From: kittles <kittles@bellatlantic.net> Subject: Portable or home deck first? Reply-To: kittles@bellatlantic.net Date: Fri, 20 Mar 1998 19:00:34 -0500 Hello all, I have researched getting my first deck for over a month now and I decided the PCM-R500 would be the best choice. However, I was just at a Disco Biscuits show and met a taper, which of course got me interested in taping. I also saw an ad for a fairly new (6 months; 20 hours) DA-P1 ($895.00) which furthered my interest. My question requires the advice of those with experience. Should I get a portable deck first (preferably a DA-P1), or should I wait, save some more money and buy the PCM-R500? Will the DA-P1 give me trouble (i.e. wear too quickly from over use) if I use it often for playback recording? If you could, please e mail me personally. Thanks very much, -Jim kittles@bellatlantic.net

From: Wagner One <wagner@teamschoeps.org> Subject: DAT Storage Solution Date: Fri, 20 Mar 1998 18:45:33 -0500 I finally got around to researching, ordering and constructing this DAT storage solution. The company that makes the components is called IKEA. It seems that their US stores are concentrated on the East coast, but there is one under construction in the Chicago area as well. I ordered all of materials ground, but it would have been even more cost effective to pick it up first hand. Holds an infinite amount of tapes! Ok, the least it will hold is around ~600 with the option of adding additional components to hold more as required. Could I have made it any easier? IKEA should be paying me! :) http://www.enteract.com/~wagner/dat/storage/index.html Mike -- Mike Wagner - wagner@teamschoeps.org A bad Dead show is better than a good day at work...

So I send the Well, computer backup software (even the free thing with Win95) verifies that the data was written correctly. So barring poor storage and tape failures (the Sony DDS I use for audio have been great) how can one go wrong? "Operator Error" is all I can think of. I think they are way heavy on the marketing hype/lies and light on the actual usefulness. Maybe for someone with only a notebook computer it would be handy. At $30/month, plus having to leave your computer on all night to transfer the data (remember, uploads are 28.8Kbps max) it is just silly. I have multiple harddisks, and I backup one to another; what's the chances of two harddrives failing simultaneously? Plus, every month or so I cut a CD of the backup files. The backup program I use is the one that comes with Win95. A good solution here might be a CD-RW drive. Every day backup to a new file or directory on the disc, and each month or whatever write the whole disc to a CD-R. Then wipe the CD-RW disc and start over. Oh yeah, and then you can make audio CDs too. And now, back to DAT! J p.s. looking for Chemical Bros, Bjork, Orb, and Orbital. Can anyone help me out? Surf by Surfwest Boy do we have got a great show coming up for you on March 21st! That's right, Blaze's, on 1306 E. 6th Street, will open their doors at 6 p.m. for "Surf by Surfwest"! Six bands, count them - six bands, will play the best surf music in the country for you and your fun loving friends. Here are the bands that will be playing: 1] Squid Vicious (in order starting at 6:00pm) 2] The Crabs 3] Sir Finks 4] 3 Balls of Fire 5] Sandblasters 6] Slacktone Tickets ($6.00) will be available at the door on March 21st @ 6 p.m. @ Blaze's on 1306 E. 6th Street. Advance tickets will be available Thursday, March 12th @ Local Flavor on 305B E. 5th Street and @ KO-OP Radio on 304 E. 5th Street. Slacktone will be featured on a live broadcast at 5:00PM on KO-OP. "Surf By Surfwest" was created as a reaction to South By Southwest (SXSW). For the last five years, the instrumental surf music community has been well-represented in standing room-only surf showcases featuring such prominent instrumental bands as the Mermen, the Insect Surfers, Death Valley, Huevos Rancheros, Man or Astro-Man?, Satan's Pilgrims, Teisco del Rey, and others. For 1998, SXSW has chosen to deny showcases to all but two instrumental bands while increasing the overall number of showcases and bands. For this reason, we have created Surf By Surfwest. ========================================================================= Ted James, guitarist for Squid Vicious and promoter of Surf by Surfwest invites Dat-heads and other tapers to bring their gear and tape away--no stealthing required. Any question or problems see Ted James and he'll put it right. All bands are trios. Slacktone is the hottest surf/instro band today. Recently on MTV as the house band for their Rockin' Jocks special. Dusty Watson, Slackone's drummer is also the drummer for Dick Dale, Agent Orange, Sugartooth, Jon & the Nightriders and the Boo Yaa Tribe. He is hot. Jay J. Hector

Recently I read someone given a bad review on hi-fi taping. I know it ain't dat, but when making analog tapes off dat tapes, you can't beat a good hi-fi machine. The letter referred to as using a hi-fi, like a big fancy tapedeck, which works. The letter complained about tapes being made from other machines sounding like crap, well, there's cheap hi-fi's and good hi-fi's. A little manual tracking won't hurt now and then either. If getting digital music off of hi-fi tape is so bad, why do so many tape trees use the first generation to be hi-fi? Why, because they make damn good copies.Just Use Good Equipment & Tape(Same As DAT).It Also Is Convenient As Hell Making Tapes Off FM Cable When You Can't Be At Home.I've Even Plugged Into SBD's With Hi-fi And Gotten Excellent Results.Anybody Else Who Likes This Format& Trades This Way,E-Mail Me At My Address. He was the only guy working there I really liked, AND (boy, I _really_ hate saying this) gave me the impression that he was really honest. (What do I mean by that... that he wasn't going to spout off B.S. about things he didn't know about-- like the current party line at the DAT store now that DDS tapes are like sandpaper. When I told them that Maxell admitted they used the same tape in both DDS and DAT tapes, they told me that Maxell tapes are abrasive, too!) >"sale" prices were higher than anything I've seen so far. I thought the sale was "next week"; i.e., not this week. (Starting Monday 3/23) I'll probably go, but I don't think as highly of the DAT Store as I used to. When the time comes for me to replace one of my old, worn D7s, I'll probably buy from a specialty mail-order source like Terrapin, American-Digital or Klay. I've never made a "major" purchase at the DAT Store, but from the time I bought a Sony mike there in late '96 to the time I bought my RMD3K there last summer, they seemed to have become a _lot_ more arrogant and elitist. If I do buy from there, it would mainly be because they're local to me (relative ease in getting warranty repairs--of course, the major warranty repair centers are also within driving distance from me :), and they specialize (you won't see me buying DAT gear from Circuit City/Good Guys/Best Buy/etc.). If I ask for Tim Murray and find that he's no longer working there, I'll see if I can't get a better deal elsewhere before giving them my credit card. Of course, I've also pledged to myself not to shop at stores where I feel I can only trust one or two people. :) (Bottom line: don't buy there unless you're getting a super-duper deal. :) (Last time I spoke with them, they told me they're not on the Internet, and don't hang around DAT Heads too much. My only concern is that the jack itself (the yellow tipped DC barrel plug) gets warm to the touch. I cautious about powering the pack for a long time because I'm afraid of having the plug overheat and do some major damage. So my question is...is this heating up of the plug normal? am I just being paranoid, or is something dangerously wrong with my battery pack. That's it, thanks in advance! Paul PS. Datheads has always been an excellent source for info and everybody has been extremely helpful...I can't wait until I exit newbie status and am able to provide answers for other newbies such as myself. Anyhow, thanks.
