This week I am going to attempt to stealth my first recording with my
month old M1 and CSB mike and would like to hear fellow M1 owners'
experiences...
I experimented a bit last week around NYC and set the levels to Auto AGC
with 0dB attenuation. The results for recording the "ambience" of the
walk walking from Port Authority to my office were quite good.
The performance I am recording will be all acoustic (voice and guitars)
with no amplification; I will most likely be sitting quite close.
Any reccomendations would be great! I plan on setting the attenuation
this time to -20dB... any thoughts...?
Thanks in advance!

Date: Mon, 30 Mar 1998 08:02:56 -0500
I made the major mistake.... I didn't listen to a tape I received in a
trade as soon as I got it. And now I need to replace it and can't remember
who I got it from. Please, if you read this and know who you are will you
contact me?
I have a DSBD of DMB @ Hampton, VA 12-30 and 31 '95
It's on an older kao.
Tape #1 has some diginoise throughout ( is this inherit in the master?).
Tape #2 won't play in my D5!!!
It sheds so much I had to clean the deck twice to allow it to play and once
I realized it WAS the tape shedding I refused to play it any more.
And I was in the middle of cloning for a buddy.
It someone has the time for a trade for this tape I'd really like to have
this show...one of the last of dsbd's to come from DMB I should think.
Could someone help?
Later,
Jay

Hello,
I think that this got lost in the mysterious, missing digests. If it
comes through twice, I apologize.
I know that there were other tapers out there and somebody has to have
gotten a good recording. I managed to capture the conversation that was
going on in the aisle in front of me perfectly, but the music didn't
come through so great. I would love to get a better copy. This was a
great show. Ratdog just keeps getting better. I have plenty to trade.
Thanks,

Subject: Re: Upgrading Nakamichi 300 Mic ?
Date: Mon, 30 Mar 1998 10:56:22 -0800
Another simple upgrade is an SBM1(Sony)external A>D convertor since you
appear rather content with your NAK 300's. You would now run
NAK300>SBM1>Deck. What's nice about this upgrade is that it is cheaper
than upgrading mics, it will improve the sound (this is debatable depending
on what your current portable dat deck situation is, but I say the SBM1 is
on par/better than the built in A>D of any portable(my opinion I realize
there are some really nice A>D's and mic pres in stock decks - Panasonic
SV255 comes to mind), and I feel its (SBM1)built in mic-pre is
respectable), and it can be used down the road when you do upgrade mics.
I would also recomend an external rechargable battery if you go the SBM1
route....it tends to devour AA's--a little over 3 hours per 4 alkalines has
been my experience........Pete

AFAIK the rmt-d7 doesn't have any inputs. It's just a simple 'control panel'
with a wire ending in a 7-pin plug. Noting fancy but VERY useful in stealth
situations, imho.

Last night I went to see Bill Frisell open for MMW. I was not at all
excited about the MMW show (except for Martin, who is indeed a great
drummer), but I know many of you are fans. Hence this offer. The show
was about 1:34, is on a Maxell 90meter, recorded with modded MarcSounds
from the balcony right in front of the PA. Turned out very nicely in
spite of the *very* reverberant venue. Apparently they played mostly
new material.
If you'd like this master (or would like to set up a future trade for
the Frisell), please contact me with a trade offer.

Really hard for me to estimate. Apparently Panasonic doesn't implement a method of
logging the hours. Maybe it's not so easy, but it's a pity, seems like this would
be quite useful information. I *may* have as many as 1000-1500 hours on the head,
the apparent approximate minimum to consider a head replacement for this particular
head?

The errors appear to be high (1000+) but it took me awhile to figure out how to read
the display (I didn't understand about the A+B head stuff and assumed each used a
two digit number). I guess I'm thick about these things, but actually several
parameters of the debugging method(s) eluded me while looking at this problem:
All the instructions I could collect on cleaning the heads (FAQ, archives) omitted
the tiniest details describing for instance, exactly what the heads look like and
exactly where they are. Same goes for the drum and where to place fingers to spin
the drum etc. Took me a long time to figure out I was cleaning the drum very well,
but have likely missed the heads themselves! Then again, I'm the same idiot who
never once had the heads cleaned in seven years. One maddening thing consistent
with most of the instructions from various sources was the suggestion that one
'should have done this before', ie if it's your first time, you're on your own! I've
used and maintained analog gear professionally for years and would never have
considered not cleaning the heads on analog recorders but somehow was of the mind
that with video/dat decks one was better off with the 'don't fix it if it ain't
broke' approach. Stupid (me) and an incorrect interpretation of what most people do
apparently (ie regular cleaning). ESPECIALLY WITH 90 METER DDS TAPES which I
didn't mention I used and which leads me to the next paragraph.
After reading the information at (http://www.oade.com/tapers/faq-general.html ) I'm
convinced the 90 meter tapes are a bad idea and likely my problem because
of/combined with my dumb non-maintenace approach. At the very least there should be
a pointer to the Oade inforamtion in the Dat-heads FAQ which mentions nothing about
potential *machine* problems using 90 meter DDS tapes. I wish I'd known about the
Oade FAQ before. This subject has of course come up many times on the list and the
Oade's opinions posted as I can see from the archives, but I somehow missed it
and/or it never sank in. Also, atypical of the random list post, this
information/opinion is backed up by professional experience. I'm very impressed
with the information the Oade site makes available, again VERY atypical of
professionals who repair things to take/have the time or inclination to make this
available to the common man. I do wish the text of their FAQ was available in one
shot though.
I bet my problem isn't head wear, but that the heads are so covered in crap I may
never get them clean. Now that I know what *may* be going on, I'm not surprised one
bit. Now the question is, is it worth a head replacement? I like the machine and
the transport probably hasn't seen more than 1000 hours. I would probably buy
something modest like a Tascam DA-20 (but would like the Panasonic 3800 the Oades
think so highly of). Actually, having an 'input metering without rec/pause' feature
is important to me.....I find the lack of this incredibly stupid and annoying. I
know the Otari DTR-8S did/does this and is affordable. Any opinions on this machine
versus the Tascam DA-20/DA-30/Fostex D-5/Panasonic 3800 appreciated. Perhaps it
would be worth repairing the DA-10 to be used as a dubbing deck since I only have
one. I'll probably be giving the Oades some business if only for the fact that they
have really impressed me with the info they make available at their web site. I
sure don't see my local repair shop doing anything like that.
