SoundForge XP has a similar feature, except that the time is in seconds and
thousandths of seconds. It's functional, but it's a pain to calculate
seconds into minutes--and often I mess up. Usually, I'll make a CD-RW
before I make a CD-R; if I don't make a CD-RW first, I usually end up
regreting it. (Converting the thousandths-of-seconds to the 75-frames
format is relatively brainless.)
Right now I'm only using SForge XP because it was free (with my expensive
ZA2 card :P ). I'll probably get Cool Edit if for no other reasons than I
can't afford the "real" SoundForge, and I can add a noise-reduction plugin
to CEdit relatively inexpensively (?).
Anyway, I can't really change my stance; stand-alone CD-Rs are for people
who want to get a simple job done and have got money to burn. (Unless they
buy the Philips model, with its SCMS, expensive discs and its 44.1 --> 44.1
sample rate conversion; unacceptable for trades.) Computer CD-Rs are for
dedicated hobbyists who (gulp) have money to burn (or act as though they do
<g>), but not as much as the stand-alone disc jockeys <g>.

First, don't type in block capitals. It makes it look as though you're
shouting.
You need a software that records CD-Rs in "Disk At Once", or DAO mode. The
only one I know of is Goldenhawk's CDRWin; not the easiest to use, but a
solid performer, and reasonably priced (IMO). It's at

Subject: Car DAT players
Date: Fri, 10 Apr 1998 00:20:18 EDT
Awhile back there where a few posts asking about DAT players for the car. So i
post this for those who asked and for those who didn't but would like to know.
In the new issue (April 98) of Car Stereo Review (there annual Buyers Guide
issue) while they do not list any *new* decks they do list 3 manufacturer's
who make (or made) em, the back issue it was in and the MRSP price, here goes:
Alpine
5700 DAT player July/August 1988 MRSP $1650.00
www.alpine1.com
Clarion
DAC 2000 DAT player summer 1988 MRSP $1750.00
www.clarionmultimedia.com
Kenwood
KDT-99R DAT tuner summer 1988 MRSP $2000.00
www.kenwoodusa.com
If i remember correctly, all these require an outbaord power amplifier. I also
noticed that some new CD players have a digital output (coax or optical),
mainly for outboard D>A converters or a CD Changer. It's been awhile since
i've been installing, so this might not be new. Don't know how usefull it can
be in a mobile situation, but if your hard pressed for a new car CD player and
you don't have a home deck with digital outs, i guess it's an option.

My personal suggestion in that price range would be a pair of AT813s.
These are very good sounding cardiod mics that run on battery or phantom
power, and cost about $200 each. These have the same elements that are
in the 822, but are more flexible. The only drawback to these mics (which
I think is similar to the other mics you're considering) is the noise
level, with only about 65-70db signal to noise. But IMHO good natural
sound is more important to me than noise level, to a certain point.

My DAT Starting Point page is coming along....
If you haven't visited yet, I welcome you to do
so. It's a low-bandwidth platform to launch out
to the Internet, catered to the DAT-Head (or
aspiring one).
I have the following there:
o DAT J-Card Template (my own -- developed in
MS Word 7.0)
o Links to DAT-heads most recent digests, dynamic
searches for DAT and mic gear for sale as well
as people seeking DAT trades.
o Links to the best fan sites as well as key audio
reference ones.
o My DAT list (with over 100 band URL's and setlist
depositiories)
Check it out and let me know what you think!
I welcome suggestions... :)

The HP DDS drives do not support this type of function. The software
driver would have to be written so as to perform this operation. DDS
drives use an extra layer of Reed-Solomon encoding, the software would
not recognize the encoding on an audio dat tape to properly decode it.
I have heard that Silicon Graphics (SGI) workstations can do this. I
also read on rec.audio.pro some rumor a while back that the Seagate
Scorpion DDS drives would do this, but so far I have heard nothing
tangible on it.
For Pentium machines and PC's, currently the best way to capture (.wav)
data is an S/PDIF card.
