Hello all - if anyone gets this very fun, very taper friendly (DAT sbd
welcome, just ask their soundguy tomas) band on DAT, sbd or excellent aud,
let me know, I'd like to get a dub. Have Donna and much else to trade.

Unbiased answers right? Anyone want to place bets on which he'll

Or you could get a run of shielded cable, and solder two pins on it (cut
off resistor legs will be fine).
Then just put a RCA plug on the other end and you are set.
You need to poke the two pins into the D8, a little research will tell you
which holes you need.

Sorry for the none-dat content, but ...
Just wanted to inform anyone that is thinking of using a DVD as a playback
machine for burning CDR's, that not all DVD's will play a burned CD. After
buying a Panasonic A110, I had to return it for it would not recognize my
disk. We then tried it in a Sony s300 and it worked fine. I then tried it
in a Panasonic a310 and no luck. We also tried a Yahama and JVC both w/ no
luck.
So you are probably thinking it's the disks fault, but my disks are burned
on an hhb cdr-800. And this deck is suppose to make disks that play on all
machines. So, if you are thinking of buying a DVD for playback, test it out
first to make sure it works.
If anyone else is using a dvd, please let me know if this is typical.
now back to your regularly programmed content.

My TCD-D3 just returned from repair for distortion problems and it's
worse than before with old and newly recorded tapes on my ES-60 showing
continuous distortions where it was intermittent before the repair !
Any suggestions ?

I'm a DAT user but I'm helping some friends buy a MiniDisc recorder
because it's cheaper... A few questions:
- What experience have you have with the various portable recorders (Sony
MZ-R30, MZ-R50 and the Sharp portable)? I really like the design of the
Sharp: front loading, very tiny. But I wonder how hard those odd little
controls are to use. And what about service?
- Is it possible to go directly from MiniDisc to CD? What sampling rate
does it record at? If it's not possible to go directly MD-CD, how can I
make a digital copy of a MD on other media?
- Who has the best prices on these portable DAT recorders? I haven't seen
the Sharp for sale much, and almost everybody seems to be charging the
same prices on the Sonys.
Thanks,
Peter

Some month ago, I've tried the evaluation version of OSS on my system
(2.1.125, 2*P200MMX, SoundBlaster16PnP + ZA2) and got things running
without too many problems (just a kernel re-compile as described in the
OSS README files). Both sound card were supported simultanenously
(/dev/dsp1 /dev/dsp2 ...).
However, since ZA2 support in OSS is limited (e.g. only 48kHz output,
details: see below), since an additional $30.00 option for the ZA2
licence is required (-> total $50.00), and since the source code is not
available (-> there is no chance to fix/optimise things), I have not yet
opted for this driver ... and I am still waiting for a open source
version of such a driver - knowing that there are some ZA2-activities in
the GPL-based "Advanced Linux Sound Architecture" project
http://alsa.jcu.cz/
Happy taping ...

Well, I'm not going to ridicule you, but it's a good idea to look at
the rear panel as well as the front panel when trying to compare two
pieces of gear. The D5 has vastly superior I/O, with fully balanced
analog and digital. It also has SPDIF optical. It also has an error
rate display. It does not support SCMS at all.
In other words, the D5 is a much more "pro" machine than the DA20,
even though the mechanics are identical.
The other machine with identical mechanics is the Pioneer D-05.
Andrew.

Why not? Just use a 6" extension tube on top of the 5/8" fitting above the
first bracket for the mics, and put the second set above that...

Is 2" height meaningful when you're dealing with a p/a system, for a/b
comparisons? I think not. Is it meaningful when micing a drum kit? Yes.
... Later ...

Philosophically speaking, yes, you cannot have a truly transcendental A/B
experience w/ every quantum particle's state accurately reproduced. But
for equipment comparison uses, It's perfectly valid to setup 2 mics about
6" off of each other, vertically, and run them into a 4 track (or 8, or
whatever) and then play the tape back, A/B ing the differences... I would
rather use the other 2 tracks for omni's to complement the cards...
(heh... heh... More BASS...) You could even just run them into 2 DAT decks
and alternate..., but the 4 track is elegant, (and a good DBX 4 track is
fairly cheap...)
peace

Fairly credible rumors have the Rolling Stones playing a surprise show at
the Fillmore on Saturday, January, 23rd and possibly another show on the
24th (no info on venue - Warfield, Slims, Great American???) They are
scheduled to begin rehearsals at the Oakland Arena this Sunday.
The last surprise gig at the Double Door in Chicago was limited to under
500 people. Wristbands/tickets cost only $7 (this is not a typo). How was
it advertised? DD workers matter-of-factly put up "The Rolling Stones
Appearing Tonight" on the marquee in the morning the day of the show and
passersby got lucky. Subsequent word-of-mouth and eventually radio
coverage broke the news to the larger public. Of course, by the time the
masses rushed down, they weren't selling anymore ducats. I don't recall if
the Fillmore has a marquee, but it may be worthwhile to hang out the day
before and the morning/afternoon of the 23rd. Good luck to you if it
happens. Of course, I would appreciate a clone if any tapers are
successful. I will repost this several days before the 23rd so I apologize
in advance to those who may see it more than once. Thanks.

You should have the right to sell your tapes for the value of the tape
itself, regardless of what is on it. The physical tape itself has a monetary
value, and the RIAA or anyone cannot prevent you from selling it. There
should be no requirement you erase or degauss tapes before you sell them.
This whole topic is actually pretty ridiculous, its not like these guys are
selling tapes for $20 or $30 each like the lousy ass bootlegs sold in
stores. Go after the professional bootlegers if you must, but leave us
tapers alone who just want to get out of the hobby and recoup a fraction of
the thousands of dollars we spent along the way. Use some common sense.
