From: Paul Rafanello <intone@warwick.net> Subject: Reverb Date: Wed, 08 Apr 1998 23:12:37 -0400 HBO's "Reverb" was one of my favorite series on HBO last summer. It's returning, and here's the latest info from www.rockontv.com. Set yer decks! REVERB, a weekly series spotlighting some of music's hottest artists, will launch its second season on Sunday, April 26 (11:00 p.m. -midnight ET) on HBO2, the network's second multichannel feed. Slated for 13 hour-long editions, with other new episodes debuting on subsequent Sundays at 11:00 p.m., each show captures three to five different artists in high-energy live club performances, interspersed with interviews and backstage footage. The series has been shooting on location in music clubs on the east coast since the start of the year and will continue production through the spring. REVERB can also be seen Friday late nights on the main HBO channel beginning May 15. Kicking off Reverb's second season will be The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Smash Mouth and Save Ferris. Other episodes will feature Bad Religion, Civ, Paula Cole, Kacy Crowley, Alana Davis, The Devlins, Pete Droge, Francis Dunnery, G. Love and Special Sauce, David Garza, Gaunt, Goldfinger, Ben Harper, Mary Lou Lord, Lotion, David Poe, Steve Poltz, Spring Heeled Jack, Chris Stills, Sugar Ray, Todd Thibaud, Third Eye Blind, Jen Trynin and Chris Whitley, with others to be announced. From: "Gary Davis" <gdavis@loop.com> Subject: CDR Questions Answered and Cool Edit / CDR tricks Date: Wed, 8 Apr 1998 21:19:06 +0000 There are easier ways to solve some CDR problems: > After I dump the show to my hard drive (In 1 large file) I use Cool Edit Pro > http://www.syntrillium.com/ to touch up the recording (if necessary) and > figure out where the track breaks should be. > > By zooming, and playing the soundfile from particualr locations with the > handly movable start-pointers in Cool Edit I point to the start of the track > (down to the thousandth of a second) and then convert the time into frames > (75ths of a second) > > for example if we had a break at just over 1 minute and 23 seconds: > > 01:23:456 > > (which is displayed in large letters at the bottom of Cool Edit Pro when I > point to a location of the file) > > I convert the sub-seconds to CD "Frames" by multipliying by 75 > > .456 * 75 = 34.2 which rounds to 34 frames You actually don't need a calculator for this, you just need to change Cool Edit to display time in 75ths of a second. With Cool Edit 96, the procedure is: Options>Settings>General type "75" into the box for "Custom Time Code Display (Frames/Second)" then, select: View>Display Time Format>Custom You only have to do this once, and Cool Edit will stay in this mode forever. You can then read the exact time in Mins:Secs:75ths on the lower right of the screen. Hint: I find most CD players are a little "late" when going to indexes, and you should set the index about 5 - 75th's less than where you really want the track to start. > Subject: Recording DAT straight to CDR? > > Does anyone know of software that can record DAT output straight to CDR > without making a hard disk file first? > > I have a Zefiro Acoustics ZA-2 linked to my Tascam DA30mkII by AES-EBU. >My CDR is the Ricoh MP6201S, and I'm running Windows 95. > >Also, is there any way to cause the Start IDs on the DAT to create >corresponding tracks on the CDR? It is extremely easy to copy a DAT directly to disc, and convert start_ID's directly to CD tracks. Unfortunately, you have the wrong platform. DAT>CD copying is most easily done with a Stand-Alone Audio CD Recorder, such as the Pioneers that I like, or the low-cost new Philips CDR 670 which will soon be in every discount store in the nation. I'm not sure why you can't go directly from audio to CDR with a computer, but I have a feeling it's because of the underrun risk. Question to software writers: has anyone even tried this? > > I've just finished cleaning up a two-hour+ concert (cutting out DJ > comments, cross-fading the reel flip, etc) onto two CDRs and it was a > pain with only 6.4 GB to work with. > > First thing is that SoundForge XP (which comes with the ZA2 card) is not > as disk-efficient as the newer full-featured versions. When you load a > file it creates a temp version so you need at least 3x as much disk > space as the file you start with (original, temp and final versions). > Computers are extremely good for this kind of editing, but it can be done with much less disc space, typically, under 1GB. Cool Edit 96 usually needs double the file size (not three times), but in cases of simple changes (NOT editing which changes the length), it can actually re-write only the changed part, so it barely needs more than 1x the file size in these cases. However, the main way to reduce the disc space requirement is to work on the project one track at a time, instead of editing 1-2 hour chunks. The easiest way I know to break a concert into tracks is to use software that will automatically make separate files based on start_ID's. (Otherwise, you will probably need more than 1GB to break up the file...) The software I use for this is Jeff Arnold's (Goldenhawk) Disc At Once. Now you're saying to yourself, but DAO only reads discs, not dats. Well, there is a catch to my method: instead of a digital soundcard, I use the Pioneer Stand-Alone recorder and a $1.29 CDR to move the data from DAT to my computer. Not only does the data come in as one file for each track, but you can re-load any file from the CDR and get exactly the same data (with the same start and end points). Great if you want to go back to the original file. Editing these 50-150MB files is quite a bit easier than handling 1GB at once, particularly if you have several disc partitions. There's one other problem. If you change the length of any file (except the last one), and the track doesn't end in silence, you really should "adjust" (delete more data) the length of the file to get it to a 558 sample boundary. There is no particularly easy way to do this in Cool Edit, but here is one way: After editing your file, take the total length in samples (from the lower middle area of the screen) and punch it into your calculator. Divide by 588. If you have an "Integer" button, punch it, if not, you have to do it manually: lets say the display reads 12345.687, punch in just the 12345 part. Now multiply by 588. This is the "goal length" for your track. Normally, you can delete the extra data (less than a 75th of a second) from the end of the track. I used to do this by trial and error, but here's a semi-automatic way. In Cool Edit, select View>Viewing Range. In the first box, type in the goal length. Hit <tab>, and... In the second box, type in 999999999 (9-9's). Because the viewing range setting starts at "0," you have actually selected the part you want to delete. Now, Double-Click on the middle of the waveform display (to select everything displayed), and push <DEL> to delete it. (NOTE: if you need to delete less than 5 samples, you should select them manually as Cool Edit doesn't display less than 5 samples at once). Here is another trick to save space. Whenever I change a track, I rename it with an "X" at the end. Therefore, any track without an "X" is identical on the original CDR. So, if I need more space to work on another track (temp versions, for example), I can delete any un-X'ed tracks, and reload them later from the original CDR. >>>WOW! Here is a cheap new way to transfer DAT>CDR>Computer<<< If you don't feel up to buying a pro CD Recorder, you could do the same thing with the cheap home Philips and a re-writable disc! The consumer RW disc might cost $25, but if you use the same disc over and over, it's not a big deal. --Gary

Yes, Adaptec's 'Easy CD Creator De-luxe' has a sub-function called 'Spin Doctor' which allows the analog input to the soundcard to be directly streamed and recorded to the CD-R without creating a .wav file on the hard drive. It also has a lot of other 'de-clicking' and editing functions. Most of these are rudimentary and require copying to HDD to 'doctor' the signal anyway. Graham Baker

As with most "fun" things, you should warn: "Kids: Don't try this at home". By drawing arcs from the foil small hot particles can reach the eyes. I know everyone did those funny things, perhaps several years ago. I myself experimented as kid with high voltage from two car inductor coils in antiparallel connection. The first thing was using an old relais but it burned out very fast. Then I made a very simple circuit, charging an 4.7uF capacitor with a diode and resistor direct from the wall socket (here in germany 230V AC) and triggering a Thyristor with a small neon lamp to discharge the capacitor to the car inductor coils. _Very_ impressive but I would not recommend to anyone without experience. We know that many of you tape already and we encourage it! There will be no soundboard feeds allowed at all, but feel free to bring your mics and DATs and cassette recorders. We'll help as much as we can to make Whitley tapes spread. If any of you tape shows or know people who do for bands like Blues Traveller (who like CW), Dave Matthews (who LOVES CW), Medeski Martin & Wood, and other bands, please let them know about Whitley. As I'm sure you know, there is an entire taping community and we want to expose Chris to them becuase the grass roots tapers make the music spread faster than any record company can. Any suggestions or comments, please e-mail us with "Taping" as your subject. Thanks, and feel free to send us copies! -Brandon and Seth Thanks again, David
