I don't need super hi-quality like you'd probably get with DSM-6x mics,
but looking at sound pro's comparision chart with other mics by
coresound, oade, and other mic manufactures, they appear to be pretty
good for the price.
specifically, I'm gonna be using the mics at venues like yoshi's and
Khumba jazz center. Will I be happy with the recording results?

I'm not sure how well Radio Shack's headphone volume control will work as
an attenuator. In addition to its (possible/probable depending on how hard
core an audiophile one is)lack of transparency, the channels are probably
not that well matched (but for all practical purposes matched well enough).
Its probably not very robust and designed for lower voltages than
professional SBDs output. Has anyone ever used this to attenuate "hot"
SBDs when going into a D7/8/100/M1? Comments(I'm curious how well/if it
works)? Thanks......Pete

Subject: a story about D>A>D
Date: Tue, 7 Apr 1998 12:51:34 +0000
Many DAT-Heads are concerned about running their dats through a D>A>D
process in order to change levels, balance, or EQ. We are not
talking about an "A"nalog generation here -- the music is never
recorded on analog tape, just processed in the analog domain.
I continue to see messages asking for *someone else* to process their
tape, which may need just a minor level correction.
True, computers do offer *extreme precision* in making changes, but
they are also time consuming. Something like the Ultracurve or
Finalizer would do these things digitally in realtime, but not
everyone owns one.
But it's just plain not neccessary. Here is a little story.
My friend designs THX and audiophile speakers for Snell, Mirage, and
now, Revel. These speaker systems cost up to $20,000. He
demos the speakers at tradeshows (in private hotel rooms, not the
noisy main floor) with CD tracks which he copies to CDR. (He listens
to hundreds of CDs just looking for tracks that sound good on his
speakers). Since he doesn't usually play the whole track, he needs
to fade each track in and out, when going CD>CDR.
We were recently discussing a new CD recorder. The Marantz have a
good, smooth fade, with adjustable duration, but the Pioneer models
don't - their fader is coree with only about 7 steps. (also
non-adjustable)
Realizing that this person's current CD recorder - an older Marantz
CDR-610 -- didn't have a fader at all, I asked him how he did the
fades.
Very simple, he uses the analog inputs. In order to get good fades,
he runs the entire track through D>A>D. And he says, very simply,
"You can't hear the difference."
Keep in mind this person is not only an audio scientist, but also a
crucial listener, who would not compromise the sound.
Back to us DAT-Heads: the tapes we make to do not have the ultimate
fidelity to begin with, either in terms of frequency response or
signal-to-noise. Perhaps some tapes made with very good preamps in
quiet rooms where the audience was silent, would have good S/N, but
most audience tapes and all soundboard tapes have noise already.
YOU CAN BRING OUT THE VOCAL, and the guitar, and help
eliminate the "distant room sound," just by turning up the upper-mids
(2K,4K,8K) on an inexpensive graphic equalizer.
YOU CAN repair many problems by "Mono-ing" the tape. You can do this
with a "Y" cable from Radio Shack. You can hook-up several Y cables
in a way that you could switch from mono (or one channel), back to
stereo, while the tape is running.
You can repair loads of errors by changing the volume or balance -
either one setting for the entire tape, or more likely, several
changes to "fix" volume changes you made during the taping (jot down
A-Times, and rehearse... it's not that hard to do).
Bottom line is this:
DO YOU WANT PURE DIGITAL SOUND?
OR MUSIC THAT SOUNDS GOOD?
I recently received a tree tape, where the music started at one
volume, and then changed to another volume after the first
song. How easy it would have been for someone at the top of
the tree to fix this. Now, instead of one tape with a volume
problem, we have 50... and if we don't correct those, everyone
who listens to the tape, will have to correct the volume in
playback every time they play it.

Subject: D7 problem with 32 kHz-recording
Date: Tue, 07 Apr 1998 19:28:42 +0200
Hello Everyone !
I am having problems with my Sony D7:
It records fine in SP-mode (44,1 and 48 kHz) but when I do an
analog-recording with 32 kHz (LP-mode) it seems to loose the (self-)
recorded track on the tape from time to time.
That means one can hear really bad digitizing/aliasing-noises like
whisteling or so.
The problem gets worse approaching the end of tapes. I tried cleaning
the head and using
tapes from different manufacturers and different tape-lengths but it
didnīt help.
Eventhough a tape recorded on the D7 with 32 kHz plays fine on any other
(stationery)DAT-deck !
Is it the transport-mechanism ?
Thanks for any help Lars.

Hi,
I have a package deal which would be ideal for a newbie and/or unidecker:
Sony D7
Sony RMD3K digital I/O box
Core Sound 7pin to 7pin digital cable
I'm asking $499 for the whole package. I only want to sell it as a package
deal. The D7 works great and loves 3hr tapes. The RMD3K is like new, as is
the Core Sound cable. I selling these because I want to upgrade to a pro
portable.

Subject: DAT life extended!

Seems the story in USNWR (the one about short life of DAT & CD) was
somewhat bogus. Here is a letter in the 4/13/98 USNWR:
>>>>
_Data Storage_
In "Whoops, There Goes Another CD-ROM" [February 16], you published a
chart credited to the National Media Laboratory showing the life
expectancy of various storage media. As the data preservation scientist
for NML, I want to make it very clear that this chart is not endorsed by
the National Media Laboratory. Contrary to the information published in
your article, NML research shows that when properly cared for, magnetic
tape can last for 20 to 30 years, and optical media can last for several
decades. It is most unfortunate that you published such inaccurate data
and created unnecessary confusion and anxiety for media users and
manufacturers alike.
John Van Bogart, Ph.D.
Data Preservation Scientist
National Media Laboratory
St. Paul, Minn.
>>>>
So this is good news indeed! The only thing I don't like is that he
says "tape can last for 20 to 30 years" and "optical media ... for
several decades". umm.. isn't 20 to 30 years the same as several decades?
Strange I would have thought optical media would be good for much longer
than mag. tape.

I just read that a 90 minute solo Ben Harper from 4/6/98 will

I heard that this was an unbelievable solo performance, and
would really appreciate somebody taping this for me. I do have
some goodies to offer in return, even if you are not into Ben.
Thanks,

I have a DA-P1 and the process is that you insert a new tape and than hit
rewind. It should than move as far as it can to the start of the tape AND
stop the motors. Next you hit the Record button, etc. and if it is a brand
new unformated tape it will show Frmt. on the display and than put down
the ABS signal. If you don't do this it will not record ABS time....unless
the tape already has been formated prior to this use (once done on a new
tape you don't have to do it again).
Before assuming that your deck isn't working right (motor should
stop)...what type of tapes are you using. Some tapes such as non audio
tapes have a leader at the front of the deck and probably would do exactly
as you are stating. In that case you would hit stop as you are doing and
than go through the format sequence....once the tape gets to real tape it
will initialize the format.
If you have audio tapes and are getting this though it sounds like you
might have a glitch in your deck.

Basically, I am looking for a SMALL stereo MIC,

I tried a mic (forget name) with MD portable recorder in

I don't need to have a pro ear to detect.

Any recommendations for a portable DAT recorder which will be used
primarily for doing sound effects design for video games - ie sampling lots
of gunshots and big doors closing and traffic noise etc etc etc ??? Preamp
most often will be a Martech Mss10.
Secondarily, we'll be using it when necessary to make copies and backups
from/to a Panasonic SV3800.

Try doing it with salt water on your fingers. Then try making slight
