From: Craig Hogan <chogan@primenet.com> Subject: The most bootlegged bands Date: Wed, 8 Apr 1998 09:52:59 -0700 (MST) Here, http://zoonation.com/news/u2booted_DM.html You will find a list of the most bootlegged bands in Britain. What I found interesting is that not only do they say that bootlegs "are starving the industry of funds", but they go so far as to say that the money obtained from their sale is actually USED TO KILL PEOPLE. They say "very often the profits fall into the hands of organised criminals or paramilitary groups operating in Northern Ireland who use them to finance their campaigns of violence". Wow. My friend Steve and I made just such a system available on the web last year. So those of you who have visited in the past should come back and see what we've been up to lately. As always, you can find Steve and Scott's Internet Tape Labeler at: http://www.gsia.cmu.edu/andrew/hsm/label/ hope you like it! scott | H. From: "L. Sean Kennedy" <liam@bbnplanet.com> Subject: missing digests Date: Wed, 8 Apr 1998 17:50:51 -0400 I just came across a note saying that some people (and the web archives) did not get digest 138,141, and 147. I only keep archives of a certain number of digests, so it was too late for 138/141. However, I did find 147, and sent that along to Jon Corbet's address which should automatically place it on the web site. If you do notice missing digests, please check the web page -- if they aren't there contact me or 'postmaster@fedney.near.net' to get them resent. If I had to guess on the cause 138/141 were probably when my workstation was moved to a different lab and experienced (local) network instability for several days. 147 most certainly was due to a diskspace problem (related to another local problem) which I corrected pretty promptly last week. The default algorithm and the dithering involved produce quite good results - really hard to hear the difference beyind the obvious subtle decrease in high-end sparkle. No artifacts than I can detect. I may still experiment with other methods - perhaps letting my outboard convertor (Lucid Tech ADA1000) handle it rather than going 48k all the way into the 'puter. >no. I kind >of doubt this (Stereophile claims they've heard the difference, but they What I've heard about audio CDR burning speeds (second-hand from rec.audio.pro and software mailing lists) is that 1x speed tends to burn the pits a little too deep and over 2x too shallow (this is probably an oversimplification - I'd imagine there could be some hardware variation, at least.) But I always burn at 2x to be safe, and have had no problems with any audio CDR; they play on every standard CD deck I've tried, for instance. No jitter either. From: "Marcus Winfree" <mwinfree@erols.com> Subject: CD-R question Reply-To: <mwinfree@erols.com> Date: Wed, 8 Apr 1998 18:08:54 -0400 A friend of mine without e-mail access asked me to pass along this question. He just bought a Phillips CD-R deck and was having trouble finding inexpensive blanks. After buying the unit, he discovered that it would not record onto blank computer CDs and that the CDs that he needed were $7, and not the $2 computer kind that he bought. Would someone that has experience with these decks recommend a good place to buy blanks in bulk that would be cheaper than the $7 figure he was given? Thanks in advance! From: Jon Weber <74111.1427@compuserve.com> Subject: Will Bernard 4-tet : tapes & tour Date: Wed, 8 Apr 1998 18:12:27 -0400 I have the following recordings of the Will Bernard 4tet available for trades. I will consider any trades, but I am esp. looking for Charlie Hunter, TJ Kirk (Bernard was a member) and Spring 98 Phish. 04.23.97 San Francisco CA, Last Day Saloon (part/60); dsbd 06.06.97 Berkeley CA, Starry Plough (all/90); dsbd 03.31.98 San Francisco CA, Bruno's Cork Club (set 2+p1/90); dsbd 04.06.98 San Francisco CA, Bruno's Cork Club (2 sets/120); dsbd Will Bernard 4tet plays deliciously thick organ jazz with a farflung guitar twist that any fan of MMW, Charlie Hunter or thoughtfully-funky jazz can appreciate. The 4tet's drummer, Scott Amendola, was spotted recently "Phil"-ing out the rhtyhm section with Mr. Lesh's new open-lineup group. Will Bernard 4tet will be in southern california later this month and encourages audience taping and provides soundboard access provided the venue is cool with it. I would be particularly interested to set up trades with anyone taping these upcoming shows. April 13 - Bruno's Cork Club, San Francisco April 14 - San Luis Obispo Brewery April 15 - Brick by Brick, San Diego April 16 - Luna Park, Hollywood April 18 - Ground Zero, USC April 19 - McCabe's, Santa Monica April 24 - Harlow's, Sacramento Enjoy and thanks for the bw. I think that's really more a matter of how many beers you spill on the respective types of media. Tapes tend to gum up considerably when doused with lager and laboratory tests show that ale and stout can actually cause tapes to cower, whimpering, in their storage cases. Optical media, on the other hand, lap up the booze but are subject to fits of despair when presented with inhalants and other intoxicants. No problem, though -- just bake 'em. From: nickh@wordcraft.co.uk (Nick Hickman) Subject: "Y" cable mono-ing Date: Thu, 9 Apr 1998 00:47:21 +0100 Gary Davis wrote: >YOU CAN repair many problems by "Mono-ing" the tape. You can do this >with a "Y" cable from Radio Shack. In the majority of cases, this is a bad idea as it causes each output to directly drive the other output which often constitutes a lower impedance than can comfortably be handled. This can result in excess current being drawn and can run into current limiting and attendant distortion. Some consumer gear has its outputs padded sufficiently to withstand this abuse, but pro gear will have a typical output impedance of 100 ohms, or often much lower. If you must passively mix two outputs to mono, at least add resistors in each leg (say 2K ohm) before Y-ing. Don't try this prior to a long cable run, though, or you'll find you've made a nice low-pass filter with the cable capacitance <g>. Nick

From: ONelson807 <ONelson807@aol.com> Subject: Not really relevant, but.... Date: Wed, 8 Apr 1998 21:57:20 EDT ....I think it's a good taping story. Received from a friend who lives in Bangkok: ===== And so I was off on my first taping trip. Less than 20 kilometers away was a house warming of sorts filled with some of my new friends playing Thai traditional music in a new fusion jam style and monks chanting and drooling betel nut out of the place. Yes, only twenty kilometers away, but being as how I am on the outskirts of BKK, those twenty Km took me right out of it. Into the bayou. Yes. Into the bayou, a swampy mangrove that was a bit dry because this is the dry season in a drought year where the little boy has been wreaking havoc. We drove through a one-street wooden shop front business district and then halfanhour further into the twists and turns and potholes of a road that ended in the river somewhere not too far from the ocean. The next few kilometers were on a meter wide concrete sidewalk raised two feet above the mush. Crazy motorcycles played with our lives. Tereza clung to her mother, who clung to the stranger twisting his bike through right-angle turns. I had the basket, filled with diapers, cotten, bottles and my deck. We were accelerating down a short straight away with a second motorcycle parked on the side, and the basket was sticking out a little and then it was flying away, ripped from my grasp, with a terrible clash of metal. Luckily, nothing went into the musty water. All fell on a huge red ant mound, where I also went to retrieve and be tortored. I gathered it all and swallowed my tears. Got back on the back of the cycle, flew above the swamp, then walked the last few hundered meters on wooden planks to my friend's house. There I tested my walkman and it still worked. When I got home later that afternoon I found the mics on the chair where I had left them. ===== Damn, wanted to hear that one! Oh well, desire is suffering. Olaf
