Hey everyone,
I purchased a DA-302 recently and have not had a problem up until now.
I loaded a tape, and my machine displays TOP as usual, but it does not
go away, and the machine continues to attempt to load the tape
unsuccessfully. The real problem is that I can't eject the tape. It is
a Maxell tape and I have never had a problem before with this brand.
Does anyone know anything about this and or have a suggestion on how to
cure it? Thanks for the b/w. Later

"Not to mention that often times a high quality external preamp will be in
use by the taper, which
those who are patched can take advantage of through the digital patch
out of the lead deck."
Whether you're getting a digital patch or an analog patch, you are "taking
advantage" of an external preamp (assuming one is being used)in both cases.
There are "exceptions" and certain conditions/situations/settings which
lead to "exceptions" but even those "exceptions" are not true exceptions to
the original quoted passage above (which insinuates that as soon as analog
patch enters the scenario the external preamp in use becomes useless to
that patcher)and still don't nullify (in the case of an analog patch)the
results of a HiQ external preamp. Everytime you get an analog patch from
someone using a "really nice" external preamp, you are getting the "really
nice" benefits of that preamp, however, there are other things (D>A and A>D
first come to mind but there are other factors which depend on the decks in
the chain (and the order)/settings/the fact that unity gain isn't always
10, quality of analog cable, interfaces, etc, etc)which can degrade the
sound/signal. From a purist point of view, digital patching done properly
is the best way to go......Pete

DAT-Heads,
I got a patch at last nights Merl Saunders concert at the Rainforest
Perserve in Utica,NY.Jeff LAzzaro was kind enough to hook me up with a
patch...here is the mic info:
mics:Schoep's MK4/CMC6's
Pre-Amp:Sonosax SX-M2
Deck:Sony D10 Pro(modified)->to my DA-P1
The tape is a little over two hours and I believe needs to be put on a 90m
tape.Unfortunatly, thanks to the Rainforest Perserve, there was a fan blowing
intermitantly at us.This only occurs of and on during the first 15 minutes
or so of the first set,and then again VERY Briefly at the begging of the
second set.The encore was not taped.SORRY!!!!!I will trade this tape to
anyone who has interest in it,and right now I'm pretty much open for
anything in return. If you are interested drop me a line privately. Thanks!!!

PS:I plan to tape the Pat Mcgee Band tomorrow night if anyone has any

As far as I know, there are no sound cards that preserve SCMS (or any other
subcode data). So it is a non-issue. The Zefiro ZA-1 card (the old,
outdated one) lets you choose if you want SCMS on the audio you play out of
it. I choose not.
The primary reason for no subcode data is that there is no standard way to
report this data to audio programs. This means that when you transfer DATs
into a PC you lose all the start-IDs. Also rather annoying if you have an
emphasis-encoded DAT and forget to turn emphasis ON when playing it back out
(the ZA-1 lets you set emphasis On/Off too).

These are illegal in the USA, if their primary purpose is to circumvent SCMS.
Don't know about the U.K. Maybe they are legal in Japan and you can order
one directly from a Japan-based company?

It does not honor Skip IDs but passes then via DIF output to the
receiving deck. End IDs are honored.

What does "Message" function mean?
> stereo 1/4" mic inputs, scms. Seen in Dutch Sony winter 95/96
> catalog. Runs very hot (temperature).
Good news: It senses thin tapes, calculates estimated time correctly,
so I assume that the tape tension is adjusted as well. If the thin tape
hole is covered it runs very hot with thin tapes!
It records time and day on the tape and displays it even during ff/rew.
The deck has a 4 digit error counter for each head. To activate it you
need to drill a hole in the face plate of the remote control to access
the hidden button. Key sequence 9,1,hidden button activates error display.
Hope this helps,
Norbert

<<I also tend to comment on my experiences with the equipment I

Being a Sennheiser dealer for over 25 years, I get to know them pretty well.
Rycote did make their mounts many years ago. I resent the word "fabricating"
and I did post an apology for my error, after I checked it out.
Now, as to experiences, I have used Sennheiser and may other brands of gear in
my over 35 years of audio experience. I have done sound on countless movies,
television shows, 10 years of touring concert sound, studio work encompassing
hundreds of albums and cd's in worldwide release. I have played venues from
small dinner theaters in Nowhere USA to the Hollywood Bowl and all next week I
am back in Hollywood for a show at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. I count
some of the best engineers and artists in the world among my clients and close
and personal friends. I am in the fortunate position of not only *using* this
stuff daily, but I also get to sell it. I offer my experience hoping to pass
on some useful information, as opposed to bozos in cubicles looking at
catalogs. So I was wrong.

I am sorry to say this, but I think prices are going crazy. A Lunatec
two-channel preamp is selling for the price of a PSC M4A+ or a Shure FP-33
mixer! Considering that those are REAL pro mixers (not only preamps), that
they power any microphone type, that they have limiters, bass cuts, pads,
real VU meters, sturdy cases, low consumption, what should be the advantage
of Lunatec or Sonosax preamps? Besides the small size I do not see the point.
On the other side, a recent product being offered on the semi-pro video
market for around $200 is not getting any attention. A two channel mic-box,
passive, transformer balanced in/unbalanced out, with volume pots. Some
even mix the signals. Mic/line switching also. Only lacks phantom supply
and bass-cut, but should interface beautifully with any D7/D8/D100/M1.

Hi DAT-Heads,
Anyone have info./experience re: the quality of Sony 650MB CD-R's (CompUSA#
156450) or Aurora 650MB silver CD-RW's (CompUSA # 185966)? The Aurora
packaging looks particularly cheesy, but it was $20.00 w/a $20.00 rebate. The
Sony's were a 10-pack for $25.00 with, you guessed it, a $25.00 rebate.
I have no other info. on the Sony's because CompUSA sold out before I got
there -- I had to pre-pay for mine. I have no other info. on the Aurora's
because the packaging gives no other info.
Thanks for any insight,
Mtume.

<<How is this an 'improvement' when it goes against an industry standard

The nice thing about standards is that there are so many of them.
Technically, the "industry-standard" IEC (sometimes improperly called SPDIF)
specifications state 0.5vp-p and AES is 0.5-3vp-p so I do not know from your
post if there is a missing decimal. If Sony has elected to use a different
voltage, certainly that screws with things, and this new crap with the D100/M1
only serves to convolute it further. Manufactures are very guilty of non-
conformity.

I am considering the purchase of a pair of Neumann KM140s in the near
future. I have been searching for a good price on the SKM140 set, which
includes the mic bodies, cardioid caps, active cable, mic clips, ORTF bar,
windscreens, and a box. This set seems to run about $2250 from most
vendors here in the US. However, I recently stumbled across a German
vendor, "The Direct Shop", who offers this setup for about $1500 plus $100
shipping:

The Neumanns are listed at:

This deal seems to fall into the "too good to be true" category. Does
anyone have experience with this company? Am I missing something here?
Their page also indicates that:

Is this a concern in the USA and how much will this add to the cost?

Did the D3/D7/D8 have higher or lower voltage than what is standard? (My
