From: "Haughton, Tom" <th18841@glaxowellcome.com> Subject: cd-r question Date: Wed, 13 Jan 1999 12:58:10 -0500 Hey, Now: I'm considering buying a sb live soundcard and cd burner for my computer. I've noticed that at least some cd recorders in computers make a blank space of varying duration between tracks, noticeable when copying live recordings. Is this a problem that occurs on all computer-based cd recorders, or just some makes/models...does anyone know of a computer cd burner that does not insert this blank space? I ask because I've made a few cd's on an hhb pdr-800, and this blank spot did not occur... Any help greatly appreciated. Peace, Tom Tom Haughton 483-8767 Maint. Planner Bldg. 8 N. and S. From: "Zawodny, Art" <ZawodAr@BAM.com> Subject: ZA2 and Win98 Date: Wed, 13 Jan 1999 12:59:26 -0500 A comment was made last issue about win98 and the ZA2. I have had no differences in performance with the ZA2 when moving from win95 to win98. I use a home made P150 with 32mb of RAM and IDE discs and CD/CDRs I still owe some folks Metallica DATs, they will be coming soon. I apologize for the delay, I got a ton of offers for these and its taking me a little while to get through them all.. Art Zawodny
From: "Anders Johansson" <ajo@algonet.se> Subject: Great live FM shows Date: Wed, 13 Jan 1999 21:47:08 +0100 Please note that we have a really great source of live music on FM here in Sweden - P3-live (program 3 - live). You will find the shows on this site: http://www.sr.se/p3/program/live/konsert/index.htm. Many of the bands that are mentioned here on this list are performing here. There are normally four shows sent every week. The sound of the shows are of excellent quality. Anders - "When I was at high school, I was planning to be a doctor. From: "Jack M. Dempsey" <jdempsey@ncinter.net> Subject: Inline Bass roll off Suggestions? Date: Wed, 13 Jan 1999 16:03:48 -0500 Hello all! I'm in need of a bass roll off for Phantom Powered Condensers. I'd like an inline that will allow the mics to stay powered without added phantom powering. I don't want to be dragging extra boxes around for rolloff, phantom etc.. while my preamp already provides phantom power. Does anyone make such a beast?
From: dlmo@cbmaila.cb.lucent.com Subject: Sony DTC-790 DAT Deck info Date: 13 Jan 99 16:08:00 -0500 Hi Folks, Thanks for all of the great information everyone has provided in the past. I have a question concerning the Sony DTC-790. I have already read the information in the market posting. When was the machine introduced? When was it discontinued? Does it in fact use a different transport than the ones Sony had problems with? (model DATM102) What is a used one worth? I noticed that they listed for $800 and were selling for $500 at one point. Does it have SCMS? Any reliability data sources for this deck? Known problems? A local store is going out of business and has one of these units on the shelf. I think it has been there a while, perhaps 2 or 3 years. The unit probably has been powered one for a huge number of hours, but probably has less than 10 hours on the heads. There is not a DAT tape in the store. I have a Sony 59ES and a Tascam DA-P1. My guess is the DTC-790 has SCMS and would not clone to my 59ES. The DA-P1 to the 59ES works every time. Thanks in advance for your help. Doug Moran dlmoran@lucent.com
From: "Michael A. I have transferred a lot of my DATs to CD, writing manual tracks in the process. This is nice in that there is no break in sound from one track to another, however, when I copy these disks using the disk syncro function, none of the tracks are copied. I thought the reason the CDs I made weren't transferring correctly because my play deck is an old CD player I had with NO digital outs. However, this doesn't explain why store bought CD tracks transfer w/out error. Does there need to be a break in the sound or do I need a CD player with Dig outs? Any help is appreciated. Silver/silver? Sounds like it's phthalocyanine dye (the same dye used in gold/gold CDs). Silver/silver also describes Ricoh Platinums and Mitsui silvers, which use phthalocyanine dye. Ritek isn't exactly known as a grade-A CD-R manufacturer. (They make or made the infamous Memorex/Dyson green/gold CD-Rs that weren't very stable.) Phthalocyanine dye doesn't burn as well as cyanine dye (the kind used for green/gold and silver/blue discs), and it isn't nearly as reflective. If there's no compensation made so the dye burns better and the disc is more reflective, you're going to have a disc that won't play well. They apparently took care of the reflectivity by making it silver, but I'd venture that these Ritek silver/silvers don't burn well. The fact that they're for 80 minute recording can't help either. Cyanine-dye discs seem to be easier to make. The first Mitsui discs had a reputation for having poor reflectivity and not burning well on many CD writers. But Mitsui took care of that in time, and now they have an excellent reputation! (The makers of cyanine-based discs also took pains to have their dye more stable, so the differences between well-made cyanine and phthalocyanine-based discs aren't nearly as great as they once were.) But I personally wouldn't want to use the 80-minute Riteks (or any Ritek disc) for long-term storage. Better to edit out parts you don't need, put it on multiple discs, or (God forbid :) save it on an archival DAT tape if long-term storage of a continuous performance is necessary. Peace, <> David

From: "Eric T. Nelson" <tourcrew@javanet.com> Subject: MMW 11.14.98 Date: Wed, 13 Jan 1999 18:06:42 -0600 Sorry to make you all listen to this, but... I am searching for the taper from Long Island who took my blank, envelope and postage at this show. You were running AKGc1000's>DAP1 and seemed very adamant that it would only take you a week or so to get the clone out to me, and it has now been two months time. I'm not trying to point the finger or issue a "bad trader" notice here, but I would at least like the blank back at this point. I feel pretty disrespected that someone else in the taping community would take advantage of a home-decker just trying to get a fresh clone of a show they attended... Anyway, thanks for the bandwidth... Eric

From: Jacob Meyer Lemberg <acoolguy@gladstone.uoregon.edu> Subject: selling tapes. Date: Wed, 13 Jan 1999 17:43:23 -0800 (PST) Yes, whether it is $1 or $100 does make a huge difference. It's the difference between selling for cost and illegally selling to make a profit and endanger everyone's 'right' to tape. But hey man, I guess it's all your karma... If one is selling tapes for less than the price of a blank that person is not making a profit, and therefore is living their life legally right? I would have to say that agencies like the RIAA and the FCC along with record themselves straight down to band itself(in 99% of the cases) would all disagree with this. Selling tapes for any price endangers the 'privilege' to tape.
From: Cdcreator@aol.com Subject: Plextor Manager Software Date: Wed, 13 Jan 1999 21:07:56 EST I currently own a Plextor 12/20 CD-ROM drive that I love, but I lost the Plextor Manager software that came with it. Plextor only has the update available on their web site, but I need the original software. I think that any Win 95 version should work with my drive, so I would greatly appreciate anyone either e-mailing me the setup file or letting me know how I can obtain it. I e-mailed their tech suupport, but I haven't heard back and I am getting desperate. I know that I don't need this software in order to get it to run under Windows, but I would still like to have it around. Thanks, Dylan
From: Larry Slavens <rooster@netins.net> Subject: Watch your credit card statement (yes, DAT content) Date: Wed, 13 Jan 1999 20:34:36 -0600 (CST) First off, let me stress that it could very well be a coincidence, and I won't name any names. But. . . The last two times I've ordered from one of the suppliers mentioned in the market posting, within a few days I've had fraudulent charges on my credit card. Never had this happen before in 20+ years of carrying credit cards, nor did it happen the previous 6-10 times I've used this supplier. So just a word to the wise: watch your statement (you should be doing that anyway!) and report any suspicions to your card issuer's risk specialists. From: pkmin@rsc.rockwell.com Subject: Re:preamps Date: Wed, 13 Jan 1999 20:07:21 -0800 "what if the same rig was used for every set of mics? set up at the same show, same location, and just switched out mics. it seems that the variables would be limited to the positioning of the mics. i would think that the constants ( preamp, cables, adc, mic stand, shock mounts, stand height, mix, hall acoustics, etc ) would be exact enough to get a good read on the sound of those mics. this system in the hands of a competent taper should produce a fair and honest representation of those mics on that rig." Hi Dale, In an ideal mic A/B, 2 pairs of mics would be taping the same thing in real time and be located in the same position. Unfortunately this isn't possible. So you attempt to simulate an A/B by bringing the stand down bw songs, change mics and put the stand back up for the next song(better yet climb up a ladder). While it is not ideal to be comparing difn't songs in an A/B, one can listen, recognize this, and still come to conclusions-especially if one is familiar with that band and how their difn't songs sound. The question becomes (and assuming that the soundguy hasn't tweeked the sound too much)would slight variations in positioning (who knows +/- 2 degrees on the individual mics, +/- 2 degrees of "overall rotation", or +/- 2" height)affect the end result in a way that it was more a contributing factor to the end resultant sound than the mics themselves? Maybe/maybe not-I don't know. It depends on the specific case/setup/acoustics/etc, but I do think that sometimes sound can be weird like that and that even slight positioning difnces could make a bigger difnce than one may think. I've set up close at a nice sounding show, was excited to get home and check out the tape only to find it sounded horrible (perhaps a minute change in mic positioning would have made a big improvement), and other times I've set up far away, wasn't very excited and the tape amazed me(maybe the mic was just positioned perfectly). I think the better preamp/A>D/cables you have that placement/positioning becomes even more impt. What's impt is to recognize that it could and not jump to a conclusion from a single equipment comparison tape. If the mics are fairly similar sounding to begin with I feel these minute positioning differences could easily be affecting the end sound more than the fact that they are 2 difn't mics. While it is always best to have been at the show, even if one wasn't at the shows, but has a bunch of mic A/B's from difn't shows like you speak of above and consistently prefers one mic over the other..then I do think it is OK to draw conclusions even though you weren't there(if you consistently like it better you consistently like it better, simple as that, who cares if you weren't there). Clearly difn't mics sound difn't and given enough data points one could begin to get a feel for the sound of one mic vs another......even if one wasn't there. "i guess the conclusion i am coming to is that both methods would be helpful to truly evaluate mics." Agreed. I see your point of view too and can appreciate the time and effort that goes into doing A/B's at shows. I basically just wanted to point out some of the uncertainties so that they should be taken for what they are. They aren't a true A/B--that's impossible. Of course its always best to have been at the show, heard the sound, and seen the actual setup. To me that is one of the "essences/joys" of taping. "keep in mind that this thread heated up when kurt posted that his cheap cable could " go up against any cable out there " assuming that he meant that it would sound as good, someone needed to enlighten him as to the fact that cables do sound different." I think cables do sound subtly difn't. I think gold plated connectors are impt too. That's more of a general belief rather than one based on blind A/B tests and convincing "my ears". Once I attempted to A/B audioquest ruby rca cables vs. sony rca cables(the ones that came with my CD8ES or something like that CD player)on my stereo and thought I could hear difnces but I also realized that since I knew which was which that that could have easily affected my thinking(that $100 better be making my stereo sound better!). The difnces were subtle at best (maybe my stereo wasn't up to par to even hear the difnces, 1978 luxman amp>1978 bose 601 w velodyne sub)and I got sick of the entire process. Knowing something beforehand can (and I feel often will)change your thinking/decision making process, esp when you get into the really high end and $$ stuff. So I make the statement that "cables sound subtly difnt" bc they are a "multi-component materials science composite" and I think that everything affects everything else. Difn't materials/processing/constructions/treatments/quality control all contribute to the difn't sound. I haven't heard that different sound, yet I still feel that way. I think a lot of it is personal preference. What you think sounds better (in a cable)someone else may thinks sounds worse. However the effect of cables on sound is far less impt than being in the sweet spot. As an occasional FOB taper, I know exactly where Kurt is coming from. He emphasized good connections, and not being bulky. Those are the most impt factors in a cable for FOB. The FOB taper is much more concerned about his (or her)immediate surroundings than cables. That's bc your immmediate surroundings and location are orders upon orders of magnitude more impt to the end result than whether or not you were using "insert name of favorite megabucks cable" cable. "making great tapes consistently require more than just luck and a good seat." Once I posted what I felt was impt to making a great tape, I couldn't find it in the archives but I started with 1. the band should be having a lot of fun/smokin' performance. peace, Pete
