This is incorrect according to my (limited) understanding:
First of all. there are many different kinds of caching. Vcache is a software
disk cache that use an MRU (Most Recently Used) data retrieval scheme.
I believe this type of disk caching does not improve data throughput for
streaming data such as digital audio recording. It helps on reads of data
**ALREADY** stored in the cache (writes are a different story). The idea
being that in normal computer use, much of the same data is accessed
more that once, Ram is immensely faster than disk access. So, the system
places the results of a disk seek into RAM (i.e., the disk cache) The next
time a disk seek is issued, the fast disk cache will be checked first, and
if the data is not found then the slow disk is checked.
I have never heard of Vcache being used as a RAM buffer for streaming data.
In fact, I've always heard that using a disk cache when you have lots of misses
(meaning the data is not found in the cache) can actually hurt performance,
such as is the case with digital audio.
Again there are many kinds of caches, but this is my understanding of Vcache.
If anyone knows this to be incorrect, please let me know.
Peace

One better is CDW. They've got the same TDKs, but they're selling them for
$27.79 per 10-pack. Better still, unlike the Costco $20 rebate coupon which
specifies one pack per address, the CDW rebate is three packs per address.
Short of bulk, I've never seen 78 cent discs anywhere. CDW's number is
800.601.4239 -- item number 106880.

Go to your nearest Golf Shop. They have the coolest little
umbrellas for your golf bag, uh, i mean mic stand, clamps
right on to anything. :-)
I use tent pegs to anchor the feet of the stand. wind usually
accompanies rain. BRING GOOD WINDSCREENS.
I just have one of those (who makes it?) metal breifcases that
keeps the rain off the deck. don't open it without leaning over it
or otherwise covering it.
I keep a piece of a plastic sheet in there to just toss over the
connections.

a tape- swapping project, which is just getting going. "It's a
four- track tape circle," he explains. "There's me and, say, four other
musicians, and all us have four- tracks and we each put a tape in our four-
track and fill up track one with four or five song ideas. Either just drums
alone, or guitar, or singing, or whatever. And then we swap tapes and the
next person would respond to what the other person did."

...it appears that not everyone is just dreaming anout this...it
appears that at least one company, Gallery software, is making a
slightly modified dds drive (with associated software) which also
reads dat audio tapes
http://www.demon.co.uk/gallery/StudioDAT.html
...so you can back up data with the drive and also read the dat audio
data directly enabling you to edit it (eg using soundforge, cooledit,
etc) and then write it back directly to tape...thus, in this case you
don't need a digital audio card...this is a great idea EXCEPT FOR ONE
THING..they ONLY make it for MAC platforms....does anybody know of a
similar device for PC platforms ??...surely there are tons of people
with PC's out there who would like this capability !!

Date: Fri, 17 Apr 1998 15:53:44 EDT
I have a Sony TCD D3 and I want to use power from my car. Can anyone suggest a
small and safe power supply (going from 12V to the required 9V on the side of
the unit)? Sony does sell a car mounting plate/power supply- which I do own
BUT I determined that the power supply inside of the mounting assembly uses
the metal plate and to dissipate heat. So the idea of simply yanking the
circuitry out of the metal plate went into the toilet. Thanks.

Subject says it all. Sorry if this question has already come up I've
been haveing a hard time keeping up with digests. I have just been on
the phone with Kemper Arena staff here in Kansas City. They say there
is no taping section. I don't always beleive what I'm told by venue
staff or by ticket agency customer service agents (I have been mislead,
lied too, and been given erroneos information many times.) This person
did ask other people in the office and basically said flat out no taping
section. They weren't sure if taping would be allowed.
If anyone has any information contrary to this or if someone could
confirm that there will not be a taping section I would be very
grateful.

SPDIF is a true 75 Ohm unbalanced connection. So you need cable rated for
digital use (not radio shack junk RCA's) and RCS connectors on that cable
that are true 75 Ohm as well. This doesn't rule out the use of regular
analog RCA cables in emergencies, the signal will travel on lamp cord if
you want it to.
But, buy the best cable you can and you will save yourself a world of hurt
later when you have higher error rates and such. Check with shops like Oade
Bro's or a one of your local higher end pro-audio suppliers to get the
right cable.

I'm not aware of anything wrong with Sony's 16-bit conversion in the
D7/D8. The SBM-1 adds a "Super Bit Mapping" feature which goes
beyond 16 bit conversion, but the recording is still 16 bits on *any*
