The analog will be the output for the sound card (so you can listern to music CD's) Computer based CD-r's don't have any inputs for external sources, you have to send data via it's bus (SCSI / IDE). That means that to get digital audio in to your computer you need to record to hardisk via a digital I/O, generally on a sound card. theres quite a few companys who make digital sound cards if you take a look about. >Hello all. I am looking to get info on cd burners and i/o cards that >I would need if I wanted to go DAT > Cd. Also I have seen CDRw with slow read >speeds, has anybody ever connected a cd-rom, a cd-burner, a 5 and 1/4 floppy >drive and a internal zip drive to a computer yet ? Not quite those disk's, I've two IDE har disk, scsi hard disk, Scsi CD-rom & Scsi CD-r in the same computer with no problem, but you shouldn't have any trouble if your CD-r/Rom are SCSI, IDE *might* cause some headaches. -- Matt Matt@shortsharpshock.demon.co.uk OUT-THERE MiniDisc<-->DAT<-->CD Audio Duplication Http://wWw.shortsharpshock.demon.co.uk/audio/

Tis a shame they couldn't be bothered to make Win95/98 usable out of the box with more than just short snippets of audio, eh? But what do they really care. They have me to help you! With the tweaks at the URL below you can get glichless audio of any duration you want on a 486/100 with 16Mb. I have, back in 1995 when my 3Gb scsi drive was a great deal at only $1100. From: GaoBest@aol.com Subject: hall & oates Date: Mon, 11 Jan 1999 22:39:55 EST hey everyone i'm a bit new to this DATheading, for years i've swapped on analog. now that i finally have a DAT, i'm looking for hall & oates - does anyone here like them? i saw someone mention Chicago, who i have on analog... anyway I'm ISO of Hall & Oates DATs, and i've a lot of analog tapes, plus a few DAT masters from the past month (men at work/howard jones, billy bragg, cardigans, st. etienne, new order, underworld, daniel johnston, davie allen & the arrows) as well as a few D.Clones. also i want to buy a pro-deck to avoid SCMS - Tascam is the obvious and most common name thrown at me, can you recommend other brands? i can't afford to pay a lot of money. i read the FAQ but still feel eerie - maybe you can email me direct, to avoid wasting bandwidth on an obvious question! cheers mike gaobest@aol.com ps - also interested in getting a DAT contact who tapes BBC Radio, for sessions and broadcasts, etc., from Peel, Hobbs, Lamacq, and Breezeblock. Cheers!

From: JWNorris <JWNorris@apc.net> Subject: Protocall when trading CDR's? Date: Mon, 11 Jan 1999 20:23:48 -0800 I have just set up my new computer with a Plextor CDR. But I have a question or 2 involving the trading of CDR's. 1. When converting a DAT to CDR, is done just as a D>D transfer, that is keeping the crows noise and tuning between songs? Or is it preferable to spend the time and edit out all of that extraneous material? 2. What software is everyone using to copy CD>CD. I have CDArchitect and SoundForgeXP, but do not find anything in the manuals. Thanks in advance for all assistance. From: Eric Angel <ejangel@ucdavis.edu> Subject: Does ZA2 work w/ Win98? Date: Mon, 11 Jan 1999 21:06:43 -0800 Yes, I use a ZA2 with Win98 on my comp. I've only had one problem with it, but it's probably not related to Win98. Sometimes if I start recording in Sound Forge XP before I hit play on my D8 I'll get an error message that basically says it can't open the device(or something like that), then I have to reboot my computer and it works fine. Does anyone know how to fix this problem, is it related to buffer size? Also, the person I bought the ZA2 from reccomended increasing the buffer size, but I haven't bothered to figure out how to do it. Anyone know how? (The reasons have to do with retrofitting it into the codes that were already written on CDs; the first bit means "copyright asserted", the second is 1 for "master" and 0 for "later generation".) From: Andrew Gustin <gustin@leland.Stanford.EDU> Subject: AES/EBU <-> S/PDIF clarification needed Date: Tue, 12 Jan 1999 00:46:19 -0800 Hey folks, I have a Tascam DA 20 with SPDIF coaxial/rca jacks and I've been trying to figure out how that limits me in terms of buying a second deck. I've read the FAQ section that relates to this, and I still am confused. Or, I need to know whether or not the DA 20 is "smart enough" to recognize an AES/EBU signal and handle the voltage or could I damage my unit. Specifically, I am looking at whether I could get a Fostex D5 as a second deck and how I might be constrained. I'd be cloning with a DA 20. Which direction should the cloning go? I would think it would be DA 20 -> D5 based on what I read in the FAQ about the two digital standards, one consumer (SPDIF) and one pro (AES/EBU). But do I need a special conversion cable, or do I just connect both of them with either an AES.EBU or an SPDIF cable? Which one? Thanks for the help folks. I'll probably just end up getting a second DA 20--I love how the unit has treated me so far! It's like a tank, so solidly built and all. But I wanted to weigh my options completely, and I figured I could learn some valuable stuff about these standards. Peace Andy

From: "Ross Warren, Jr." <rwarren@i-america.net> Subject: re: Tape shipping and repacking question Date: Tue, 12 Jan 1999 06:21:21 -0500 I found out the hard way that YES tapes sent though the mail should be repacked, but even more important, open the tape cover by hand (slide your finger on the tabs and gently pull up the cover, not touching the tape) and then use your little finger or a pen to move the take up spool, so that any slack tape is taken up.... I didn't do this once, and I ended up having to send my DTC-790 off to get the jammed tape out of it.....this happened on a Maxell HS/4 60 meter...I love these tapes...but the sleeves are very slick (good for you machine's motors and the life of the tape), but because of this slickness, it has a tendency to cause slack tape if they've been jostled around much (like through the post office).
