Thanks Jason>> Jason, You just answered your own question, a 12v > 120v DC>AC converter is your answer. Your car battery/alternator will do the charging. And these converters can be as small as a D7! they look like car audio amplifiers, same basic heatsink design. and have 1 or 2 (or more) three prong plugs for AC and a lighter plug for your car. Available at most any Auto Parts chain or any large electronics stores. --D >>

I was actually just getting one for myself and a buddy (not as a regular stock item). If a few of you DAT-Heads out there would like to pick these up I will happily order more. Sony products are only a day away from us. The price is about $179? From: Kidpocono <Kidpocono@aol.com> Subject: Need help with some terminology Date: Wed, 18 Mar 1998 18:37:58 EST I've been poring over info, here and on Websites/newsgroups/FAQ, regarding CD- R. With respect to various sound card/computer inputs, and even the HHB CDR deck I've read about, there have been references to different types of outputs/inputs: SPDIF and AESEBU. I'm eventually going to look for a card, or deck, that permits me to make 44.1 clones directly from either the coax or optical digital outs from my Sony DAT deck, but I can't figure out how these would be classified. Thanks for any help. Regards, Paul Soderman

I taped my first in door show (loud) had the mics in and 0db set. I got alot of distortion. I was latter told that the 20db setting is actually -20db. It cuts down the recording level by 20db. I was also told to use Line in instead of mic in. But you are unable to use the -20db setting while using mic in. I have a question though. What is the difference between mic in and line in? >4. Does anyone know when the new Sony RAK-D10(?) 7 pin Digital Cable >will be for sale in the market? I just got mine from Core Sound. I bought the 7pin I/O Y cable. You can dasiychain it with other DATs. It has the 7 pin going to two cables with RCA plugs, one out the other in. I also picked up a couple of RCA and XLR barrels to convert them to whom ever I plug into. The cable is only $65 with the right angle 7pin connection and $50 with the straight 7pin input. Core Sound has many cables to choose from. Here is there website. http://www.panix.com/~moskowit/ >5. I'm saving up for a reasonably priced SCMS free/defeatable Home DAT >deck and am looking for recommendations. Price range is between >$500-800. I've heard that Fostex makes some nice decks. I have the Deck for you: Tascam DA-20mkII : The Tascam DA-20mkII offers SCMS defeatable recording with coaxial input/output, 2-heads, 2-direct drive motors, ABS time function, independent A/D converters, RCA line in/out, and the ability to use 3 hour tape. For $800. I think that this is the best home deck for the money. Two friends of mine both bought this deck and I am thinking about it too. Terrapin Tapes will beat any price. I order all my tapes and just bought my PCM-1 through them. The have more maufacture data and pictures of the Deck. They also sell the Sony's new PCM R-300 which offers COAX & Optical in/out, a 4 digit error display & the ability to use 90 meter tape w/ no problem. This deck will reconize the SMCS code of the connected deck. So if you connect your M1 to it, it becomes SMCS free. But if you connect a D8 it will reconize the code. This deck is only $600. Both the prices include shipping and handling and guess what NO TAX! They have them both at Terrapin Tapes: http://www.ttapes.com/ ask for Jennifer. She always helps me out. However, S/PDIF can be carried over an optical or coax interface. >Anyone have any recommendations? - There may be others, but the only CD palyer I have seen with coax S/PDIF is the Harmon/Kardon FLD 8300 5-disc changer. However, the manufacturer has stated in a service bulletin that it needed a factory mod to bring the digital output voltage levels up to specifications. - You could buy a CD player with optical out, then get a box that converts optical to coax. Fostex, Core Sound, and probably others sell these for $75-$100. - A "pro" CD player will likely have AES/EBU out, but it will be fairly expensive. Also keep in mind, AES/EBU does not transfer CD track-marks or Start-IDs. They're just not part of the digital AES/EBU bit-stream. Lotsa luck. From: pkmin@rsc.rockwell.com Subject: Re:FOB taping Date: Wed, 18 Mar 1998 18:48:18 -0800 My interpretation of the following (don't take this too seriously, while I prefer FOB-front of board, others prefer OTS-official tapers section, to each his own). I realize Mark tapes A LOT LOT LOT and knows a LOT LOT LOT.......so (like always) the following are just my thoughts........And while I'm sure his opinion is justified based on his taping experiences and listening experiences......I just beg to differ in opinion on this one based on my (lopsided)experiences....... "They sound quite different than the FOB's and don't have the up close presence of each instrument but again that big, full, encompassing sound, fully balanced as we heard it at the show is represented (without the upclose whistling brigade)." As we heard it at the show? So where were you at the show? As far as the whistling brigade. Agreed. IMHO the single toughest aspect of FOB is avoiding the whistling brigade. There are ways to lessen the probability of this. You can start out by being kind to those around you before the show (such as offer tapes (and follow through) and other things....). Making a great FOB involves much more than just the taping aspects of it. Plus once you do it a lot, you tend to run into the same people at shows and then you really start cooking. People go out of there way to help you bc they know they will be getting tapes(remember how everything affects everything else)..... Based on my listening experiences at shows, the only thing I can conclude that your "big, full, encompassing sound" means is, "muddied sounds all jumbled together with no distinct instruments and very little soundstage --probably a bit boomy too.....". The OTS is 2 dimensional sound (I won't go as far as to say its a point though). A properly made FOB (to properly make an FOB one must be total balls out and have a little luck on your side too...many people just aren't cut out for this-nothing wrong with that though) is like being in another dimension.......... "It has balance and clarity that the FOB thoroughly lacks Unfortunately, I guess this supports the notion that sometimes placement is more important than the equipment list." Why is this unfortunate? To me its FORTUNATE. It means people can make great tapes with modest equipment if they do the more important things correctly. The FACT is that placement IS ALWAYS more impt than the equipment list. You can't buy love... you can't buy the dank sound without doing other things right too (such as placement). "Many of the FOB tapes have a more defined sound but everything sounds smaller." A well made FOB having smaller sound than a well made OTS? Oooooh Kaaaaaay.........You must be getting FOBs from the wrong people. Seems like your definition of Large must be "indistinct, muddied together and very little sound stage".... "My results seem to support the notion that taping near the board makes sense because that is where the engineer is hearing everything and making adjustments to perfect sound in that area, albeit still trying to maintain a good mix throughout the venue." The fact is that the closer you can get to the direct sound source the better. Why tape sound which has already been amplified, when you can get to it "pre amplification"? Plus your mics are generally better than the mics which mic the sound which is being amplfied. Not to mention many times the speaker stacks have problems or just sound horrible.... "The above points are not intended to arouse argument but are merely observations of comparisons that I would happily distribute if enough people are interested." How about this? Did you tape Phish 12-1-96? Lets tree your first set with my second. And let me know how many whistling brigades or even a SINGLE INSTANCE of crowd annoyance comes through on mine. Like Mark, I'm not trying to start a big whole debate on FOB vs AUD (that's like comparing apples and oranges:-), but when I saw the "Unfortunately, I guess this supports the notion that sometimes placement is more important than the equipment list.", I couldn't help but give my .02...... Pete
