Well I don't know what Morcheeba's taping policy is, I do know that the
amazing opening act, Jim White, will definitely let you tape from the
board or with mics. So tape him. And maybe if you're hooked up to the
board already.....
Please contact me if you tape any Jim White shows. He knows me so feel
free to use my name if he's wondering who's behind it all....;)

HI,
I am a beginner to dat taping, and I'm looking for some advice on which mics i
should buy...Here is my dillema...I am really short on cash, so I cannot
afford to get really good ones or a preamp, mixer, etc. I've been thinking
about either AKG C100s's or maybe a set of core sound binaurals, I've heard
the akg's are good, but I figured that if I can find a place where I can set
up a stand, then I will probably be able to get a patch from some one else to
my d8. Plus, I dont know how they will sound running directly into the deck
(without any preamp). On the other hand I don't know if binaurals sound good
at all, I've never heard a tape from them...If I did get them, I dont know
whether to get the ones with the battery box or not, and what exactly is bass
roll off.
Sorry to repeat the same questions everyone has, but I'm eager to start
taping some stuff...By the way If anyone is going to Monkeys on Extacy or Moe.
this week e-mail me (thurs, fri. mon).

Hey,
Sorry to take up bandwidth but I used to have the e-mail of a person who
was going to be taping (or knew of somebody else taping) Tony Levin and
Bill Bruford (Upper Extremities) in New York. I forgot your name too so if
you could e-mail me, PLEAAAAASE!!!!! It would make my day! :) I have
King Crimson and other various shows to trade.
Also, did you or somebody manage to get Robert Fripp and Projekt2 or
whatever his side act is called.
Peace,
Brian
PS Attention all UK fans! I read from my self-subscribed Marillion Freaks
mailing list that UK are getting back together. It will be John Wetton,
Bruford, Eddie Jobson, Steve Hackett!!!, and some other keyboard player
(apparently Allan Holdsworth isn't coming back). I'm gonna search the web
for more official info on it, but man what an event that would be!!!! :)

Dear DAThead friends,
I am listening to a pretty spiffy Loudon Wainwright III DAUD here 4.4.98
Seattle. About 12 minutes into the set, he suddenly says, "Excuse me what
IS that you have there in your lap? (nervous laughter from the audience)
Could you turn it OFF please? Thanks. (more nervous twittering) [under
his breath] And I want $500 dollars for that tape..."
I think stealthers should stop concealing the deck in the FRONT of their
trousers. Stop using reel-to-reel equipment for stealthing, and definitely
leave the Telefunkens at home!
No doubt a very embarassed patron. And the tapir who was making the DAT I
am listening to probably broke a sweat.
...It's a great DAT anyway...

Hi,
1. I am looking for somebody that knows the curve of DAT Emphasis
(frequency response in KHz/slope points in dBs). I have posted the
question for weeks now to several major DAT manufacturers. I got
answers anywhere from "good luck in findings the answer" to "We do not
know" to no reply back at all... The closest I got was to find 15/50us
Emphasis in the Fostex specs. However I do not know how to translate
this into Hz and dBs
2. Does anybody out here know if a DAT cassette rewinder exist?
Something like the VHS or Hi8 ones... How about price and where to get
one?
Many Thanks,

Date: Thu, 16 Apr 1998 01:45:12 -0500
I have a friend who has thousands of hours of stuff (radio shows, live
recordings, etc. . . ) on reel-to-reel. Knowing that these tapes are old
and cumbersome to work with, she would like to transfer some/most of the
tapes onto a more "modern" medium. I think digital is the way to go.
Analog cassettes would lose too much, IMO.
Looking at the cost of both the recorder/player and the blank media as well
as sound quality and features, I was wondering what might be best for her
to use:
-DAT offers 2 hours (or even more with 90 meter, not to mention LP mode) as
well as great sound quality.
-MD would seem to offer less expensive player/recorder cost but isn't the
media (per minute cost) more expensive? (A real concern for thousand of
hours.)
-MD does offer the advantage of random access with imperceptible sound
quality loss (certainly acceptable).
What about durability and longevity? Are MD's better/worse/same as DAT
when it comes to data loss and media (and player/recorder) wear and tear?
What other medium am I overlooking that might be an option?
Knowing this is a DAT favoring list, I still ask for honest, impartial
opinions. TIA.

Subject: D7 woes :(
Date: Thu, 16 Apr 1998 01:25:56 -0700 (PDT)
Hi all,
Just got home from a concert and found my D7 didn't actually record
anything at all. I had great levels through the show but when I tried to
unload the tape it stuck and pulled out a bunch. No problem, I thought.
I just wound it back into the shell. But when I put it in my home deck it
showed No absolute code. Nothing on the tape. I slid open the tape shell
and noticed that the very top of the tape is slightly crinkled.
What's going on here? Misloading?
This deck is 3 years old and Only used for live recording. It has less
than 150 hours on it. Theres not even any dust inside. It really puzzles
me.
My question is: What is causing this and who shall I send it to?
This machine has never been in the shop before.
It seems like something is out of alignment but I don't know why there is
nothing on the tape.
I've heard good things about the Oades. Would they be a good place to send
it to? Any ideas on how long it would be down for?
Really a bummer to have a killer 3rd row seat and not have the tape I
thought I was making. :(
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jeff

The Quantum Bigfoot EIDE series is very cost-effective. They are 5.25"
drives so seek time is a bit slower, but it should still be fast enough
if you always defragment the disk before recording.
I'm not familiar with US prices, but I would assume that the 12 (yes,
twelve) GB bigfoot should be just over $200. That will only get you
about 8.4 GB in a 3.5" drive.
Buy some computer shopper magazines and check out the ads for a good
source.

That's 2.1GB, but in all likelihood you'll need more than that if you
plan to do any editing. See my post in digest 169.
> I particularly want to avoid thermal recalibrations.
As far as I can tell, concern over thermal recalibration should be a
thing of the past. The important thing is making the hard-disk cache
big enough.
Someone posted this a while back:
< you can improve the slack in the system by adding the following lines
in
< c:\windows\system.ini (use notepad)
<
< [vcache]
< minfilecache= "X"
< maxfilecache= "X"
<
< where "X" is replaced by one-fourth the number of KILObytes of RAM you
have
< installed -- 16384 for a 64 MB system, 8192 for 32 MB, etc.
< Eight MB should cover almost 50 seconds, which is far more than I had
< to deal with.
With a 50 second RAM buffer, a few msec of thermal recalibration time is
nothing.
This has stopped my system from burning coasters (at least so far).
I have a 6.4 GB bigfoot and a 2x CD writer.
Good Luck,
Mark

Sorry to waste space here with this, but my wife is going to kill me if I
don't sell this soon.
Purchased a brand new Casio QV-300 digital camera in February of this year. I
paid $499.95 for it. It stores 64 images at 640X480 24-bit color or 192
images at 320X240 24-bit color. Comes with cable to hook directly to a
television and to download to a PC. Also has several software titles.
Everything is complete and I have only taken a few pictures with it. I was
asking $350 but will take $300 if someone out there is interested. (Must sell
soon, reason for the low price.)
You can email me at CosmicKC@aol.com if interested or need more info.

Subject: D-5 problem??
Date: Thu, 16 Apr 1998 09:20:29 -0400
Hey,
I'm just passing thru the 1st year with my D-5 and I think I'm having a
problem. I could use some help in sorting it all....
Here in Florida I was hoping that it "might" be the dew level as opposed to
the machine having a problem but...
Seems the D-5 has become very touchy about the tape it will play/record.
And when it won't play a tape that never had a problem with before I check
the heads to confirm and yes, I'm getting errors 9 on both channels.
And after making a tape (recording) I go to check it back on the D-5 which
is the machine I made it on. Though it will show A-time it will not play or
show any audio levels. And it had while making the recording and listening
to it during record.
I could use some help, please. Might this be a dew level??
Or something else?
It was pretty humid here a week or two ago and it's just not hot enough to
turn on the A.C. yet.
Any suggestions?
Should I send it in for a check up? I can't believe it needs one so soon.
Later,
Jay
