From: "Gary Davis" <gdavis@loop.com> Subject: Tori Amos and loud applause Date: Fri, 17 Apr 1998 18:01:03 +0000 It's unlikely there will be more than minimal security. As to audience, I recommend taping low enough that the audience does NOT go over, then you can correct the tape later in an analog dub with either the volume control, or a good compresser. --G

My experience is the exact opposite, it's the gold discs that don't play on older CD players. However, the KAO gold discs seem to play fine on all CD players -- go figure. --Gary

From: Sewwhat3 <Sewwhat3@aol.com> Subject: Sony D3 analog deck for sale Date: Sat, 18 Apr 1998 08:15:58 EDT Sorry about the lack of DAT content.... A good friend is going to upgrade to DAT and wants to sell his new Sony D3 analog portable recorder. The unit has been used to tape 7 shows and has less than 35 hours of head usage. The deck cost $265 but he will sell it for $200. It comes with a clip-on stealth mic and pair of headphones. Serious inquiries only please. From: Gordon Gullahorn <gordon@cfaspecial.nospam.harvard.edu> Subject: A/V Certified Hard Drives ? Reply-To: ggullahorn@cfa.harvard.edu Date: Sat, 18 Apr 1998 08:25:04 -0400 (EDT) Seems like there's a LOT of confusion on this issue, per the recent discussion (to Vcache or not?). Lots of opinions, not much agreement. Having been contemplating a computer system for several months (and just picked it up last week), I've tried to follow the various threads and postings and also asked around among computer techies I've known. I've gotten almost as many authoritative opinions as opinionators: A long posting a few months ago (or maybe just a pointer I followed) of a tutorial/FAQ by people who sounded like they had lots of practical experience seemed to say that these days it's not really an issue. Aside: Has anyone actually had problems with standard IDE/EIDE/UDMA/UATA drives purchased in the last year or so? Given that A/V drives are hard to locate (poring through a recent Computer Shopper I think I noticed only one outfit selling them, and only one of the catalogs I get offers them, without saying what makes them A/V) and kind of pricey, that'd be very nice. There's general, if not universal, agreement that the issue is the drive's timing-out to do thermal recalibration. Suggestions on what makes a drive A/V with respect to thermal cal have included: -- The drive has firmware built in so that it postpones the thermal cal when it is in the middle of a read. [ Given that our soundfiles may take an hour or more to read, is this a good idea? ] -- The cache on an A/V hard drive (typically 128-512 K) is reprogrammed as a read-ahead buffer. I.e., rather than keeping track of what's recently been read in case you need to access it again, the drive reads ahead of the actual requests for data on the theory that's what you're most likely to want (e.g., if you're reading a long audio file in sequence). [ Thanks to Mark and Steve for bringing up this issue with regard to using vcache and system RAM for caching/buffering. Looking forward to hearing the resolution on this; I've gotta admit I don't really know what vcache does. ] One of those "hardware genius" pages on the web explained A/V drives as involving not thermal recal, but the way data is stored on the platters. Something which didn't make a whole lot of sense to me about storing straight across a platter at a time vs. storing in a cylinder covering several platters before moving in or out vs. a jagged scheme. A computer salesman (motto: "it would hurt my ego to admit I don't know, so I'll make up something") seemed to feel it was just a matter of speed, e.g. udma better than ordinary ide. When pressed on thermal recal, he did come up with a good suggestion that one might want to have the hard drive on and warmed up for a while. So ... does anybody have some hard data on this issue? Such things as articles in refereed journals or PC magazines, or perhaps a manufacturer's web site in which they explain what they have done to make theirs an "A/V certified" drive? Incidentally, why don't CD writers simply have a few seconds of buffer built into them? or for that matter, why doesn't the software we use to write to the CD drive create a buffer using some of that RAM our machines are stuffed with? And is this an issue when writing a tweaked sound file back to DAT?
From: Rob Garland <phishingruven@mindless.com> Subject: Sony PCM-M1 errors Date: Sat, 18 Apr 1998 08:27:26 -0400 Word! My Sony M1 appears to have a problem... when playing tapes the error counter is almost always showing some errors. When I check the tapes in my Sony r300 they are error-free. The severity and how often they show up appears to vary with differing types of tape. The errors are low, usually 01 or 02 but the occasional 10 or even higher does show up. The errors seem highest/most often with Sony data grade (how ironic considering it's a Sony deck), and lowest with KAO Golds. I wasn't able to tell a difference between 90m's and 60m's. Also head B seems to have more errors than head A. The errors aren't constant, they seem to happen every few seconds or so. I ran the cleaning tape before running my tests. The deck is about 2 months old and has ~100 hours on the heads. Any ideas as to what the problem is? I had some financial problems right after I bought the deck and unfortunately was unable to purchase the extended warranty so I am really worried if something is wrong with my heads. There is another problem with the deck... somehow the latch that keeps the deck closed seems to have gotten slightly bent so you have to give the door a little extra pressure to get it to close... should I try bending it back or just leave it how it is and be careful with it? The deck seems to take a really long time loading tapes... any other M1 owners notice this? Is this usual? Thanks a lot in advance for any answers/comments. - Rob Garland PS: Looking for some HQ Pink Floyd DAT's, have plenty of Phish and others to trade. --== DAT list at: http://dat.home.ml.org ==-- "here's to feeling good all the time" - Cosmo Kramer
From: Rob Garland <phishingruven@mindless.com> Subject: Which deck to use for play/record Date: Sat, 18 Apr 1998 08:30:01 -0400 Hi, I own a Sony PCM-M1 and a Sony PCM-R300. I'm wondering which deck should be used for play and which one for record. Currently I am using the r300 for the play deck so that I can error-monitor. Should I switch them around, and if so, why? Is it easier on the portable to play or to record or is there not a difference? - Rob Garland --== DAT list at: http://dat.home.ml.org ==-- "here's to feeling good all the time" - Cosmo Kramer

Date: Sat, 18 Apr 1998 08:38:05 -0400 About one year and a half ago (I think), there was a radio broadcast that had Sarah McLachlan and the Bare Naked Ladies performing some acoustic Christmas numbers. I could really care less about the whole 60 meter 90 meter issue but I need some 60 meters for some trees and stuff. So I was wondering if somebody could help me out. Here's what I would like to do: Trade 5X90m of unopened Sony DG90P for 5XSony DG60P, unopened. or I'll take other types of 60 meter tapes too, unopened. Just email me. The key here is QUICK. I would like to send these out Monday morning. Thanks, Bill Gardner

From: ONelson807 <ONelson807@aol.com> Subject: Bevis Frond: TAPE THEM! Date: Sat, 18 Apr 1998 10:02:36 EDT Taped The Bevis Frond last week, and it was great: Nick Soloman was the friendliest person (not just musician, but human being) I've ever met. Asking for permission, I ended up talking to him and Adrian, the bass player, for quite a while. The show was hot, the crowd cool, the band very accomodating. Tape them, please. You'll be glad you did. I don't have the dates handy for the remainder of the tour, but if you search the archives, someone just posted them here last week. Trades? Olaf

From: William Dennehy <bix1@earthlink.net> Subject: CD-R vs. DAT Reply-To: bix1@earthlink.net Date: Sat, 18 Apr 1998 08:23:11 -0700 Why are CD-R's cheaper than DAT machines? I understand the technology (basically) but since they're both digital why is there such a price differential? Is it because CD's are about 76 min. and DATs are 2 and 3 hours? Forgive the stupid question but I'm new to the whole shebang. Thanks Bill
From: mdask@netgate.net (Marc D) Subject: Bevis Frond FM (Terrastock) / Mike Stern Quartet Date: Sat, 18 Apr 1998 16:03:18 -0700 (PDT) Recorded the Bevis Frond off the radio (FM) last night playing at the Terrastock festival in San Francisco. They played for 75 minutes and were recorded in SP mode. Have been recording most off the other acts in LP mode and have to say they range from good to bad and some are quite weird... About a week ago I had the privilege of seeing and recording Mike Stern at the Catalina bar and Grill in LA for a couple of nights. I was using my Sonics and sat right at the stage about 8 ft in front of Mikes' guitar amps and the tapes came out very nice. He was playing with Dennis Chambers, Lincoln Goines and Bob Malach. Mike put on his usual jaw dropping performance of "bop 'n' roll" but Dennis Chambers was absolutely on fire and nearly stole the show away. If anyone is interested in setting up a trade please email me at marc_daskalovic@ltx.com Marc mdask@netgate.net

From: "Vikas Bhatia" <vikas10@hotmail.com> Subject: Questions about taping+D100 Date: Sat, 18 Apr 1998 12:24:04 PDT Hi everyone. I recorded my first show last night, and now have alot of questions to ask. I'll try to remember as many as possible. Here it goes: 1. I have read many times that the battery life is not very long in the D100. I put the supplied batteries in the D100 about 1.5 hours before the show, and after half an hour of recording, the battery was half dead. Could it just be that they were not fully charged or does the clock actually suck up the juice? 2. While taping, inoticed the levels were peaking at -12, and the rec.level knob was at about 7-8. So i turned the knob up to get the levels around -4 and -2, but the knob was turned to 10, but the levels went no higher than -12. Why is that? 3. I know using the light uses up the battery. What about using the headphones or the remote? 4. Whats the best way to point my MarcSounds mics? I had them clipped to my shirt collar facing down towards the ground. The recording came out exactly like what i was hearing at the show. Bad PA and low vocals. 5. How long has the battery been known to last after a full charge? 6. Should the tape be unpacked in the couple of hours before the show, or right before i'm about to tape? 7. How do most people like to sneak in their gear? Last night was not tough at all because there was no security. But I'm thinking it might be a problem when i go to tape some big bands that don't allow taping. For now, that's all i can think of. Thanks to everyone in advance. Hopefully these questions will lead to better tapes in the future.
