring Nirvana's Dave Grohl on Drums) and would be willing to do a quick B&P or trade for CD-R's from my list (I'm a uni-decker), please contact me as soon as possible. This was a soundboard recording, and is labeled "broadcast recording", so it might be a FM>DAT recording. Thanks in advance for any of your help, Glenn Sullivan GSullivan@DavidClark.com

From: carlos martinez <carlmart@centroin.com.br> Subject: Dual microphone adaptor Date: Wed, 18 Mar 1998 11:03:01 -0300 (EST) Well, I got no answers for this query. It's strange that nobody seemed interested or curious on this matter. It was a good chance to get a balanced preamp for a reasonable price. Let me tell you what else I could find out. 1) There are at least three models on the market, going from $175 to $250. 2) They are all passive preamps, that is they have a transformer that converts balanced to unbalanced. 3) They all have volume pots and switches for mic/line input levels 4) They do not provide phantom-power (their biggest fault for me) 5) They do not provide low-cut (easy to provide though, using the mic/line switch or adding another switch) The worst fault,as I said, is the lack of phantom power and the limited space to put two 9-v batteries inside. As I haven't handled them I don't know if one or two batteries would fit inside. A DC-DC circuit might be easy to fit, though, as phantom current is very little. Any suggestions? A cheap way to go balanced on a D8/D100/M1 folks! Carlos E. Martinez

However, S/PDIF can be carried over an optical or coax interface. >Anyone have any recommendations? - There may be others, but the only CD palyer I have seen with coax S/PDIF is the Harmon/Kardon FLD 8300 5-disc changer. However, the manufacturer has stated in a service bulletin that it needed a factory mod to bring the digital output voltage levels up to specifications. - You could buy a CD player with optical out, then get a box that converts optical to coax. Fostex, Core Sound, and probably others sell these for $75-$100. - A "pro" CD player will likely have AES/EBU out, but it will be fairly expensive. Also keep in mind, AES/EBU does not transfer CD track-marks or Start-IDs. They're just not part of the digital AES/EBU bit-stream. Lotsa luck. From: "John Blackmore" <blackmor@iconn.net> Subject: Newbie taper advice needed Reply-To: <blackmor@iconn.net> Date: Wed, 18 Mar 1998 10:48:03 -0500 I'm planning on taping two of the upcoming Phish shows, and it'll be my first taping experience, so I don't want to @!#!@ it up! I have a D7, and I'd like to perform some kind of test or "dry run" to make sure it'll perform well at the show. Any thoughts on this? I have a D-cell battery pack, so I want to test that it will last long enough. I will be getting a patch, so I also want to verify that it will accurately clone a digital source (if that's the right terminology). Trouble is, it's my only deck. Would taping an analog source be a reasonable test? Next, I'll be looking for a second deck very soon, and would like to gather some input. Yes, I dug through the archives, but there's very little out there with folks that bought a portable first, esp. a D7. I think I need an SCMS-free deck, so even a '11' source will become a '00' clone. I'm especially interested in what people have to say about the following: Tascam DA-20 mkII Panasonic SV-xxxx Tascam DA-30 mkII Sony R-500 or any other home decks that might be recommended. I'd be willing to spend up to about $1500, including all cabling and such. I'd also like to know a lot more about digital cabling, I've seen coax, 7-pin, S/PDIF (sp?), and optical, and don't really understand the compatibilty/tradeoffs and what not between them. If there's a web source on this stuff, I'd love to know about it. Thanks for the space. -John Blackmore blackmor@iconn.net

From: Anders Johansson <ajo@algonet.se> Subject: D100 - manual cleaning Reply-To: ajo@algonet.se Date: Wed, 18 Mar 1998 17:05:15 +0100 Well - one day I only had to do it - due to high error rates on the D100 I had to try to clean the head manually. If you read the service manual you have to disassembly the hole thing to get close to the head - not a good idea - so this is what I did: - First the usual disclaimer - if you don't know how to clean dat heads - don't start with the D100 or D7/8 - get some practice on your video recorder first! - I used the same way to open the D100 as I use when opening the D7: take away the two screws on the right side of the door - don't loose the screws in the carpet! - Unhook the door from the cassette holder mechanism - move the door gently "down" - eventually the door gets loose from the cassette holder. - Place the door wide open to the deck - but be very careful - DON'T BEND the flat cables too much! This is _very_ important! (Also important when you open the D7/8). If you bend the cables they might break. - Now you can see the head behind the plate (item 63 in the manual) - unfortunately this plate almost covers the head - not so on the D7. It is hard to touch the head. I used a small sick with Tascams dat-head-cleaning fabric ("Savina") moistened with iso propyl alcohol. You can move the head trough the holes on the plate - very gently of course. Rotate the head the usual way. If you are not familiar with this - don't do it! - Put the door back on the mechanism with the two screws. - The D100 is more difficult to clean than the D7/8 - the head is more covered. May be some one on the list knows a better way!! - Anyway - my D100 has no errors anymore! Anders
