Is there a place that has a program for making your own DAT J-crads?
If there aren't any programs, what about personal J-Cards?
Thanks

Anyone come up with the analog flips for this DAT show tree'd ?
If so send me a copy or where I may find it on the Net.

I am lucky enough to be in the possession of awesome tapes of the recent
Phish Nassau and Providence run...taped with the same Schoep mic setup
as the NYE Tree I administrated, except for the 4/03 show where there
was equipment probs, and hence have an amazing donated tape from Mike
Schoeps :-)) taped up front using Shoep MK4s... I really would
appreciate someone from the New Years Tree to volunteer to administrate
this one, as I'm going to be doing the String Cheese tour and going to
Jamaica with them, so time constraints are amazing... also, my technical
abiili
ties are limited...
Anyone interested in administrating this latest run, please email me
asap, and we'll get the ball rolling...trust me, if you thought New
Years tapes were good, these are better..true...Also, please remember if
you volunteer, it constitutes a responsibility to oversee the sucker,
and to be available for the next few months...

Simple answer: No. Data is data.
Not-so-simple answer: If the DATs you want to put on CD are recorded at 48
KHz, they'll need to be resampled at 44.1 KHz for CD, and there will be a
big difference in the data that gets recorded to the CD between different
types of sample rate converters. I'm assuming that the CD recorder you'd be
using has one (I think that all Marantz CD-R recorders do, and probably
every stand-alone audio CD-R recorder on the market does as well), and that
its algorythm is probably different from, say, the one on the Zefiro card
(you said you're doing a digital transfer). (The algorythm on Zefiro's ZA2
is also upgradable, should they come up with a better one; might be
something to consider, but it probably won't make a very big difference).
AFAIK, there won't be a noticable difference between any two well-designed
digital format conversion algorythms. Zefiro's is very good, and I have to
assume that the Marantz units are very good, too. As long as you're buying
your equipment from a reputable company like Zefiro, Philips/Marantz or
Pioneer, you probably have _nothing_ to worry about.
I think the gist of your question is whether the computer CD-R makes a
difference by virtue of the fact that it's for a computer. The answer is
no. It's been said that CD-R's recorded at 1X speed (including, of course,
CD-R's recorded on stand-alone units) have more "jitter" than CD-R's
recorded at 2X or higher speed, which might cause audible problems. I kind
of doubt this (Stereophile claims they've heard the difference, but they
seem to claim that everything they test for makes an audible difference).
Still, I haven't heard much testimony from others as to whether this makes
a difference in the real world.
Speaking of the real world, a computer-based CD-R setup will probably cost
you less than one of those Marantz CD-R recorders (I assume they're all pro
units), and they're also a lot more flexible (you can do some fancy digital
editing with the SoundForge XP software that comes with the Zefiro card,
for instance). "Mastering" to a computer from a DAT, deciding where the
start-ID's should go, then burning to a CD can be a real pain in the a*s;
it really does make me appreciate the relative simplicity of simply
pressing "record" on my DATs. :) OTOH, you can also burn multiple CDs of a
show in relatively short order for the band and your friends; once you've
got your disc(s) "mastered", recording is simpler, easier and cheaper than
recording DAT to DAT. Not to mention, everyone's got a CD player.

I'm fascinated by the idea of killing a person by means of a wrist-watch
battery.
I chose an alkaline watch battery with a capacity of 80 mA.
While I'm still connected to my ohm-meter I'm currently trying to lower
the resistance between my arms by eating huge amounts of salted peanuts.
In case I should disappear from the digest, you will be my witnesses
that I have furnished to proof the possibillity of this manner of death.
The experiment will have a remarkable impact on the sales of Japanese
battery powered wrist watches as well as on the sales of swiss made
watch spring driven clockworks.
I should be very much obliged to you for suggestions leading to a =
succesful conclusion of this research work.

I recently rec'd a pristine 8 Dec 62 DAT of Lester Flatt and Ernest Scruggs
at Carnegie Hall. It's so clear and crisp, that it just couldn't be an AUD
tape as the label indicates. I mean, it sounds legit. Regardless of
that--does any of you expert archivists know if this is an authorized
recording? Perhaps on Smithsonian Folkways or something like that? If
there is any info floating around about this absolutely perfect 35-year old
tape, please email. Just that I hate to trade it as a boot if it's a
commercial release. Thanks,

For current to be lethal, you have to approach 500mA. This will stop your
heart. However, a current of 80mA will cause muscle paralysis not to mention
extereme pain. My suggestion, get a bigger battery.

Hi
I plann on taping the Sonic Youth show on 4/24 in Northhampton(anyone
else here either maybe we could meet up). I wanted to know what there
taping situation is like. How hard is it to get a taping pass from the
soundman and when is the best time to get one. also are there alot of
other tapers at thier shows and what is the general taping climate. I
also plan to video tape so if anyone has done that at a SY show before,
your input would also be helpful.

To All...
I am planning on going to this wonderful festival on the first weekend of
May. MMW, WSP, Ben Folds, SCI, Steve Earle, Ziggy Marley, Ronnie Earl and
many more will be on hand, and of course I would love to tape whatever I
can. However, on the festival's info page, it says that no PROFESSIONAL
taping equip. will be allowed, along w/ no backpacks, no pro cameras, etc.
Are DATs considered professional taping equipment? Has anynone else heard
what the taping policy will be? I assume taper friendly bands like WSP,
MMW, etc. would allow it, but who knows. Any help would be great...

I recently bought a used Tascam DA-30 (note this is not a DA-30 mkII)

things, could you email me and let me know about some of the features.
Specifically, I'd like to find out about SCMS and whether or not it is
defeatable. I was recording a show to a D8 a couple days ago and I got
a cannot copy message on the D8. Also, I have been using 90m and 60m
DATs with it so far and have had no problems. If you could let me know
what your experience with different kinds of tapes has been that would
be great too. Basically any information at all would help me out.

As do electronic stores. As far as the Radio Shack headphone volume
($5)control being used as an attenuator. Sure it could. Basically it is a
passive preamplifier(passive meaning when its at its max, its not providing
any amplification --IE at its max it is unity gain). I can't comment on
the transparency though. While the headphone volume control will work as
an attenuator, there are better, cleaner ways to do this for reasonable $$.
I'd recommend a fixed value attenuator/attenuators......Pete

They are ASSHOLES is they catch you. When we were busted taping in 96,
we were at the Fairgrounds taping the allmans when a bunch of dumbass
kids climbed one of the PA stacks at midfield, namely the one from which
we were taping. So, when security showed up and saw our stand, they
rushed us and threw equipment tot he ground. They treated us like
criminals. Despite the actual LAW, we were booted and our tapes (only
the analogs!!!) were broken in front of our faces.
Please be careful. Those meat head bouncers arent worth the hassle
