What is the difference between how a Radio engineer and a TV engineer
test their audio circuits?
A radio engineer uses lots of test equipment and time, carefully
checks frequency response, distortion, channel balance, phase, etc.
A TV engineer taps on the mic and says "Hello, can you hear me?"

Hi I have a Reconstruction show on dat that I can't identify. The tape
says Cotati, Ca.
The list is something like:
Make it better>jam>I just wanna stop>jam, strugglin' man, LOVE,?
There is diginoise in the first 2 minutes. If asnyone recognises this
tape, can
id it, or can locate a copy without diginoise problems, please contact
me.

Anyone know what the taping policy of Missing Man Formation or the
Fillmore is? I'm going to the 4/24 show and am wondering which rig
to bring. Since I'm flying there, I don't want to bring two rigs.

Hi everyone,
I have a few more questions to throw out. First of all, I'd like to thank
all of you who helped me out in deciding which set of binaurals to buy. I
ended up ordering a pair of Sound Pros ones. I'm eagerly anticipating their
arrival.
Ok, I saw someone make a post about TDK DDS tapes on sale, at COMPUSA I
believe. They're a fantastic deal (4-90m tapes at 13.99-10.00 rebate=.99
cents apiece. However, all ive heard is how bad they are. What makes them so
terrible? Why would these shed and other DDS tapes not shed? Are TDK Audio
DATs bad too? Does shedding tape hurt my deck, or just leave the tape
unlistenable? Which tapes last the longest?
I appreciate your time. As always thanks a lot

Howdy-
I'm doing my best to obtain reliable information as to what CD players with a digital
out will play the CD-RW that the Philips CDR870 uses. So far I'm limited to my own
personal experience but would be very grateful for any additional feedback.
Sony D-E705 Portable CD player $169
(very cool portable w/ ESP2 20 sec buffer memory, comes with stereo headphones
AC power, connecting cord and carrying case. We have a custom 1/8" > optical out
for $29 that works with this unit)
Sony CDP-XE500 Single well $149
(this very sleek single well deck gives an optical digital out, jog dial search, remote
control with direct access and a VERY handy peak search)
Both of these are available, but are not yet on our web site. As we gather more
information and can offer a few more brands/choices of CD players Am-Dig will have
a separate page with these products.
If anyone out there has any additional info on CD players that can play CD-RW please
send mail to:
cdrw@am-dig.com
Thanks-
Dan

Has anyone experiences using a digital camera (JVC) as DAT. Journalists
seem to tape interviews with them. How is the quality when recording
music ?

Hi All,
SCMS-Editing
Does anyone know of a (PC) software method of editing/removal of SCMS from
tapes during digital I/O for PC editing ?
Such a method would seem to offer a sensible and easy solution and I'm
surprised that programmes like Soundforge (for example) do not provide it.
Furthermore, why can I find no advertisements in SOS magazine (UK) for an
SCMS-Stripper?
Surely these devices exist - somewhere - !

Subject: Mac CD-R labeler/J-card?
Date: Wed, 22 Apr 1998 21:27:21 EDT
I recently got my Philips CDR870 and am about ready to dive in and make CDs
from my DATs, but figured that I'd start fresh and get the labels and J-cards
going right from the beginning. Some time back, I'd made up a J-card
stationery document for my DATs using Clarisworks and putting frames together.
It works great and I just punch in the info from my DATabase to get J-cards,
but since I understand that there are programs around that make nice inserts
for CD-Rs as well as labels for the discs themselves, I thought I'd look into
whether any of our Mac DAT Heads know of any to recommend.
Thanks for any help!

Since many people have responded to my post
admonishing everyone to tape, but none have actually
done said taping, I'll make another attempt. Following
are the remaining dates. Try it, you'll like it. Unless
you're not into music.
4/23: Austin, Electric Lounge
4/24: Houston Mary Jane's
4/25: Memphis Young Ave Deli
4/27: Chapel Hill Lizard and Snake
4/28: Baltimore Fletcher's
4/30: Rochester Bug Jar
5/1: Syracuse Hunger Charlie's?
5/2: NYC Knitting Factory
5/3: New London, CT Taz
5/5: Providence Kentucky Lounge
5/6: Middle East
(If some of these places don't exist, blame the Flydaddy Records guy who wrote
out the dates for me, or blame his
grade school penmanship teacher.)
(Those of you who emailed looking to trade: I'm not ignoring
you. I have to go elsewhere to access web to see your lists.)

Bought a D100 from them two days before Christmas. As it was a gift (to
myself), they went to extreme measures to make sure I got it the next day
(24 December). They actually brought it into town by hand, and didn't even
charge me shipping, since it was personal transport... Best service I have
ever had from a mail-order company.
I have since bought a bunch of blanks from them at really good prices.
Phone Larry at 1-888-USA DATS (1 -888-872-3287). Nice guys, great knowledge,
excellent prices and the best service. I highly recommend this company.
Happy shopping!

I (andyhof) previously stated:
Sennheiser makes a nice expensive model...
with dual-elastic suspension.
Yalk <Yalk@aol.com> replied:
No, they don't-- they just re-distribute Rycone at a higher
price than if you just bought Rycote in the first place.
They redistribute Rycone?
SORRY...Sennheiser does make their own. Read up!
1. They are made in Germany...not Stroud, UK
2. They have 2 suspension bands for each mic clip...not one.
3. Carriage yokes are made of thick, hardened rubber...not aluminium.
4. The zeppelin is black...not grey.
5. They are two completely different products!
I have both the Senn and Rycote for my MKH416....and time
after time, I reach for the Sennheiser. It's elastic suspension is
far superior in suppressing handling noise. Add a fake-fur windjammer
and wind suppression is unbeatable. But as Jean Luc pointed
out....both models are extremely heavy when fully extended to
3.5metres. Try this with the MKH816!
I tend to use the Softie nowadays instead.
I also tend to comment on my experiences with the equipment I
own/use rather than fabricating Sennheiser zeppelin stories! Yalk?

I have transfered MMW-10.5.96-Portchester,NY to 2 cdr's w/some filler
from 10.14.95. da-p1>Za2>SForge>CDwav>Yamaha 4260
This 1 setter is a phat SBD that I aquired from Don Pasewark.
Sounds great, only problems being low volume and 1 glitch about 10
seconds in,(from the sbd,not digi-noise) I also used CDwav for the 1st
time,to split tracks.(real easy to use,but leaves small gaps b-tween
tracks.)
I'M MAKING 3 OFFERS:
1.I have 2 extra cdr sets to trade for one recorded dat,60 or90m,
depending on what I see on your list..
(before I get flamed let me just say,I know cdr's can be bought for as
low as a buck, but I got these from CompUsa for 2.50ea.),& no i'm not
using the rebate..I also bought some 2-cd jewel cases, and will include
inserts w/all pert. info.
2.I'll burn copies for the 1st 3 uni-deckers to reply, you must send me
2 blank cdr's first..
3.Since I have the show on cd, I'd like to trade the original dat, it is
on a 60m Sony audio grade.
Send lists my way, look for more cdr's soon..peace, choey

Subject: Re: Patching from D100/M1 digital output
Date: Thu, 23 Apr 1998 02:41:13 +0000
The M1 and D100 use a lower voltage than the D8. This is not a
"defect" but an "improvement" (in power efficiency).
Therefore, the M1 or D100 cannot directly drive any of the following:
POC-DA12 RMD3K D7 D8.
I have heard they can drive the Tascam DA-20 or Fostex D5 directly,
but have not tried it.

Subject: patching from D100/M1

BTW, I have stated the opinion before that Daisy-Chaining is never
the best option -- you have the "weakest link" syndrome going.
I am sure a D8 could power 2 D100's, or maybe a D8 and a D100, if you
used a "Y" cable on it's output. (Actually, I'm not sure since the
"unapproved" 7>pin coaxial output is not at SP/DIF level. You would
have to try it).
I recommend more people bring "Y" cables to show as well as
patches...then you could "Y" the analog input and do your own A>D
conversion.
--G

Subject: more on Patching
Date: Thu, 23 Apr 1998 02:48:29 +0000
Y-Cables on the analog signal with definately NOT hurt your sound
quality, though if someone on the "Y" were to "unplug" their
mini-plug, it would momentarily short out everyone else on the "Y"
and cause some noise. Other than this situation, I would think you
could split a signal 4, or 5, or more ways with no loss. (Of course
there is some risk of faulty connectors etc).
Another good reason that D100/M1's should be last in a daisy chain
(sorry): their batteries are more likely to run out than a D8.
(Of course by this rule a DA-P1 should be further still...)
