By my calculation, "KKoenig" is looking to collect $4.33 per tape, hardly enough to cover the cost of a blank tape. At such a low price, it hardly even matters *what* is recorded on the tapes. The sound of the ocean is worth $4.33 per tape (provided the tapes are one-pass KAO 60-meter :) However, when someone tacks on a premium to the price of a blank tape (perhaps in the name of recouping their equipment investment, or passing along the cost of their show tickets) then this practice will bring upon them the wrath of the trading community. I don't specifically remember the details of Lou's offer (which brought him so much flack) but so long as the price attached to the offer did not exceed $5.00 per tape, then i take the position that the flames he received were not warranted. When the price per tape is at-or-below the fair market value of blank tapes, then the offer shall fall under the category of a simple "B&P", and no foul play shall be called. -bebop ~~~~~~~~~~ Those of us who aren't artists must color things the way they really are or people might think we're stupid. -Jules Pfeiffer

It was a head clog. Head clogs happen. Can be due to contaminated tapes (if you touch the tape surface with your fingers) - happened when my kid brother with peanut butter fingers did it. Can happen with the tape gets stuck in the mechanism, as there is a lot of grease in the mechanics. Normally the grease stays in the mechanics, and does not get on the tape, but if there is tape slack due to a fault... it can pick up grease. It can just happen with cheap tapes which shed oxide. It can even happen with cheap tapes where the adhesive between transparent leader and real tape (TOP) sticks to the heads. Or sometimes, it just happens. What Edwin saw was a totally clogged head, which of course cannot read anything. This would cause a complete blank tape syndrome. As he played the tape, due to head/tape friction, whatever gunk on the heads gradually wore off, and got re-deposited on the tape. So, as the contamination gets less, you begin to get some signal, hence from blank to diginoise. After long enough, most of the gunk is clear (to the point you can read about 50-60% of the bits). At that point, the error correction can correct fully and you have perfect sound. You still wouldn't be able to record, as the gunk will prevent proper laydown of new material, and your old material will punch through sometimes, giving new music/old music fade ins and outs.. Every time I get a clog, which is often enough, I do a wet clean. I found if you don't wet clean, the heads re-clog easier, whereas a fully clean one seldom clogs. There you have it. Alex By the way, an old head that is worn clogs a lot easier than a new one. This is because of old heads exert less pressure on the tape surface after being worn say 30 microns or so.

Yes, my mistake. I never saw those links. There is apparently also a commercial driver available from 4-Front technologies, but they don't recommend using the ZA2 w/ that driver. Apparently it is too different from the OSS design, but I'm probably going to try it anyway. If anybody's interested in how it works, let me know and I'll keep you posted. You can demo it in 7-day increments, or buy it for $20. If it works, I'll pay the $20. The DAT-Store sells some sort of black box that they say > will solve this, but I am also open to buying another DAT player that is > compatible with the SB Live input and just keeping it hooked up to the PC. I thought that the SB Live card had a coax I/O for SPDIF. If this is the case, then connecting the D8 to the SB Live would be a normal thing, if the D8 were a normal DAT player. Getting a coax I/O for SPDIF on the D8 isn't hard; Core Sound (http://www.core-sound.com) sells one cheaply. But the voltage level for the D8 isn't normal, and it isn't powerful enough for some devices (like my Philips DCC-900), and perhaps not enough for the SB Live!, either. If that's the case, and the DAT Store is pushing the Sony RMD3K I/O box, the DAT Store is wrong. But you should get a different card anyway. The SB Live resamples all inputs to 48 kHz, even 48 kHz sources, which adds extra digital noise and distortion. It is an awful card for digital audio, and Creative has really oversold it by saing it's "comparable" to a pro card. (By that extension, my Radio Shack walkman-type radio is "comparable" to a McIntosh tuner! <g>) Peace, <> David

(LONG) Hey all, Hope this finds all feeling healthy. Sorry if the subject is misleading but I am NOT selling bootlegs. But a man by the name of Vernon Edwards from Montevallo, Al. is. Somehow, I got signed up for this crooks mailing list. Have no clue to how but here's the deal. For the past few months, he's been sending me catalogs of various "Live Recordings" he has for sale. I thought I'd let it pass but after the 5th catalog, I decided to try and crack down on this. THIS IS WRONG AND HE SHOULD KNOW IT... Lemme give you a lil bit of the intro to his catalog: "...all are high-quality CDR's and include some realy hard to find titles. I cannot guarantee sound quality as audio quality can be very subjective. Price is TWENTY-FIVE DOLLARS PER DISC including postage. If i dont' hear from you after 3 lists, I will asume that you are no longer interested in this type merchandise and you name will be removed from the list." Well, SIX catalogs later, he STILL hasn't stopped. Some of the bands in his catalog include Grateful Dead, Phish, Dave Matthews, Blind Mellon, The Allman Bros. Band, and many many more. See, it's idiots like this guy that RUIN it for everyone who is doing this for fun and trying to spread good music to others around. I just think it's wrong and something should be done about it. Is there legal action that can be taken on a person doing this? I mean, he even ADVERTISES. Ok, sorry to take up your time. But i just wanted to make this known to all my other family members. If you would like to contact Mr. Edwards and let him know that what he's doing is wrong here's all his information: Vernon Edwards 103 Yellowhammer Circle Montevallo, Al. 35115 205-663-5185 recsbymail@aol.com Thanks for listening everyone. I was hoping that a few of them would reply, because I am missing the first 10 minutes of the Derek Trucks set. I was trying to get one of my Oade cables to work patching out of the taper's M-1 into MY M-1, but I kept getting a NO INPUT (d'ohhhh!!!). So eventually (alas) I had to go analog the whole night. Still came out great, but I missed the intro as well as Col. Bruce Hampton's guest appearance during the 2nd song Temptation struggling to get a digi-patch working. So PLEEEAAAAAAASE!!!! Any other tapers that were at Govt Mule for New Years Eve, drop me a line. I really need to get that Derek Trucks set complete and will trade you anything off my list for it. Even blanks and postage would be fine as well, whichever you prefer. NOTE: Sorry, this isn't a B&P offer for anybody groveling for the shows. I only need fellow tapers at the shows to reply. Thanks for your time. Peace and music, Brian

From: Neil <neilc@stratos.net> Subject: Computer To DDP Drives Date: Wed, 13 Jan 1999 11:44:14 -0500 Hi Over the last year that I've subscribed to this list there has been a few requests on how to transfer audio to a computer's DDP drive. The biggest problem was over the lack of suitable drivers. I've just read the "read me" file with Digidesign's Masterlist 2.01 CDR burning software. Here is a cut and paste from that file: DDP tape writing requires Mezzo Master Software from Grey Matter Response and a compatible Exabyte tape drive. Known Problems Writing DDP Tapes with Mezzo Master 1.1 - At this time, SCMS is not supported in the DDP format. Be sure to turn off SCMS settings in the PQ window before writing the DDP tape. After selecting "Export As 8mm DDP..." from the File menu, the Mezzo Master welcome screen may appear or the alert "MasterList CD could not complete DDP tape write!" may appear. If the alert appears, reselect "Export As 8mm DDP..." from the File menu and the Mezzo Master screen should appear. So, using Masterlist, Mezzo Master and a "compatible Exabyte tape drive", it looks like you can go from a computer to DDP. By the way, I don't know if Masterlist is available for the PC. I use a Mac. Thanks Neil
