From: Lerdawg <Lerdawg@aol.com> Subject: Extra T.J. Kirk DAT Date: Sat, 28 Mar 1998 16:18:15 EST Hello, I have an extra 90m T.J. Kirk DAT available to the first one who emails me and can supply a blank and postage. The show is from the Elbo Room in Chicago, 11/2/96, recorded with Neumann KM-140 microphones. This is the (infamous) show where Charlie Hunter threatened to walk out and leave if the people didn't stop smoking! He also tells the crowd to all "go on back to the frat-house". Musically, though, the tape is incredible! Also on this 90m is Phish from Austin, TX 7/26/97 Set 1, and the flatbed truck jam from the Clifford Ball. Email me at Lerdawg@aol.com Mike

From: ABershaw <ABershaw@aol.com> Subject: Inquiry of Rowan/Grisman collectors Date: Sat, 28 Mar 1998 16:58:21 EST Hi all, Have any Peter Rowan/David Grisman collectors ever run across a live recording of their late 1960's band Earth Opera? Earth Opera's 2nd album has striking resemblances to the Dead's 2nd album "Anthem Of The Sun". I'm simply curious if ANY live recordings exist & I'd love to listen to one. Thanks for the inquiry space! Alan

You'll want to normalize the entire tape in one .wav file, (both sides) so that the mastered dynamics are preserved.>> I have to interject that doing this to your audio, unless it is pretty bad to begin with, only makes it sound worse in our tests. Nobody's "normalizing" program helps the audio; it usually degrades it. But if that is *all* you've got...... <<1) SoundForge has an expensive noise reduction plug-in that works great with cassettes. You just mouse over a sample of the tape hiss from the beginning or end of the tape or between songs, to get a template for the noise, and then hit go. It believe there are less expensive alternatives to SF.>> Two things; in reverse. There may indeed be cheaper NR plugins, but they sound worse than SoundForge. Output sensitivity is 1.4mV/Pa; frequency response 30 - 17000 Hz, +/- 2 dB; max SPL about 128 dB for 0.5% distortion; impedance 200 ohm; XLR outputs. The main feature is a double-element system - one for 800 - 17000 Hz coaxially mounted over the other for 30 - 800 Hz - essentially freeing the mic of the "proximity effect" which dogs all pressure gradient microphones. I haven't used D 200E's but the more refined (and 50% dearer) big brothers, the D 202ES, based on the same double-element principle, were the first serious mic's I owned and I would suggest you look out for bargains in those. These are "Studio quality" mic's, close-toleranced for better stereo pair matching, with a useful variable bass roll-off of 0 - 20 dB at 50 Hz. Some of my old ORTF and NOS array recordings made with the D 202ES's dynamics don't sound too shabby at all when compared to subsequent efforts with Calrec and Schoeps condensers. You should be able to get a half decent recording with an XY pair of D 200E's, especially at pop venues where the lower mic output levels and phantom-free operation may be welcome. The rather large unit size, though, and the inability to separate the capsule from the body would make it difficult to stealth. Unless of course your definition of stealth agrees with mine.... having your gear hanging quietly from the roof of the hall before the public starts streaming in the door <g>. __ Rada R. I"ve experienced extensive problems and would like to know where I can have my story be heard. Thanks for any help you provide. < I wrote to the Sony headquarters in Germany. = I described the problem with my machine from a *technical* point of view. (You may need assistance for this. Probably you will have to pay some dollars to a service technician who opens up the case of the recorder and does some measurements with an oscilloscope. Ask him, whether you = may be present at the time he performs this. Have a camera with you. = Take pictures of what can be seen on the scope screen. Write down the = comments of the technician.) The letters included copies of the Sony repair center documents which = proofed that Sony two times tried to repair the machine within = warranty. I mentioned that with each of this repairs the constitution of the machine became worse. To serve as evidence I accompanied the letters with tapes recorded on the machine. = They asked me to ship the machine to the Sony Germany central service center and offered me repair free of charge. I shipped the machine accompanied by a letter in which I wrote that I wouldn't be interested in getting the recorder back. Instead I would = prefer to bring my relation with Sony to an end. The Sony chief technician inspected the machine and reported to the = headquarter. = Then I got my money back. The keynote of my argumentation was: I wanted a recorder to make recordings which can be played back. You offered me such a recorder. I payed you money for it. There is proof of evidence that the recorder you sold me isn't suited for the above mentioned purpose. Therfore I suggest you the cancellation of the contract. My first impression after having my money back was, that they = simply wanted to get rid of me. The proceedings I initiated began = to be more expensive for them than the refund for the recorder. But about three months later I received a letter from Sony, = accompanied by a questionaire and calling card. It obviously was = part of an action for the improvement of knowledge about the = opinion of unsatisfied Sony customers regarding Sony products = and service. From: "Ross Warren, Jr." <rwarren@i-america.net> Subject: D8/D100 questions Date: Sun, 29 Mar 1998 09:39:03 -0500 Croweman, Send your D8 to ProDigital and get them to fix your loose jack. Probably would not cost very much at all. Or use Oade Bros, whichever is closer to you. Don't send it to Sony. Their flat rate repair is way over priced for getting a new jack soldered on. Only use Sony if the repair is for something like new heads. Pro Digital Inc. 700-B Parkway Blvd. Broomall, PA 19008 Phone: 610-353-2400 As for the D100 being an upgrade: Yes, it has a better, cleaner preamp than the D7/8 ever did. And yes, it is noticeable on the recordings when done through the Mic In. I started with the D7 and moved to a D100 (still have the D7 as a "spare" and for times when my nephew wants to record something on the same night that I want to do something different, i.e. local bar show vs Phish). I had Sony (via ProDigital) put new heads on the D7 so hopefully (knock on wood) it'll last a good long time. Good luck. Moving to a new D100 would be nice, but don't just "throw away" your D8 when it could be fixed for under a 100 bucks. BTW, the D100 is not battery friendly. I get around 1:45 on a set of AA's if I DON'T use the light very much OR give a patch out (something hard to do at a Phish show where there are lots of people wanting patches out). And the NImH batteries that come with the D100 are not very reliable. Had them last only 20 minutes on me after an overnight charge, but then last 2 hours the next time. I don't trust them for recording anymore, just for playback. I can get away with AA's when running stealth. The 1:45 to 2 hour time is fine for most bar shows. However be aware that giving a patch out (or running headphones) will significantly reduce recording time by almost half! So much so that for open taping shows like Phish or WSP, I use a homebuilt 3 - D cell battery pack for my D100. It'll run the thing for 10 to 16 hours depending on light/patch out conditions. That is powering it thru the external power jack. People that have modified their D100's to be powered thru the INTERNAL battery contacts and have reported getting 45 hours of use with a 3 - D cell powerpack. Also, I've heard rumors that Eco-Charge is working on a rechargeable powerpack for the D100/M1. That'll be nice. Peace, Ross Warren, Jr. infinite diversity, infinite combinations
