Hello,
I know that there were other tapers out there and somebody has to have
gotten a good recording. Mine captured the conversation that was going
on in the aisle in front of me perfectly, but the music didn't come
through so great. I would love to get a better copy. This was a great
show. Ratdog just keeps getting better. I, unfortunately, have my
other deck in the shop right now, so I can only offer B&P. Will return
the kindness in trade when the deck comes back. Can anyone help me out?
Thanks,

MD has made great strides. They sound very good now, even after a few
generations of copying, despite the lossy ATRAC compression.

The D7 uses a 7-pin jack for digital I/O. Portable MDs use an optical
miniplug.

What 'larger' mics do people stealth with aside from the
CoreSounds/Sonic Studios - basically I am wanting to upgrade from
my CoreSound Cardioids (which I have gotten some fantastic recordings from)
and am wondering if I should go to the B&K omnis that CS/SS are selling
($900-1400) or something else (if so what), I know it depends on usage
so I would like to be able to stealth these things in pretty tight
situations for primarily louder rock shows - and mostly smaller venues.
I would be very interested in what people have to say.

I have a bunch of cassettes that I would like to move to DAT and CDR,
if I bring them onto my computer (CS>DAT>HD) - and have cooledit pro and
soundforge to use, what re-eq methodology should I use to increase
dyanmic range and reduce hiss? (or what should I do)
Off the top of my head I would say
1) remove hiss
2) normalize
Is this totally wrong or could some of the sound engineers on this
list give me reccos as to how to go about this and what tools to use.

If anyone out there will be in Wisconsin on these dates, is stealth capable
(neither act is anti-taping (e-mail for quotes if you wish), but for
whatever reason, can't/don't allow board access or stands/open taping), and
would be available to tape one or more of these nights, I'd appreciate
hearing from you.
Desperate enough to pay for your ticket if it comes to that (unfortunately
the Madison date is already sold out...) and certainly willing to work
out a nice trade. More than willing to work with unideckers, too.

Interested in both acts as there will probably be collaboration between both
in at least one or the other's sets (since they've contributed to one
another's albums in the past). After years of performing as part of a trio,
then a quartet, and now a quintet, this will mark the only appearance of the
Nields sisters as a duo in recent memory and I'd hate to not hear it.
And now that I'm done pleading...
Did anyone receive digests 138 or 141? Neither showed up in my mail and
neither are in the archives. I suppose 138 may or may not have been
created, but 141 should have been, if nothing else, auto generated on the
22nd. If you've sent something to the list recently and haven't
gotten a response, you might want to check to make sure it didn't fall into
one of those mystery digests...

Hey folks,
Don't usually go looking for trades on this list because there are
usually band specific lists that are more appropriate but I don't know of
one for Big Head. Anyhow back in '91 before I started listening to Phish
and all those other great jam bands that are around today; this was the
first jam band that caught my ear (yeah I know they don't jam in the same
way as Phish, Dead, et all). I imagine they probably allowed taping back
then since they were on the HORDE tour before it became useless in IMHO.
I don't think they allow taping anymore but have broadcast shows that
hopefully have been taped by some dat-head. So if anyone has some Big
Head on dat that they would be willing to trade with me; I would greatly
appreciate it. List available upon request. Also if anyone knows of a
more appropriate list to send this to; I would appreciate that info as
well. Thanks for the BW!
have a good one,

p.s. If anyone taped the Ben Harper FM broadcast from the Avalon here in

but who knows where it ended up!
Thanks guys! When you said FREE I guess you really meant it!
I've been ordering from Megasoft, their postage on my last order of 41 DATs
was $4.50, and for an almost identical order I just received (36 DATs) they
hit me with $12 shipping & handling! I'm wondering what made it triple in cost

One other hypothesis. Most of the tapes were rewound to 2-3 minutes into
the tape and most of the problems were found at the end. In addition to
the effect of gravity causing shear stresses bw the layers of tape (since
most of the tapes were stored on the large side of the case), I suspect the
following is equally (quite possibly more) important. During storage, the
"end of the tape" was tightly wound inside all the rest of tape since most
of your tapes were stored 2-3 minutes from the beginning. I suspect the
overall forces, including the "normal" forces which act normal to the plane
of tape are greatest in this inner region since it is confined by all the
tape around it(and its tightness). Over an extended period of time these
normal forces (in addition to the ones you mention (shear)) probably take
their toll. The tighter radius of curvature (during storage your "end of
tape" was stored in a tighter/smaller radius of curvature than the
beginning region of tape)may also play a role(it does play a role, how
significant a role it plays is another story, I say it shouldn't be
overlooked)...........Pete

I was wondering if anyone has heard anything about hearing damage caused
by elevators? I work on the 30th floor of a huge building, and we have
elevators that travel extremely fast (about 1 floor per second) For the
last few months I've noticed that the pressure build-up as I go up or
down doesn't clear as fast as it used to, and throughout the day I'm
constantly trying to 'clear' my ears. Sometimes I go all day without
them clearing, and as a result have a hard time hearing certain things
(including music) Any words or suggestions?
Thanks.

By DARLENE SUPERVILLE
Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Thousands of small businesses -- including restaurants,
barbershops and funeral parlors -- wouldn't have to pay licensing fees for
piped-in copyrighted music under a bill the House passed Wednesday.
The licensing provision was added to a broader measure that passed by voice
vote. The bill would extend copyright protections for creative works, such as
music, by 20 years, and simultaneously bring U.S. law in line with existing
international copyright policies.
The proposal advanced to the Senate.
The fight over music licensing fees was portrayed by fee opponents as one
that pitted struggling small businesses against greedy musicians.
Business owners won the first round, with an assist from the National
Restaurant Association, the National Federation of Independent Businesses and
other associations.
But singers and songwriters said the fact that many of them are
small-business people who also are struggling to make a living was lost in the
lengthy debate over the provision.
"It affects the guy who only has one hit record and doesn't make a great
deal of money," said Motown star Smokey Robinson, who lobbied House members and
watched the debate. "The songs are our business. This is what we sell."
The sponsor, Rep. James Sensenbrenner, Wis., described instances in which
music licensing societies collect multiple payments for material or small
business owners are hassled for money that they didn't know should have been
paid.
"That's a scam and that's what my amendment reforms," he said.
The
amendment, adopted 297-112, would exempt all businesses with up to 3,500 square
feet of space from paying fees for music broadcast via radio or television
unless admission is charged. Also covered are larger business that broadcast
their entertainment with no more than six speakers and-or two television sets.
The exemptions don't apply to live or recorded music where the proprietor
controls the content, Sensenbrenner said.
It also would allow business owners with rate disputes with a music
licensing society to settle them locally. They currently are resolved in court
in New York.
One music licensing groups, the American Society of Composers, Authors and
Publishers, said its members could lose at least 15 percent of their income --
ranging from a few hundred to several thousands of dollars annually -- if the
exemption became law.
ASCAP's average licensing fee amounts to $1.58 per day, which Robinson
called a "very, very, very menial" price for restaurants and retail
establishments that operate daily.
Criticism of the provision was abundant.
Rep. Lloyd Dogget, D-Texas, said it was based on the simple premise that "if
you can't get someone else's property for free, then pass a law to allow you to
steal it from them."
Rep. Joe Scarborough, R-Fla., complained that the provision trampled on the
property rights of musicians. "For us to just gut their ability to earn a
living ... is absolutely ridiculous," he said.
Earlier, the House defeated, by a vote of 259-150, a narrower amendment by
Rep. Bill McCollum, R-Fla., that would have limited the licensing fee exemption
to restaurants and bars only.
It also would have used federal courts to resolve rate disputes.
Supporters said extending the copyright law would benefit the United States.
U.S. copyright law gives authors, songwriters and other artists exclusive
rights to their work for
life, plus 50 years. Most European countries offered the same protection until
1995, when the policy was extended to life plus 70 years.
Under an 1886 international treaty to which the United States adheres,
member countries must honor the copyright protections of foreign works sold and
used commercially in their countries.
But without a change, many American works would become widely available at
dates earlier than their foreign counterparts, jeopardizing millions of dollars
in export revenue, lawmakers said.

I received a show, MSG 93 or 94 w/B. Marsalis
(sp?), from a friend of mine when I started
trading, almost two years ago. It contains a
filler which I'm trying to find a complete copy
of...
Neither I nor my friend know the date of the show,
but it is definitely not recent. I'd say it was
sometime in the 70's. The show starts with
someone requesting that the "House lights to be
turned off...let's just go by the light of this
one candle..." It's a rather funny opening...
Just before the music begins, the announcer says
"Merrimac Community College presents Grateful
Dead." It sounds like a very intimate show and
I'd love to get a complete copy.
Thanks for any help at all.

......This post is in two parts......
1. I was wondering if there is a DAT of Trey Annastasio's Senior Thesis,
The Man Who Stepped into Yesturday, out there or not? If there is and
someone is willing to trade for it, please e-me about it. I have a
small, but humble collection of shows. Maybe, I might have something
that you would like?
2. Also, I have a question concerning DAT tapes. What is the difference
between audio DATs, Pro DATs, and DDS (computer grade DATs). I see some
talk about them, but being that I am a 'novice' and my language
aquisition about DAT terminology is limited, could someone explain, in
layman's terms, what the differences are? Also, Is there a site that
would list all the dats that are currently being manufacured and their
order of quality? I tend to assume that the DATs that are sold at the
places that I get them are the best, but I would personally like to
know, in comparison, what it is that I am buying. Any help would be
grateful :-P. Thank-you.
