From: Anders Johansson <ajo@algonet.se> Subject: D100 and IDs Reply-To: ajo@algonet.se Date: Fri, 27 Mar 1998 20:34:30 +0100 When I go from D7>coax>DA-20 I get the music and the IDs over to the copy (the DA in auto mode of course) . When I do the same with the D100 I don't get the start IDs over! I have also tried to use the new optical cable POC-DA12P connected to the D7 and using the Fostex COP-1 - but the same result: no IDs. I have not used the RM-D100K device so far - it so expensive. How many of you D100 owners get the start codes over to the copy when you go from the D100?? replies appreciated Anders -- It's the latest gigg I ever played in my whole life - but what the heck - here we go! 1994 M.S.
From: Anders Johansson <ajo@algonet.se> Subject: Tascam DA-20 and lp mode Reply-To: ajo@algonet.se Date: Fri, 27 Mar 1998 20:21:52 +0100 I have many lp-mode 32 kHz tapes of excellent quality. The mayor part of these were recorded with a Sony 690 deck. When I play these tapes on the DA-20 I get small drop outs every five minutes. The error rate is excellent - no problem (E00 00). When I get back to the location with the drop out - it's not there! But after a couple of minutes I get another one etcetera. When I play the same tape on my D7 or D100 there are no drop outs! Could it be that the DA-20 is "not so well adjusted" for lp mode?? The drum on the DA is in perfect shape. Any one out here with a good idea?? all the best from Anders -- It's the latest gigg I ever played in my whole life - but what the heck - here we go! 1994 M.S.

From: CLARKDA@NKU.EDU Subject: 3-21-98 Date: Fri, 27 Mar 1998 14:46:51 -0400 (EDT) Hey all, I posted this last week but I guess it was lost in one of the missing digests. I taped Fat Mama on 3-21-98 in Cincinnati, Oh. They're a Boulder-based 7 piece jazz band. A little rock and/or funk in there, too. If anyone is interested, I'll roll some copies. The recording is very nice [SBD>SBM-1>DA-P1 @ 44.1 kHz] and I think you jazz enthusiasts would probably dig it. If there's enough interest out there, I'll assemble a little mini-tree. Show runs 2:20 so I can fill it with an up and coming local band (Ray's Music Exchange) who opened that night. Ray's is in the same vein as Fat Mama, creating a name for themselves and I believe playing one of the lesser side stages at Horde this year as well. Send e-mail to me w/ Fat Mama 3-21-98 in the subject line. --Dan
From: AZawodny@mobile.bam.com Subject: dat tape life Date: 27 Mar 98 15:23:04 EST Regarding DAT longevity: I have DAT tapes that I recorded in 1991 that play flawlessly today, and they were Denon DT120s that I ran copies of my bands demo off onto cassette, so it got the shit played out of it. AZ

From: rjk1@cs.wustl.edu (bob) Subject: Wisconsin taper(s) wanted / Missing Digests Date: Fri, 27 Mar 1998 16:13:40 -0600 Did anyone receive digests 138, 141, or 147? None of them showed up in my mail nor are they in the archives. I suppose 138 may or may not have been created, but I sent this post mid-day yesterday, right where digest 147 should have been (apologies if anyone receives this twice). 141 should have been, if nothing else, auto generated on the 22nd... Something appears broken... Anyway, if you've sent something to the list recently and haven't gotten a response, you might want to check to make sure it didn't fall into one of those digests... And now on with the pleading: I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who: - will be in Wisconsin on these dates - is stealth capable (neither act is anti-taping (e-mail for quotes if you wish), but for whatever reason, can't/don't allow board access or stands/ open taping), - would be available to tape one or more of these nights Wed, Apr 8, 1998 @ 7:30 pm - Dar Williams* / Katryna & Nerissa Nields Lawrence University, Stansbury Theater, Appleton*, WI 920-832-6749, Katryna & Nerissa Nields open, $4(student)/$12(public) Thu, Apr 9, 1998 @ 8:30 pm - Dar Williams* / Katryna & Nerissa Nields The Rave, Milwaukee*, WI 414-342-7283, Katryna & Nerissa Nields open, $11 Fri, Apr 10, 1998 @ 8:00 pm - Dar Williams* / Katryna & Nerissa Nields Barrymore Theatre, Madison*, WI 608-241-8633, Katryna & Nerissa Nields open, $15 **SOLD OUT** Desperate enough to pay for your ticket if it comes to that (unfortunately the Madison date is already sold out... If you've already got a ticket and are planning on taping, I'd *really* like to hear from you... ;) ) and certainly willing to work out a nice trade. More than willing to work with unideckers, too. Interested in both acts as there will probably be collaboration between both in at least one or the other's sets (since they've contributed to one another's albums in the past). After years of performing as part of a trio, then a quartet, and now a quintet, this will mark the only appearance of the Nields sisters as a duo in recent memory and I'd hate to not hear these. bob

From: Keith Moulton <km34@columbia.edu> Subject: recording DAT to CD-R Reply-To: Keith Moulton <km34@columbia.edu> Date: Fri, 27 Mar 1998 17:32:35 -0500 (EST) > From: Howard Crowe <howardc@promicro.co.uk> wrote: > If I record the tape to the PC's hard disk as one file, what software can I > use to insert track markers (don't know if there's a proper term for this) > into a single wav file so that when it's written to CD you can skip tracks There's a great little program called CDWave available at http://resource.simplenet.com/files/cdwav.zip that allows you to easily split up long wav files into separate files easily. You can do the same thing with CoolEdit but it's a little more cumbersome. > Or should each track be recorded individually and burned using the DAO > setting? If so, how can I ensure a clean and accurate transition from one > track to another? Recording each track individually accomplishes the same thing. Basically, one wav file = one track. Whichever way you go depends simply on what's most convenient. You should pretty much always get your wav files loaded onto your hard drive and disc layout before burning them all at once in DAO mode. > Also, what can I do (if anything) about DAT's recorded at 48kHz? Well, if you're just going to use your analogue line input then you don't have to do anything differently. If you later on decide to get a sound card with SP/DIF inputs then you will have to make sure that it can handle 48kHz (the Guillemot HomeStudio card, for example, won't), and you will have to consider the best way to resample it to go onto the standard 44kHz CD. > At present it would just be recording through the line input on my > Soundcard (Soundblaster AWE32), so there's none of this SP/DIF stuff > transfering codes from the DAT etc. Y'know, I started with an integrated SoundBlaster chip with the AWE32 ISA upgrade card on my Dell, and it sounded really bad. Extremely poor frequency response (all "s"'s disappeared). So I got the $40 Ensoniq Audio PCI and it made all the difference in the world, even though it (of course) lacks SPDIF. I got mine at www.carlind.com. I have a feeling that prices of soundcards with SPDIF are going to drop quite a bit in the next year so I'll wait. Hope this helps, Keith Moulton. Ahhhh, Gary, this posting warmed my li'l heart. I too, fell prey to the braggadosio of Telarc's cannon claims on their 1978 1812 Overture recording... ...HOWEVER... I got it WAY before CD's came out, on silky vinyl in 1979 or '80. The record would end up getting a lot of play from me NOT for the sound quality, but rather for the laugh-riot HOP the tonearm would make off of the record when the cannon sounded (unless you weighted the tonearm with, say, an apple). Nothing shows the grace and power of Our Nation's Mighty Ordnance than a decisive BLOW to all our turntables. Plus it was a great party trick. Incidently, the grooves, at the point of those shots, spread out dramatically and zig-zagged almost vertically. No wonder they invented lasers! Sorry for the divergence...back down into the soop.... This is the most important part. But to upgrade........new microphones. Truthfully, I have NEVER seen Nakamichi microphone use in the professional field. My suggestion would be to rent a pair of mics from the local pro-sound shop..... and give them a whirl. Usually the shop will credit your rental fee if you purchase through them. Just give them an ask as to which mics to try. Many companies produce many good mics in many price ranges. Give a few a listen! Regards, Andrew Hofstetter Reuters TV Int. Ltd. New York Bureau
From: pkmin@rsc.rockwell.com Subject: Re:interesting findings working with old DATs Date: Fri, 27 Mar 1998 17:44:48 -0800 One other hypothesis. Most of the tapes were rewound to 2-3 minutes into the tape and most of the problems were found at the end. In addition to the effect of gravity (combined with the weight of the tape itself) causing shear stresses bw the layers of tape (since most of the tapes were stored on the large side of the case), I suspect the following is equally (quite possibly more) important. During storage, the "end of the tape" was tightly wound inside all the rest of tape since most of your tapes were stored 2-3 minutes from the beginning. I suspect the overall forces, including the normal forces which act normal (perpendicular)to the "plane" (since the tape is wound its not really planar so really I'm talking about the overall inward radial forces)of tape are greatest in this inner region since it is confined by all the tape around it(and its tightness). Over an extended period of time these "inward radial forces" (in addition to the shear forces you mention) may take their toll. The tighter radius of curvature (during storage your "end of tape" was stored in a tighter/smaller radius of curvature than the beginning region of tape)may also play a role. It does play a role since tensile stresses are developed on the magnetic media side and compressive stresses are developed on the back side. How significant a role it plays is another story, I say it shouldn't be overlooked since these stresses make it easier for things to attack (such as moisture/humidity/rusting). I'm pretty certain that tape being wrapped in a circle is not its "neutral/natural/at ease position". It would do better if it could lay flat(but thats unrealistic)............Pete

From: Seeley Scott <Seeley_Scott@prc.com> Subject: DAT tapes getting old? Date: Fri, 27 Mar 1998 23:32:18 -0500 >Rather than back up all your DATs every 2-3 years >(an expensive, time-consuming practice that also >eats into time that could be spent cloning new DATs) >practice "massive parallel backups", i.e. trade with >lots of people and spread the music around. Absolutely. Whenever I get in an impossible-to-find or beloved tape, I always send out a few copies right away. Send 'em off for B&P to newbies or old trading partners, contact people I know are interested in that particular artist and offer a trade, etc. I also keep a log of everyone I've traded with & what was traded, and am perfectly comfortable begging them for a replacement copy later if one of my tapes craps out down the road. And of course I'm always eager to help out others if they should hit me up for a replacement sometime (as a matter of fact, one did just this week - hiya Joe!). This is one of those rare cases where it's both: a) good karma, and b) can save your weenie butt in case the shit ever hits the fan. :-) peace, Scott
