From: "Ross Warren, Jr." <rwarren@i-america.net> Subject: re: Merlefest Taping Policy Date: Sat, 11 Apr 1998 08:48:19 -0400 Bruce, There is NO open taping allowed at Merlefest, and yes, there is a check of all bags/coolers going in. Predominately to catch people taking in alcohol (not allowed - this is a family oriented festival). However, I've seen people with video cameras there and last year, they made the announcement before the Alison Krauss set that people please do not videotape it. Also, of course there are no SBD patches available, but I've heard that everything that has been done at Merlefest does get taped by someone. What they do with this tape I'm not sure. At one time they were selling a videotape (Merlefest/PBS/Wilkes Comm Coll) that lasted about an hour or so and had past performances, plus there were a series of shows on the local PBS stations having some great music. But like I said, there is NO open taping allowed. At least last year and all years previous. So you probably need to figure on going stealth if you want to capture any of this priceless music. Beware the wind situation - it'll screw up your recordings royally. You may want to call them and ask about video - I really don't see why they'd differentiate between video (which with Hi8 and AFM audio can be pretty darn good) and audio taping. I was thinking about tearing down an old VHS camcorder and mounting my D100 inside it and my AT-822 mic on top. One year I used my AT-822 sticking out of a backpack and I was very happy with the resultant sound. Looking at my tickets, they state on the back: Tickets nonrefundable Rain Or Shine At Artists request please no video, audio recording, flash photography. Merlefest will make reasonable accommodations for persons with disabilities. In accepting this ticket you grant permission for publication of any photos or video in which you appear. Good luck, Ross Warren, Jr. rwarren@i-america.net infinite diversity, infinite combinations

From: Jim <khrushchev@geocities.com> Subject: D8 for sale Date: Sat, 11 Apr 1998 09:42:36 -0400 After lying around collecting dust for months, it's time this D8 had a new owner. Like new, hardly used (I only recorded about five tapes with this machine) and works great. Asking $450 firm, includes everything that came in the box (machine, AC adaptor, manual, leather cover, and cleaning DAT), along with four blanks (60m DDS, two are relabeled Maxwells, other two are Sony). NYC area buyer preferred for simplicity's sake. If interested, email me at the address above. -J
From: "John Blackmore" <blackmor@iconn.net> Subject: Who's got last night's Leftovers? Date: Sat, 11 Apr 1998 10:57:27 -0400 I just went to see Leftover Salmon last night (4/10) at the Irving Plaza in NYC. They played one long set followed by 3 encores (?). What a show! If any of you tapers came out with a good clean recording, I'd love to set up a trade/B&P for it. Thanks. -John
From: AlchemyADG <AlchemyADG@aol.com> Subject: Ben Harper - SBD! Date: Sat, 11 Apr 1998 10:20:12 EDT Still looking for Ben Harper soundboards! I have 2/3/96 - Fox Theater - Boulder, CO. (127 min) perfect sbd. (not the 90min circulated FM broadcast) I have the Lagoon Park show, but am interested in anything else. I am only looking for other sbds right now. I know there's a couple out there! I will get back to everyone else after these other sbds re-surface. Thanks for your response and your patience. Peace. --Bryan.
From: "Brian Price" <price.brian@virgin.net> Subject: No A-Time Date: Sat, 11 Apr 1998 15:23:27 +0100 I know this has been posted to the list before, nut I never read too much on the answers. I just got a tape in a trade that displays no A-time. The music and start ID are there but no A-time is present. Does anyone know what gives, and will, if I clone a tape, the A time then be present? Hope some of you can help me. From: MemphisKat <MemphisKat@aol.com> Subject: CDRs Date: Sat, 11 Apr 1998 11:46:24 EDT Hello Just to put my two cents in.. I've made around 12 CDRs with the Phillips 870 by using the drawer pull out method with no problems. Although I do worry about the OPC function not being done on the disc I'm actually recording on, I havn't had a problem yet. I also wonder about the fact that it does resampling even when going 44.1 in. I have been going ... Sony D8 digital out -> Audio Alchemy DDEv1.1 DAC -> Yamaha EQ -> Sony A7 analog in to get optimal levels, resample to 44.1, and to add a touch of EQ; personally I find almost all tapes can use a little EQ to optimize their sound. I've had great results so far. I would like to find a digital box to do the EQ and level setting (a limiter would be nice too as a lot of tapes have drum hits that are WAY above everthing else in the mix) in the digital domain but havn't had any luck finding anything in a rational price range (I know about the Finalizer II, and it looks like it would everything I need, but its $3000) Anyone know of anything else? I can't use my computer, I would need a new hard drive and digi i/o card among other things. Also, can anyone recomend a place to get comp CDRs cheap? I've heard they can be bought in bulk for $1. Karl

From: CosmicKC <CosmicKC@aol.com> Subject: Analog deck and Mic's for sale Date: Sat, 11 Apr 1998 12:55:03 EDT Sorry for the lack of DAT content. I have a Marantz PMD 430 portable analog cassette deck I would like to sell. It is a three head deck with dolby B and DBX. It has pitch and Bias controls, it is fully portable, MPX filter, left and right VU meters, etc. I also have a carrying case and a AC power adaptor for it. I bought the unit, used, back in May of 1995 to tape Dead shows. I went to Deer Creek that year and taped my first show. Subsequently Jerry died and I was done taping. In 1996 I taped a local band with it 5 times and then went to DAT. This is a good deck and it had been professionally worked on right before I purchased it. The belts had been replaced and it was professionally cleaned. I would like to get $250.00 for it or best offer. I also have a pair of Radio Shack Electret Unidirectional Condenser Microphones. These have XLR connectors and operate on a standard "AA" battery. I bought these NEW on 3-23-96. I used them 5 times. I know these mic's are not the greatest in the world, but I hate the thought of them sitting around doing nothing. I paid $99.95 a piece for them. If someone out there would like to buy these I would like to get $60.00 a piece for them or best offer. These are in their original box and all the info is with them. I will pay shipping. If interested please Email me at: CosmicKC@aol.com or feel free to give me a call at (630)-302-3372. Again I am sorry for the lack of DAT content. Kelly L. Casey

From: Gary Gilliland <PAGILLIL@ECUVM.CIS.ECU.EDU> Subject: Re: Editing Spoken Word Date: Sat, 11 Apr 98 23:13:16 EDT Tom Kwai Lam asked about editing interviews. Of all the things you can use, from DAWs to razor blades and tape, nothing beats MD in my experience, and I've been doing it for quite a while. The Sony JE-510 is under US$300 many places; Montgomery Ward! even had them for $199.9x for a while. With spoken word source material, ATRAC (the MD data compression scheme) improves intelligibility and diminishes noise. The editing precision of the JE-510, 11.3mS, is just about ideal, and the audition capability makes placing -- and moving -- a cinch. The music will lose something with MD, but unless your are supporting your inter- views with a lot more than the rest of us ever use, that won't make any difference either. A lot of broadcast is using MD for their on-air programs and spots. Some for the on-air music as well. Go to SoundForge if you will, but it will be like digging a posthole with a teaspoon. Hope this helps. Gary
