There is a shareware program for this made by the same people who came
up with layer 3 technology, Fraunhofer. It's 16 bit unfortunately.
Anyway you can download it at
http://www.layer3.org/software/encoders.html#l3enc. I wouldn't be
surprised if they also make a 32 bit decoder (they do make a 32 bit
encoder) but it will probably cost you... the encoder retails for $386.

Hello there,
Just saw that Ziggy Marley & the MM's played the House Of Blues here in LA on
April 7 - 8. Anybody happen to tape this? I would love to get a clone. Have a
few nice Ziggy tapes and many others to offer.
on a related note:
The JGB band and Jazz is Dead will be playing the HOB in LA on April 24-25.
Will taping be openly allowed at this show? I would like to hook up with any
tapers planning on attending. Please email me if you plan to go. I am a
stealth taper with Sonic Studios and a D7, So open taping shows are quite rare
for me. Any idea how the sets will be set up, time wise? Any board access?
Any info is greatly appreciated
Thanks,

I think I may have my second bad unlabeled DAT, but I'm not sure since I
don't have any experience with this. The tape will be playing fine then
diginoise will kick in, but then if I go back and play over the same
spot the DN may or may not still be there, I think this is what called
travelling DN? Is this the tape shedding and clogging my heads, or could
it be something else. I only have a D8 so I can't monitor the error
count. This came from the same batch of unlabeled tapes I got which also
had another bad tape in it(my parent on a tree said he cloned it twice
and checked everything but there were still errors everywhere). I'm
finally starting to realize why some people stay away from unlabeled
tapes, I don't think I'll waste my money on them anymore(now if I can
only overcome my 90M adiction ;-) Secondly, I'm planning on ordering a
bunch of the new Sony DG-60/90P's since they are so inexpensive. I've
used them before and haven't encountered any loading problems like the
Terrapin page says are common. What do people generally think about the
quality of the tape? I haven't had any problems with the handful I've
used FWIW, but I'd like to hear about someone's experience with them who
has sampled a larger batch.

I had the pleasure of seeing the ex-SUPERTRAMP maestro last night at the Galaxy Theatre in Orange County, CA.
For those LA Folks who missed it, ITS NOT TOO LATE, he is playing at HOUSE OF BLUES (LA) on Wednesday, April 15, 1998. This is part of a fairly extensive tour. For complete dates and some reviews, see below.
Unfortunately, the deck I was using (borrowed D8..thanks anyway Paul) decided to snarl my brand new KAO gold 60m about half way thru the show (I didn't notice til end tho)
Anyway, the point of this message is two-fold ("plug and plea", so to speak):
1) The show was simply AMAZING. This is his first time playing live in 15 years, he's doing a truly "one man" show and his voice sounds perfect. He plays 90 percent Supertramp, including a # of favs (Logical Song, Long Way Home, Give A Little Bit, School) but ALSO a great # of "one track deeper" vocal gems (Hide in Your Shell, Two of Us, Easy Does It->Sister Moonshine, Lord is it Mine, Even in the Quietest Moments) As such, I highly recommend you see him on this tour. You WILL NOT be disappointed. (btw, anyone who saw the "Supertramp" show that toured last year, you will FINALLY get that fix you yearned for and never received) This is the PURE stuff...
2) If you DO go, be sure to tape (btw, he played approx 1:45 last nite) and PLEASE drop me a line as I went away empty handed (except for the perma-grin) last night and would greatly appreciate the favor (I also have quite a bit of supertramp aud/vid to trade) Of course, if you happened to tape LAST NIGHT (or can get it), the name of my first born child may be yours...

I noticed this list isn't only for technical DAT-stuff, so I decided I might
as well ask you:
Does any of you have the following shows and would you like to trade for
CD-R's or just tapes?
Counting Crows at Pinkpop, The Netherlands : 5/19/97
Counting Crows in Birmingham, december 1997
Anyone have any good Dog's Eye View recordings or Andrew Dorff?

How much money do you have to spend on mics? That will largely determine
what kinds of mics you get. :)
For $250, the basic Core Sounds binaural (with battery box) works fine for
me. The sound is usually transparent. Of course, it also picks up the heavy
bass at concerts when there's a lot of bass (like I said, it's usually
transparent :). Some people don't like this; for this, they have a
switchable "bass roll-off" option. Core is supposed to have an even more
transparent pair for about $1000 (for that price, they'd better be! <G>).
I've only stealthed twice (and the first was of a band that allowed taping
at a venue that didn't), but the basic Cores aren't really ideal for it.
The $1000 Cores are supposed to be smaller, and I think the Sonic Studios
are supposed to be close to ideal. Core also sells a "Stealth" mic set, but
it doesn't spec out as nicely as their "binaural" set. (Then again, most
concerts that are stealthed don't have good sonics anyway.) Most of the
"concerts" I go to are cheap or free, at coffeehouses, and of small local
bands that either merely allow or actually encourage taping. A few of them
allow me to tape them as long as I agree not to make copies for others
(though I've almost always given the band a courtesy copy).
Core offers a free DAT or MD copy of recordings made by their mics. Last I
did it, I had to send them a blank DAT, and Len sent me back the tape.
Since then, they've added selections, and I don't know if you still have to
send them a DAT (I'm assuming you do). As with any demo, remember that
they're probably going to use the best-quality source material they can
find. IMO, the best way to evaluate a mic is to actually go out and
experiment with it in the types of situations you're going to record in.

Besides quickly and easily splitting large .wav files into smaller
CD-sector-sized chunks, cdwav claims to read and write DAO-format cue
sheets.
It has a nice cheap-n-cheerful graphical interface. You can just drag
the cursor across the waveform display and fast-play through the .wav,
quickly zooming in on the sections of interest.
I don't know CoolEdit, but cdwav is a lot faster than searching through
the file in SoundForge XP.

I have no connection with cdwav other than as a user.
I have not tested the cue-sheet features.
I'd like to know if they really work.

I fully understand and reccomend the use of 60 sec. of blank tape at the
beginning of each tape. My question is... how to do this? On my Sony R300
whenever I try to engage record pause at 1:00 the tape auto rewinds to
the beginning of the tape. At that point I end up having to record mute
to the 1:00 point, thereby upsetting the order of start ID's. Any ideas
or suggestions...? Am I just being stupid and not doing this correctly?

Did anyone else hear the story on NPR a few months back about the kids
in
some midwest or southern town who stole something like a gallon of
mercury
from an abandoned factory?? They played with it, took it to school,
split
it up and gave it away to friends...
The end result was that something like 10 houses of the boys had to be
condemned, and there was an outbreak of mercury poisening in the town
(obviously).
To top it off (and to define stupidity), the boy with the worst
poisening
(and I don't even know if he lived) was one who had the bright idea of
dipping the tip of his cigarette in mercury and smoking it. Needless to
say that he immediatly doubled over and started coughing up blood.
Who needs those stupid chemistry classes anyway...

Did something similar with a giant cow thermometer that I secretly crushed
inside a paper towel. Carried the blob of mercury around with me for days.
I don't THINK it affected me...

Howdy-

We just started selling Fuji DDS DATs. Primarily because until recently the
Fuji DDS tapes were too expensive. Nobody is willing to spend $6 for a DAT
tape these days. Now that they are priced competitively with Maxell, KAO
and Sony they are a more realistic option for us price sensitive DAT-Heads.
As the word spreads on the lower price available on these fine DAT tapes I
imagine we will start to sell quite a few. As of right now it is like a well kept
secret on how great and relatively inexpensive these Fuji tapes are.
Some of my oldest DAT recordings (1991-2) are on either TDK, Panasonic,
Sony and Fuji's. The Panasonic and TDK DAT's failed miserably, but the Sony's
and the Fuji's still perform flawlessly. And where the old Sony tape was/is great,
and the shells kinda sketchy, the Fuji's have great tape and excellent shells.
I highly recommend these tapes now that the price is in the $4 range.
