From: Robert Ian Hoffman <rih5@columbia.edu> Subject: Sonic Youth & Busta Rhymes Date: Fri, 24 Apr 1998 15:04:37 -0400 (EDT) Oops, my big apologies to those that were planning on coming Saturday....this concert is going to be held on Sunday. Also, Busta Rhymes is headlining and S.Y. is opening. My guess is that it will start sometime after noon, but before 3:00. It will be at Columbia University in NYC, 116th and Broadway....and ITS FREE. ODHC: So, will my M1 be able to power anyone after me in a Daisy Chain with an Oade Bros. passive 7pin->coax cable?
From: Duc Tran <dtran@xsvr2.cup.hp.com> Subject: who has POC-DA12P Date: Fri, 24 Apr 1998 12:14:24 -0700 I try to get this cable for digital copy to/from my PCM-m1. I can't find any dealer which has this cable. Who has it, anyone in the net has this for sale? Duc

From: "Robert Franklin Gaines, III" <rfg4m@server2.mail.virginia.edu> Subject: Warning: the DAT store Sucks Date: Fri, 24 Apr 1998 15:52:16 -0400 (EDT) To All, Let's begin by an apology for the length of this post. To all those out there who may purchase Digital Equipment in the near future or those who will relate to this, i will give you the lowdown from the beginning. The infamous DAT store is in my opinion totally bunk! It is completely evident to me that they solely care about meeting there sales quotas rather than any care/respect for their customers. Recently, the store had the sales on among other decks the SV-3800. So i e-mail the address they have on the list of vendors. I e-mail Gary Davis. I had called earlier in the day about getting a Sony R-500 for the sale price of $1,004. Well, someone told me that i could have either deck for that price. So i e-mail Gary and begin to set it up with credit card information and $ order info. He e-mails me back the following message: "Brad sort-of said "today only" on that low price on the R500. If you want to email me your credit card, exp date, and billing address tonight, and send the money order ASAP, I think we can handle it." Well, okay then, so I agree to this and got the money order, filled it out, and gave my credit card information for the deal. Yeah, I was getting the deck that i wanted and soon. I had also agreed to purchase another deck from them within a few weeks after this sale. Then, Later the same evening all hell broke loose and I recieve this message: "I really don't think this is going to work... it's the Panasonics they want to sell, there are only two Sony R500's in the store!" Why don't you buy the Panasonic first, and maybe there will be a demo sale on the Sonys in 2 weeks. So they renig on their offer! I had already done the necessary things for the sale and they say no go! This sucks. What kind of business is this. One that make false promises, obviously!! Second of all, i don't want a freaking demo deck or "B" stock deck. So only to not feel totally bitch slapped.. I told them i would take the SV-3800 because i had already done all of the necessary stuff and was eager to get another deck. Well, after receiving the deck, I didn't open it because, i found that a couple of places had the R-500 for $999. Therefore, i called them and told them i was sending the deck back, to which they preceded to tell me they didn't take decks back. I said it was unopened and they were obligated to do so. While on the phone i was spoken to by four different people, each eventually handing my disgust to another employee to try to wear me down or something. Finally, someone gets on the phone and tells me i can have the R-500 for the same price. I think "what the fuck," they ARE only interested in money and sales. By this time i was fed-up with everything and merely told them that i wanted my credit card reimbursed with the full amount of the deck! I send the deck back with a letter stating my specific intentions about having my credit card reimbursed and track it to their store. It arrives Friday April 17th. I call Friday, nothing. I also e-mail Gary Davis on Friday to try to get his help. He preceded to tell me that he didn't work for the DAT store. My question then is why is his e-mail address on the Vendors list web site under the DAT store and why has he been dealing with me as if you did work there? I guess he just does all of there promo work or something. Then I called Monday, nothing. Tuesday... okay we will take care of it...it is in the computer now, nothing. Wednesday, I call and speak to someone who says, "I thought we agreed to send you an R-500 at no extra charge" as if they didn't read my letter at all. Also, since from what i understand they now have or recently had the R-500 for $999, i bet they would send me one for $1,004. I declined in light of their rude and quite poor service that i have encountered with them. Whether my credit card will be credited soon is still in question, though once it is I will be purchasing two decks: R-500 and Tascam DA-302 from another source(s). I guess with a little more politeness and courtesy, the DAT store wouldn't be thought of as a bunch of assholes! This is a warning to everyone, that there are certainly Vendors out there that will treat you with total respect and act as a friend rather than a "fucking prick." I have purchased a lot of equipment over the past year and have made great acquaintances through these transactions. Marc Nutter at Sonic Sense is truly wonderful to deal with as are the Oade Brothers. I have also had great success with Terrapin tapes so far. Therefore, these are among the places that i can personally recommend to all that may purchase equipment soon. I apologize for the lenght of the short story that i wrote, but i feel that it will save some poor souls a lot of hassle in the future. Bottom Line: The DAT store SUCKS!!!!!!!

Is this true? Anyone know >what the deal is? >thanks Kao is a _huge_ company (not that TDK isn't), and a full merger would probably be on the front page of most Business sections, even in the U.S.A. (See their corporate annual report from their homepage at http://www.kao.co.jp; they're sort of like a cross between Proctor & Gamble, BASF and 3M.) Their blank media division seems important to them (though apparently not as important as soap), so spinning off their magnetic media division wouldn't be done lightly. That said, it's possible. Gordon Gullahorn posted that they're stopping production of magnetic media in Massachusetts, but that's to expand production of CD-Rs. (The article he read only mentioned floppies, he said.) They've also got a joint CD-R venture with Ricoh in Spain. (So I guess it's Kao that makes Ricoh CD-Rs, not the other way round. :) I assume they would want to at least continue making floppies (and at least in Japan, if no where else) to have a foothold in the important secorts of the blank media business. And DAT/DDS tapes are also an important sector, though they're also becomming less important. (I'd hate it if Kao stopped making DAT tape; it's my favorite brand.) So, where did you get your information? :) Peace, <> David URL me at http://www.lightlink.com/drogers/ -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- "You can kill a thousand; you can bring an end to life; you cannot kill an idea." --Former Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres on the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin (1922-1995) ================= "Please handle with care especially when serving children." --From Nissin Foods "Cup Noodles" lid

But it was doing the > recycling thing whether or not I touched anything and must have been > doing it for a little while to explain the warmness of the unit. I'm not quite sure what you mean by "recycling," but if you're talking about the machine continuously power cycling (on-off-on-off, etc.) with no way of stopping it short of pulling out the batteries, then I used to have the same problem with my used D8. Somehow, the tape would get jammed in the deck, so the D8 would try to power cycle to hopefully unjam it. It would fail, so it would try to power cycle again. This would go on forever. Since I didn't want to mess with trying to open up the deck myself, I just took it to Sony. They "fixed" it twice by manually taking out the tape and lubricating all the parts. The third time they "fixed" it by replacing the whole transport (this was all under warranty). Needless to say, like all other Sony repairs, it didn't fix the problem, so I eventually strong-armed them into replacing it with a new deck. Haven't had the problem since then. It doesn't seem too far-fetched to assume that there may be one or more unscrupulous postal workers at your particular post office that may be stealing packages and bills (just in case you happened to pay your credit card bill with cash). If this continues, you should talk to your local postmaster and see if other people have been complaining. Maybe they can launch an investigation. You can't really try it before you buy it, because any printed label will have "UNREGISTERED" written across it in huge letters. Kind of defeats the point of evaluating how your labels will look. From: Greg Hanssen <hanssen@netcom.com> Subject: "Industry Standard" S/PDIF Date: Fri, 24 Apr 1998 14:07:20 -0700 (PDT) As Klay pointed out, "Industry Standard" S/PDIF is about 1 volt, not 5 volts like the D3/7/8 and not 3 volts like the D100/M1.. these are proprietary Sony (that's why it's on a funky 7pin connector that nobody else uses).. the idea is you're supposed to buy a Sony cable that converts 7pin to the "Industry Standard". -- Greg Hanssen <greg@zefiro.com> www.zefiro.com (714)-551-5833 --== Zefiro Acoustics: Pro S/PDIF & AES/EBU digital I/O for the PC ==-- Check out the EV1 Electric Car at ev1-club.power.net or www.gmev.com

BUT.... they want $18 bucks for the show. Is this for real? In a town where dead cover bands and tape parties (and jazz bands for that matter) abound, how could they expect to get the bucks for just another cover sort of thing? Wondering... From: "Gary Davis" <gdavis@loop.com> Subject: Re: D100 using lower voltage on Digital I/O Date: Fri, 24 Apr 1998 19:20:23 +0000 SPDIF standard = 0.5V (according to Klay) D8 - TTL level = 5V D100/M1 - 2-3V? So you see, the D100 can still directly drive an SP/DIF port (such as the Tascam DA-20), but not the D8. It is really the D8 that's the culprit in D100>D8 patching. > <<but with all the reports to the contrary I don't see how you could call it > an 'improvement.'>> It's an improvement because the D100 runs off two batteries instead of 4! This is an improvement in both size and weight. Unfortuantely, this also reduces the continuous running time. There are always tradeoffs in designing equipment, but if you consider what the D100 and D8 do, for their size, weight, and especially, power consumption, (and price), they truely are the most efficient top-quality audio recording devices ever invented. --Gary

First of all, you did apologize after checking it out. Admirable...no doubt. But you should have checked it out before telling me that Senneheiser does not make their own shockmount/zeppelin/suspension systems. Also, you did not apologize to me, rather Jean-Luc. You privately e-mailed me (apology) but quoted Jean-Luc's response in your letter. I think you have gotten his reply mixed=in with mine. Jean Luc was explaining the pictures in the catalogues- not I. I don't work in a cubicle. In fact, I don't even have an office. Maybe that fact qualifies me as a bozo! Honestly, I was simply offering my experiences with both Rycote and Sennheiser products...passing on some (hopefully) useful info. You quickly reamed me, without taking the time to check the facts. It was without substantiation. I am truly impressed with the amount of experience you have, and all of the work you have done. But I am equally amazed by the way in which you have conducted yourself in reply. I have done a great deal during my lifetime as an audio engineer/cameraman for film and television, but... this is not the forum.
