Hey all,
I want to get an adapter so that I can go from a soundboard with XLR
outs to my D7. What adapters do I need? Does Radio Shack carry them?
Part number? Do they make XLR->RCA or XLR->1/8 inch single adapters? Any
help would be appreciated.
Thanks,

After 2 months of construction and testing our
studio is now set up and ready for business. I have
been buying CDR's in bulk trying to reduce over
head costs so I can sell CD's at a very low price.
We are currently set up to ==>
1) CD ====> CD (CD Copying)
2) Tape ==> CD (74 minutes per CD)
3) DAT ===> CD (No sound quality lost)
Pricing information
CD==>CD Tape==>CD Dat==>CD
== $8 $10 $10 (Per CD)

I apologize for the price changes but our overhead costs
have gone up recently and we were beginning to fall into
red ink.

Subject: Out of alignment?
Date: Tue, 14 Apr 1998 19:51:04 -0700
My problems with my D8 just won't go away. I bought it brand new 7
months ago. I am now noticing that practically every clone I have plays
with intermitent travelling DN everywhere, these are all clones that use
to play perfectly fine months ago. At first I though it was a bunch of
bad tapes from the same batch of unlabeled tapes I bought at one time
but my D8 is playing all different kinds of tapes from different sources
with DN everywhere intermitently. But, every master I've
made(30-something) plays perfectly fine. This leads me to believe my
deck had gone out of alignment and can only play tapes it made, but what
contradicts this is that it can play (w/o DN) a master I made just a
month after I got the deck new. I'm really having a hard time
pinpointing what the problem is. I really don't think(I sure as hell
hope not) that dozens of tapes in my collection have gone bad over a
period of 1-6 months. It is possible for my deck to be of alignment
already? I admit that I rarely use the proper length tapes, but still 7
months seems like a short amount of time to me. Do any D8 owners have
any experience with this sort of problem?

Although I echo your enthusiasm about Mac stuff, I'm a teeny-weeny bit
embarrassed to admit it....this would place me side by side with someone who's
got a very tough time writing ONE coherent sentence. Reading your posting, I
kinda felt like I was inside your head, and it was a pretty claustrophobic

While I run my digital studio on a Macintosh, I can say that I have heard
some really good recordings that were processed on Windows platforms.
The truth (as usual) is that it's much more what you do with the
equipment/software than what you own (stupid songs from RENT
notwithstanding).
On the other hand, I use a Mac for a reason -- I find the software (I use
ProTools, Peak, SoundDesigner, Sound Edit, and Deck for audio processing)
to be more intuitive, more powerful, more flexible, and more professional
than the software I've used on Windows machines (including CoolEdit).
On the third hand, the Mac stuff costs tons more, crashes all the damn
time, and is susceptible to the whims and questionable business strategies
of Steve Jobs, et al.

Hello!
A few people have asked about the 1/8th inch mini connector on the
Zefiro InBox 20bit A/D... The primary reason we went with the mini
rather than a normal RCA was durability (anyone who has seen the InBox
can testify that it would probably withstand world war III)... and it
just happened that both Mike Denecke and myself have had some bad experiences
with PCB mount RCA jacks... I know the 1/8th inch stereo plugs common
on the portable DAT decks have given many of you headaches, but so far
the mono-mini seems to be very reliable (Mike uses them on many of
his timecode products). To respond to Kelly's question, your local
Radio Shack has a metal 1/8th to RCA female adapter for $1.89 or you
can get a 6ft cable that goes 1/8th to RCA male for $2.59... both seem
to work fine.

Dear friends...
I am exploring a few options i have before deciding on what to do. I am
looking for input and any source of information on CD-R's out there. From
what i have beena able to gather, stand alone's are alot more expensive, but
computer versions are a lot cheaper...can you elaborate on how much easier and
how much more compicated one than the other is? I also heard that consumer
units maybe around hundred bucks and pro units are around 15 or 16 hundred is
that about fair? Also the big difference is the price of the blanks, pro
units around 2.50 and consumer blanks around 8? I think in the big picture
the pro deck would eventually pay for itself, around 125 blanks later...not
bad...anyway, any direction or info would be killer....
thanks...

Subject: A/V Certified Hard Drives?
Date: Wed, 15 Apr 1998 07:45:09 GMT
Hey Now,
Anyone know of a good choice(inexpensive) for a drive that is either
A/V certified or suitable for HD recording to & from DAT & CDR? I'm
looking for something that's large enough for a 48khz 90 meter tape.
It doesn't have to be much larger because I'm going to dedicate it to
this purpose. I particularly want to avoid thermal recalibrations. I
would prefer it to be EIDE. I'm also wondering if one drive in the
system is an A/V drive for HD recording, what will happen if the other
drive recals while I'm recording to or from the A/V drive? I have a
ZA2 on the way. :-)
TIA.

Unfortunately, due to the complete lack of blank tapes, I cannot trade

> I've been discussing with Len at Core Sound about changing my order from
> Binaurals to Cardioids considering the amount of crowd/audience noise that
The only way to answer this question is to buy both sets and try them
out for 30 days. Len will graciously take one set back (probably not
both!) and refund the extra money. Borrow an extra portable dat from
a friend. Mount both sets of mics as close together as possible.
Record various types of shows on both mics at once. Try to "sync up"
the DAT machines on playback when you get home, and A/B (compare) the
tapes. Tell us what you decide!
There is another way to do this with just one DAT recorder. Len does
not like this technique because you lose the stereo and the
"binaural" image. But you can rewire the mics so that one of the
CSB's is recorded on the left channel, and one of the CSC's on the
right. Just make sure you've got the right channel of the mics "out"
and the unused side put away...
P.s. for extra credit, EQ both tapes to make them sound
their best *before* you compare them!
