When the Dead played amphitheatres such Riverport or Deer Creek they set up their own speakers on the outside of the pavillion, spaced out, facing the lawn. So, though on the lawn you were not as nearly as far from the speakers as you would be in an arena taping section. Additionally there are no walls to reflect the sound back towards you as indoors. I actually preferred sitting on the front of the lawn when seeing the Dead at amphs. Peace, Bash
From: RKB4%ERF%EbrFacErf@bangate.pge.com Subject: Slap Slap Delay Delay Reply-To: <RKB4%ERF%EbrFacErf@bangate.pge.com> Date: Wed, 18 Mar 98 9:17:53 PST You need to get a delay unit I would think....I am not familiar with all the options in products but the Behringer Ultra Curve DSP-8000 has an extra cost option delay which allows you to adjust the sound reaching a listener from speakers at two different distances. The question though (I don't have this option on my UC) is what happens if the listener is not at the sweet spot or somewhere in between the two speaker locations. Guess the best deal is to have the speakers relatively close to each other and use powerfull enough speakers that you don't need additional ones remotely located (other than surround sound). The Ultra Curve is a great unit when equiped with the digital in/out option and I use it constantly for equalization, notch filtering, limiting and noise gate ability....but I have no experience with the optional delay feature though. Mmm you don't say what sort of problems you are having. But a friend was getting a lot of Buffer Underruns using some Shareware Mastering Software and I think his problem was that his disc was a bit too Fragmentated. When I am writing projects I have partitions on my disc set a side so I never get this trouble. If the noise is because of the Analogue tape and your soundcard then Download Cool Edit 96 (A Yahoo search will find it). The demo allows you two functions at once and they can be Noise reduction and Save. To Eliminate Noise just sample a bit of the sound that only has noise on it. You will be very impressed with the results! >P.S. if this is not the right forum for this question please let me know, >and tell me what is the right forumn. Yep I use CD-R Labels from PressIt and Neato both UK based I believe but they are designed specifically for use with CD-R so they should not eat the disc. They are also use Heat Resistant Glue. I have only been CD-Ring a few months but apart from the fact they are expensive 20 Pence each they have been perfect. From: matteo <stroppa@dada.it> Subject: sony d8 VS. d100 Reply-To: stroppa@dada.it Date: Wed, 18 Mar 1998 19:41:39 +0100 hi! i'm a dat dj and i always used sony d8 that i found a great machine... (except the fact that is too much fragile..) now i'm looking for a new one and it seems that the d8 is going out of production... so i "must" take a d100, but i have the feeling that: 1) this small machine is more fragile then the d8! 2)a friend told me that it is slower too and this is important for me because when i dj i have to rewind and fastforward the tapes very quickly! 3) the good thing is that inside the d100 there is id writer and renumber, is it this true? i wonder if there are on the market any other portable machine as good (and as expensive) as the d8... i need excellent sound quality, gold plated "holes" for the jack, portability, hardiness, speedness in rew ffw, assistence (for repairing..) thanks for any help matteo (italy)

From: jhauer@csus.com (John Hauer) Subject: ear protection Date: Wed, 18 Mar 1998 11:47:47 -0800 Hey, I haven't read all the posts on this one, so excuse me if I repeat someone else. Hearing loss is a BIG deal. It happens naturally with age. It can be sped up greatly with exposure to loud distorted noise. For the guy in the dead cover band -- First thing, Move the speaker or yourself! Second, go to the doctor and have your hearing checked. Tell the doctor your problem and ask for prescription ear protection at a variety of filtration. It seems to me that playing tunes in a bar is not worth trading for your health. Color me simple. Short of that, there are tons of ear protection products out there. Try them all, maybe you'll find something that works. But, if at the end of the night, you still have some ringing, you are destroying your health. On the plus side, you won't need to bother with quality audio gear after that. No need for Dat.... = ) John
From: Yalk <Yalk@aol.com> Subject: Dyes and Such Date: Wed, 18 Mar 1998 14:54:46 EST From: CDWD82A@prodigy.com (MR JEFF S MORROW) Subject: Right Hand Corrupts CDR Date: Tue, 17 Mar 1998 20:18:48, -0500 Rudely shouted: <<CAN ANYONE GIVE CONCRETE EVIDENCE OF ANY CDR BEING DESTROYED BY ANY MARKER? Enough said!>> No, it is not enough, as I don't think the whole CDR process is understood. The way a CDR works, the very thin dye layer is burned away by the laser to create the pits and lands for data. That dye layer is covered by the very thin reflective layer, then a very thin resin protective layer covers that. As much as we would like to think that plastic is impervious, it is sadly not. The acids in standard permanent markers will leach into and through the protective layer and attack the dye, thus increasing the error rate and causing skips and loss of data over time. The same thing will happen with dyes used in most inkjet CDR printers, however most of that media seems to have an extra contrast coating for printable media that may retard the leaching. As far back as '96 Apogee has said "in addition, we do not recommend the use of solvent-based markers as commonly used onto write on the disc; the solvents can also leach through into the dye". I'd love to find a taper's section first set made with the (most expenive of course) bomb setup (Schoeps(preferably riding high (most people run their mics too high IMHO)on the Schoeps stereo bar of course)>Lunatec>AD1000>HHB via Audio Magic cables)and make a complete show, tree it out and let people decide for themselves...... From: eugene@borchard.ladev.tandem.com (Eugene Hu) Subject: Re: Right Hand Corrupts CDR Date: Wed, 18 Mar 1998 12:28:44 -0800 I've seen a CDR destroyed by a pen using xylene based ink. Someone at work was labeling a CDR with such a pen just before sending it out and it ate through the coating on the backside within seconds, making the CDR completely unreadable. I've never heard of a problem with acid in the ink until recently on DAT-heads, but then widespread use of CDRs is fairly new and perhaps this problem hasn't come up yet with anyone I know. You can always try out a new pen on a coaster (don't tell me you don't have *any* coasters :-) and see if it dissolves the coating. I'd expect a water-based ink to be safe, and most, if not all, non-polar solvent based inks to be unsafe. FWIW, I use one of the TDK pens, but then it was given to me when I bought my CDR620 at the DAT Store. -Eugene
From: "Sharples, Graham" <sdgxs08@brighton1t.agw.bt.co.uk> Subject: VHS Hi-Fi Date: Wed, 18 Mar 1998 17:28:00 -0000 in digest #113 Graham Newton wrote >There's nothing wrong with the "technology of the day" sound-wise, and a >little EQ does wonders... but DON'T go to VHS HiFi... it just is not a >sufficiently stable medium. Am I right in thinking that you mean the linear stereo track on a VHS machine or are you referring to the encoded soundtrack which would normally be interleaved with the picture? I ask because for some time now I have been using my domestic VHS to record FM broadcasts ( because it allows me to record stuff at inconvenient times and allows long uninterrupted recordings off-air. ) I don't know if the system used in the UK (NICAM stereo - produces CD quality stereo sound) is supported in the States. I am concerned that what I had percieved to be a long term storage medium may not be as suitable as I had hoped. I have noticed that using the VHS machine like a fancy cassette recorder does men that you have to be very careful about your choice of tape quality - an average tape produces a sort of a static discharge click fairly frequently while a double coated is free of these effects, but I have not noticed any of my recordings getting worse over time. Apologies if this matter is cover elswhere, but any further advice/info would be gratefully recieved regards Graham

I'll also add that you should first turn on the light and then load the tape and let it stabilize before hitting any of the buttons (rewind, wait, record, pause, wait...) and if the tape misloads the deck will reset and this will be apparent as the light will go out. If the light goes out, I suggest that you unload the tape, turn the light back on and start again with reloading. You can of course turn the light off (especially if there is truth that the light adds noise) after you start recording and before you hit hold. peace, further... e ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
From: "Eric Vandercar" <ericv17@hotmail.com> Subject: "Cleaning" in Sony home decks Date: Wed, 18 Mar 1998 12:47:32 PST Not that this will stop the debate... When these decks are flashing "Cleaning" that is _not_ telling you that it is time for you to clean, but rather it has engaged a small foam roller against the rotating drum/heads and performing a light cleaning of debris that may have accumulated on the surface of the drum. This is usually sufficient to prevent or at least postpone more rigorous wet/hand or professional cleaning of the deck. If you disagree, then why doesn't it flash "Clean" instead of cleaning? If you still don't agree, then why won't the door open while it is flashing? Still a skeptic, put your ear down near the door when it is flashing and ask yourself if you hear something happening inside. And if you're still not convinced, take out the screws that are now holding the cover on; quickly lift the cover next time you see it flashing and report back here what you see. peace, further.... e ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
