Todd, =
I read about this in the dat-heads faq. A german professor for =
electronics who was a reliable source of information said that he had =
called Teac to ask them for a firmware update chip. He assured them at
the phone that he would be able to pull out the old chip and insert the
new one without damaging the recorder. I guess Teac wants to avoid the =
board getting damaged by means of static electricity and therefore =
ususally does not send the chips to end users. =
But the professor got the chip this way. As far as I can recall he's got
it for free. But I'm not sure.
I can't help you any further because I don't have such a recorder.

Hi All,
I am wondering if anyone in the SF southbay area
is planning to record the psychedelic music festival
called Terrastock West? It is being broadcast on KFJC
89.7 all day this Fri/Sat/Sun. Last I heard the radio
station is scrambling to set up the remote broadcast
from the new venue which was changed this week. I would
be interested in trading with anyone who may get any of
this on tape. URL for the radio station is below and has a link to the Terrastock website & list of bands...

connections between ADAT or IEC (SPDIF) compatible systems.
Price is $199.

I am downsizing the number of DAT machines I own....
For sale: ONE (1) professional Panasonic 3700 DAT Player/Recorder.
The Deck is in excellent shape and has had preventive maintenance
twice (cleaning, replacing worn parts, alignment, lubrication...etc)
since I bought it from this rebuilt Transport 3700 from the Oade's
Hi-Fi Sales 15 months ago (worked performed by Plotnick/Pro Digital)...
Furthur, it has had 3 custom modifications performed on it that I consider
are *very* nice/necessary:
1) The Digital I/O selection has been moved to the front panel (with a
toggle switch) - this is so you don't have to screw around with
the backpanel if you change Digital I/O ports
2) There is a known problem w/ 3700 headphone connections...
This has been fixed with this deck
3) Everyone knows that the head hours counter that is on the back
panel is UNREADABLE. An LCD digital timer connection has been
added that is connected to (and is active when the) play button (is
on - which is on both play & record)...Of course, I shall add the
timer itself (its no good to me otherwise) that velcos to the side
of
the box (removable for shipping)...
Doug Oade can verify that these modifications are of
professional quality (aka: done by Josh Belkin).
Of course, I have the manual & the remote control as well!!!
There is ONE (1) problem: The heads need replacement- due to some bad
tapes & one other problems only related to the heads and will NOT
be a problem on a new set of heads (these were *not* new heads
when I bought it 15 months ago).
The GOOD NEWS is that the heads can be replaced and
otherwise the deck is in excellent shape!
Now here is the DEAL:
I don't want to deal w/ paying the Oade's & you paying me...
So, what I want is to get ~$350 out of deal and then you pay
for the head replacement directly with the Oades (which is one
of the best prices I could find): $320 parts, $75 labor!!!
So, your total cost: ~$750, for a practically NEW 3700, with a new
set of heads on it. This is the battle cruiser of DATS, don't hesitate
or it will be gone...before you respond...:-)

By the way, both acts are taper friendly, and you may even be able to get
a soundboard patch! (I know Steve has given them out before at least.
And of anyone taped their recent tour in Europe, I'd be interested in that

Does anyone have any documentation on DDS-2? I've been thinking about the
similarities between audio and computer DATs but since I don't have enough
info I'm a little lost. It seems to me that you should be able to use
UNIX's dd to duplicate tapes, and read them for that matter. Then you can do
what you will with the bits. It also seems that if it were this easy
someone would have done it. Anyone have a clue they can loan me?

Illiteracy aside, there are many of us interested in Mac hardware/software
solutions for digital audio. Which suggests the next generation of I/O,
Firewire. Anyone had a chance to play with this yet? I know Macs already have
the drivers and cards available, and Win 98 is supposed to support this high
speed serial interface as well. There are several digital cameras (still and
video) that support Firewire, and I understand that Firewire will become the
next digital audio transport as well (Stereophile thinks it will link all
components of and audio system). Hopefully Firewire will standardize many of
the interface and cabling problems that digital audio seems to engender.

I might add that Protools (the benchmark if you ask me) on MAC has only
66mhz DSPS (563003 me thinks) while the PC uses 80MHZ this multiplied by
4 (number of DSPS means the PC platform has 320mps VS mack 264 = more
horsepower/plugins. (V8 = 300mps for a comparision)
I would also mention that our company makes a 600mps Dig card w/ 16
AES/EBUs Sony 422/SMPTE / 5 MIDI's.... blaw... blaw... blaw.... This is
a PC card (used in the film industry)!!! I don't know anthing on the mac

Have to check them out...
Cheapest I've seen is at Costco: TDK white-labeled in 20-packs for $40,
with a one-per-customer $20 rebate: $1 per. But obviously limited unless
you get all your Costco-member pals to go buy 'em for you.
Egghead had Ricohs or Traxdatas for $1.50 befoe they decided to close their
physical stores and go all virtual.
Maybe there should be (is?) a CDR-watch page along the lines of the RAM
watch sites...
btw, what do folks think of Cassette House's MasterDAT 10 packs (R124MD)?
Price/quality? Recently got some.

It's not just a matter of how long you've owned the deck, but also how
much it's been used. As an extreme example, I wouldn't be at all surprised
if a D8 used 8 hours a day had problems in less than a year. Consumer
equipment just isn't designed to handle that kind of load. Just because
somebody else got away with it doesn't mean you will.

I read your reply and I would like to tell you that I started doing
digital audio on the pc. I do not think pc are crap but my experince with
them while doing audio work was horrible. I did read articles concerning
audio and NT and they did convince me to give windows a try. I started out
ny installing win nt 4.0 on my K6 233. After having windows crashing three
times before it installed correctly I finally instaled sound forge. Sound
Forge in my opion is a very cool program. Then I went through hell trying
to get my apex audio card to work under bill gates half assed operating
sys. I went through hours of trying to solve irq conflict after irq
conflict then I was greated with a wonderfull dma problem. So the first
few weeks after sarting up my digital nt workstation I truly went through
windows hell! The windows problem that broke my back was after i sloved
all my hardware problems I was doing dat to cd conversion on my pc when NT
crashed again. My client thought that I wasn't professionall enough in my
service and I lossed about three hundred dollars with that crash of
Windows. Because of my bad experince with NT I decided to switch to the
mac. I then decided to purchase a mac 8100 which is the fastest nubus
machine. I decided to purchase this because nubus hardware was dropping
dramasicly in price. I bought an audio medie III card for cheeper than my
apex card. I also picked up a video vision studio basic for 599. Since my
purchase of my mac all my burns have gone without error. I also got this
spiffy contract with bellsouth for their video work. So in my opion the
mac is a more relable work station then the pc but when rhapsody comes out
all things will definatly change. No I'm not in a mac cult, and personally
I think steve jobs is a prick that embessald money from his precious
company apple when atari contracted them to make boards.
take care
