If people weren't having these problems providing patches with their D100/M1 decks then I could see how your argument might carry some weight (because lower power consumption is great, but at the cost of losing flexibility with digital patches?), but with all the reports to the contrary I don't see how you could call it an 'improvement.' - Rob Garland PS: FWIW, my M1 drives my Sony r300 just fine. --== DAT list at: http://dat.home.ml.org ==-- "here's to feeling good all the time" - Cosmo Kramer

Ahh so you think people should use the lower quality A>D converters in their D8's & D7's rather than be able to take advantage of the DAP1's higher quality A>D through a digital patch? Not to mention that often times a high quality external preamp will be in use by the taper, which those who are patched can take advantage of through the digital patch out of the lead deck. I think if people take your advice it will only lead to lower quality tapes circulating in the long run. - Rob Garland --== DAT list at: http://dat.home.ml.org ==-- "here's to feeling good all the time" - Cosmo Kramer

I'm sure dat-heads would appreciate seeing your reply also.>> Sorry. I'll explain. AT has shipped (3) new mics in a new 3000-series of reasonably priced, great sounding mics. The AT3525 is a large-diaphragm cardioid, the AT3527 is a small-diaphragm omni and the AT3528 is a small-diaphragm cardioid. All are 48-volt phantom and can compare favorably to the 4000-series, and are destined to become a dathead staple. All mics include a switchable -10db pad and low-cut filter. I have posted an Acrobat color cutsheet at my ftp site, ftp://ftp.klay.com in the cute little pdf folder; "AT30_Series". Not available at the DAT Store......;-) Regards, Klay Anderson http://www.klay.com 1.800.FOR.KLAY

DATHeads is probably not the proper venue for this discussion and is the reason you didn't amplify on your assertions about wrong normalizing and digitizing noise. Seth, can you suggest some place we can go to discuss this point and several others, like dc-offset, it's cause and cures? Hi Bill and All, I must admit that I really like the R-500 and actually just parted with mine to get an R-700 (absolute overkill for the general tape trading application but it sure sounds like fun). Still, while the R-500 immediately made my list of favorite DAT machines, there are quite a few features that we can do without if we just want to clone tapes (ie. shuttle wheel, balanced in/outs, etc..). With this in mind, I would strongly consider the R-300 (excellent error correction) or DA-20 mk.II. I am finding the R-300 ($599 delivered) to be more tolerant of time without cleaning than the Tascam is, but I really like the way the DA-20II ($750.00) handles start id's and scms. For our complete listing of new and pre-owned DAT machines, microphones, pre-amps, batteries, and lots of accessories, including Rental and demo options for everything we carry, check out the Sonic Sense website at http://www.henge.com/~sncsns We look forward to helping you with all your recording needs. (1) Sony TCD-D7, (1)Sony ECM 737 microphone, (1)Fostex D5 deck I will still throw in 10 dats, either pre-recorded live GD(rare and hq) or blanks, whichever and a Core Sound 7 pin>digital XLR cable for connection to the Fostex(new in july 97). Also, includes analog XLR>RCA cables, both left and right in and out for connection to a consumer stereo. I am willing to split this package up, let me know if you are interested in the package or in individual components.
