Subject: My D-100 experience.
Reply-To: andyhahn@earthlink.net
Date: Mon, 30 Mar 1998 20:22:18 -0700
I have been pleased with my D-100 and feel lucky to have one. I had a
D8 for a while and had liked it, but now that I have made the change
over to the D-100, I like it quite alot. [Thanks KLAY for the info,
help, and advice :)] I have had it for a while and cloned with it, but
hadn't had the chance to Master a show with it until the other night. I
found it quite secure to have. (sometimes stealthing has it's stresses).
But because of the size, I thought that it was easy to bring in and
record with. There were a couple of things that I found out with the
D-100 that I wish it had, like the D8 that I had before.
For example, the D-100 that I have, the buttons on it were a bit too
easy to press. Before the show had begun I was checking the levels and
had accidently glazed my fingers over the pause button and that had set
it off. I had to press it again, to stop it. The buttons on the D-100,
i.e. the REc and Pause buttons are raised off the machine, I assume for
easy pressing, but I found it too easy to accidently press. On the D8,
that I had before, I think that the buttons weren't that easy to press
down. So, I never had the problem of accidental pressure until the
other night when I thought about it. Also, the light button and the
volume controls are on the same structural plane as the body of the
machine. Both of these functions on the D-100 are pretty close to one
another. There were a few times that I had kept pressing the (-)volume
instead of the light. I know that I don't have the sensitivity of
someone that is blind, when it comes to touch, but I found that a bit
bothersome. Also, another thing that I thought while I was taping was
the power drain on the batteries. I have just recently read about the
talk of the power drain that this machine takes. And that was a bit
worrisome durring th show. I just hope that the shows I go to don't do
sets passed an hour forty-five minutes...
Another thing that I thought of was why does the D-100 have so many
more noises than the D8? For example, when I put in a tape in the
D-100, there are several more "DZZT" sounds and it does take longer to
cue-up than the D-8. It wasn't a problem durring the show. I had
noticed it the first day that I had recieved it in the mail. It's
probally the D-100 personality, but I was just wondering?
All in all, I have been pleased with my D-100. Things aren't perfect
and nor am I. I also don't know the D-100 like I did my D8. It's just
a matter of time until I know all the little ideosyncracies of the
D-100. I guess that I wrote this to relativily new owners to the D-100
or thinking about getting one, I thought that I just might share my
thoughts and experiences about it to you all. Thank-you for reading.

Hello,
I was looking over Alex Sloley’s Sound Card page and these really stood
out. I checked their homepage and sent them some email , but I am not
very optimistic, as Alex’s page said they failed to respond to several
of someone’s emails. Has anyone out there seen any of these cards? Can
they be had (here in the US)? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I don't know, I am rather knew to DATs but with my D8, whenever I've
loaded a show that doesn't seem to work (ie; loading it, pressing play,
and having the power cut off [light going off]), all I do is open the
front part of the tape, which unlocks the tape's wheels, and manually
(with a pencil or pen or what not) turn the tape forward for a minute or
so. Whatever glitch that was in the tape that makes it cut the power to
the deck is passed and I've been able to listen and clone the tape fine.
You might want to try that. Sorry for the lack of professionalism.
Peace,
MJ

Dear friends,
due to the change of job I am quitting my old e-mail address, but I should
be back in a couple of months with a new one.
I am also stopping my trades for some weeks, since I have 'burned' all my
blank tapes (it's impressive to see how fast they disappear....).
I'll post here a memo with the new e-mail, in the meantime I have created
an 'emergency' address (see below) where people can try to reach me, but
beware, I will be able to access it only once in a while!!
I want also to thank all the very nice people I met who traded with me, and
wish you all happy taping!

I've noticed some discussion as to CD-R mastering programs. Does anyone
know what programs for Macintosh will allow indexing of live shows
without splitting into individual tracks (with a subsequent 2 second gap
between each)? Currently using Toast.
Thanks

>Was that a standard Sony warranty (24 months)?
Yes, it was a *European* standard warranty. The period covered by the =
European Sony warranty depends on which product you buy. I called Sony
in order to find out the warranty period for the 690 before I decided
to buy it.
Sony just had prolonged that period to 24 months.
Jules, I don't know where you reside and what the intention of your =
questions is, but you have to take national pricing plans into account =
when comparing warranty periods. Prices for DAT recorders are significant=
ly
higher in Germany than in the US. In the US warranty periods usually seem=
=
to be shorter. But you can buy an external warranty which is an unusual
procedure in Germany. So in *some* cases this may end up with the same pr=
ice
and the same warranty period.
But usually prices are higher in Germany even if you take warranty into
account in the comparison.
The 690 was sold in Hamburg, Germany, for app. $700. I paid $460 when
purchasing it from a mailorder dealer.

Oliver

Hey Klay - could you please expand on why _not_ normalize? It would seem
like the natural way of expanding dynamic range... Other than that,
what would you suggest?
Also, I would be interested in getting your opinion of the noise reduction
of Cool Edit Pro (since a lot of people are using this).

Folks, Craig, a very good friend of mine bought a Sony 59ESJ in Japan in
Oct. of '96 (which is the Japanese model number equivalent to our 60ES) and has
been so busy at work that he has not been able to use it for more than
three trades during all this time. It's in like new condition and he's
asking $500 for it. I can personally vouch for Craig's integrity, as he

I inquired of my agency here in Vermont.
Coverage available through Inland Marine
Worldwide coverage written on a floater basis.
There is a policy called a 'mono line' coverage.
For about $10,000 in coverage, the premium might be $200-$250
They can cover professional recording gear used for location recording or
film/video sound.
They "don't like band equipment" as it gets left unattended in various
circumstances.
Glad someones thinking about this.
It make possible shared risk of premium equipment...
Which makes possible premium recordings

I would only use auto level controls is necessary for stealthing
purposes as to avoid having to check your deck.

I see no reason in setting your -20db attenuation. An acoustic source
shouldn't be enough to overdrive your mic.
