I'm looking for a copy of the 8/1/73 show for my supervisor and friend. He said it was one of the best shows he's ever seen and looking at the setlist it doesn't surprise me! Dark Star-->El Paso-->Eyes-->Dew!! Wow! If anyone has a copy, preferably soundboard, high-quality audience if necessary. Please contact me. Plenty to trade. Thanks! Greg
From: Connelly Martin <ConnellyM@logica.com> Subject: Philips CD-R listening tests Date: Tue, 14 Apr 1998 15:21:00 +0100 Robbie Dunn <goheels@mindspring.com> wrote about his listening tests of CDs recorded on the Philips CD-R - presumably the 870. >The first test I did was using the 48k DAT of the SCI show <snip> I discovered the DAT still sounded a bit better. <snip> >so I decided to try cloning a CD for my next test. <snip> I still found the original CD to sound a little better than the one I recorded. I know some people's views of hi-fi journalists and jitter, but....... Here in the UK the CDR870 was launched around Christmas to mixed reviews in the hi-fi press. "Hi-Fi News and Record Review" and "Hi-Fi Choice" gave unenthusiastic subjective reviews, and showed high measurements of jitter from CD-Rs recorded on this machine. More recently HFNRR gave the Pioneer CD-Rs a much better review. Hi-Fi Choice reports this month that Philips have (already!!) announced a replacement for the 870 (the 880) in which the jitter problems have reportedly been fixed. A cheaper model without sample rate conversion and a double deck have also been announced. Martin
From: "Vic" <vjd3@tampabay.rr.com> Subject: leather case for D8 Date: Tue, 14 Apr 1998 10:50:04 -0400 Folks: The leather "case" for my D8 walked away somehow last weekend ... if anyone has an extra or leftover from a cannibalized or wornout D7 or D8, I'd love to hear from you. Alternatively, anyone know the part # or cost for a new one from Sony? Vic
From: DeMatt Harkins <dharkins@tra.net> Subject: Bluegrass All Star Help Date: Tue, 14 Apr 1998 09:13:19 -0600 Could somebody who was on the B. Fleck/S. Bush/J. Douglas tree help me out with the date, venue, and mic set-up. Thanks very much. Ol Diz
From: Russ Perry <russndeb@erols.com> Subject: Organizing a Merlefest presence (long) Reply-To: russndeb@erols.com Date: Tue, 14 Apr 1998 11:26:01 -0400 Yee-haw! Yessiree folks, the annual bluegrass rite of passage is drawing near. Merlefest, the festival which kicks off the bluegrass calendar, is only a couple of weekends away, and I'm beginning my preparations for the event. Some of you may recall my posts concerning this festival over the past two years. I plan on attending "all ten days" of the festival again (you newcomers just wait, and you'll understand that statement!), and I'm running into a major problem. There are simply too many great events going on! There is absolutely no way I'll be able to catch all the good sound waves which will be produced on all those stages. For this reason, I am looking to my "virtual community" for help! Anyone interested in working with me to ensure that someone in our community gets to see all the events that MUST be attended should contact me as soon as possible. Between us I think we can get to see all this stuff...For my part, I can offer a couple of things to get this started. I will provide: 1) Some helpful hints and strategies based on my previous experiences at Merlefest, and 2) An "Entertainment Guide" which lists practically EVERY act on EVERY stage for EVERY day on a single (legal unfortunately) sheet of paper. One quick look at that list really puts things in perspective, since you can quickly see the conflicts. I would like to get a dicussion group together on this topic. Please send me an e-mail with your name and primary musical interests (i.e. I HAVE to see the Friday Grisman & Rice Tone Poems set on the Americana Stage, or I want to see EVERY Leftover Salmon show, or I like TRADITIONAL bluegrass best of all) and we'll get this thing kicked off! I am of the opinion that we work out a meeting place on Thursday evening, since the other stages are dark on Thursday, and we won't yet have to assign any responsibilities to individuals. If you don't plan to arrive until Friday (or even later), let me know and I'll be sure to include you! I will send out the first correspondence e-mail to the assembled e-mail list on Thursday, so let me know if you are in! Thanks for the BW, and see you there! -Russ russndeb@erols.com

From: Bob Ramstad <rramstad@alum.mit.edu> Subject: DSD hackers, anyone? Date: Tue, 14 Apr 1998 13:30:54 -0400 (EDT) howdy folks. as you might recall i was one of the people involved with the DSD design way back when. i've been out of touch with the list for a while now and was wondering if anyone had added any cool hacks to the DSD... at various points i was talking with people who were thinking about adding D>A capability and adding the ability to send signals to and from their computer. did anything come of these efforts? anyone else out there have cool mods for the DSD? please note that i haven't had any PCBs or other parts or kits for sale for some time now, so inquiries along those lines will most likely not be answered. if the status changes, this list will be the first to know! thanks much... -- Bob Ramstad 339 NW 54th St Seattle WA 98107-3555 206 297 1081 rramstad // alum / mit / edu replace double slash with "at" symbol singles with dots

From: Chris Reed <creed@multigen.com> Subject: stealthing Date: Tue, 14 Apr 1998 13:31:11 -0700 I just got my sound pro's and did some testing. They sound pretty good. But I'm gonna be taking them tomorrow night (wed) to an indoor venue (undisclosed;) for jazz music. What settings are best for my d100? Should I use the AGC, mic limiter, or manual? And should I record at 0dB or 20dB--0 seems to be the loudest when I was testing. What's a safe setting for the line-in volume if I do manual. This is my first time so I don't want to have to fumble around with my dat (if I can help it) while the show is going on. -Chris creed@cats.ucsc.edu

From: "david louis" <david.louis@giggly.demon.co.uk> Subject: re: blank tape's after recording Date: Tue, 14 Apr 1998 23:23:02 +0100 yes, i found this quite a lot on my D7, first make sure the tape is taught by pulling back the cover & tightning the tape if ness. then pay a bit of the tape (if it's been recorded on befor) to make sure the absolute time if ticking by / sound coming out. If this works the tapes fed OK, if not eject & use a cable tie to gently remove the tangled tape! also i'm in the middle of making an SCMS stripper based on the crystal chipset- email me for the circuit. The band, which features David Torn and Chris Botti as well as Bill Bruford and Tony Levin, played two 50min sets and the tape come out amazing. I recorded the show centerstage about 20' below the overhead stacks using Sennheiser MKE2 RD's (these are the reduced sensitivity version) with a D7. From: "Tony Antoniou" <larz@cyberdude.com> Subject: Age old question (but important) Reply-To: <larz@cyberdude.com> Date: Wed, 15 Apr 1998 11:26:20 +1000 I've been discussing with Len at Core Sound about changing my order from Binaurals to Cardioids considering the amount of crowd/audience noise that you get during the gigs from people standing closest to you. Rather than telling them to shut up, I figured the Cardioids would be a better approach but I need to hear from other people, who have actually used them, what they think of the 2 kinds of mics and if maybe I could do better with something from AKG or Audio Technica perhaps. All opinions welcome. Adios, LarZ =========================== TAMA = The Strongest Name in rums ---------------------------
From: CLARKDA@NKU.EDU Subject: Little Schoeps or big Schoeps? Date: Tue, 14 Apr 1998 21:43:55 -0400 (EDT) Hey all, Can anyone here comment on the differences in quality between using the full-size Schoeps (say the CMC bodies and the MK-4 cap's) and using the miniature version (the CCM series)? It seems to me that if they're equal, you might as well go for the little guys so you can turn out a killer stealth recording if need be. At any rate, I'm looking for a serious answer from somebody who knows what they're talking about as opposed to brash speculation from you-know-who. --Dan
