From: Paul Skinner <paul_skinner@dialog.com> Subject: ISO: Mogwai Date: Thu, 14 Jan 1999 14:41:04 +0000 Hi All, I'm putting together a checklist/guide to Mogwai tapes out there. Any info you might have to add would be muchos welcomed. I've got a skeletal version of the site together now at http://www.paulskinner.com/mogwaitape.html . Take a look and let me know what I'm missing/wrong on! Thanks Paul
From: Rick Gebhard <rgebhard@remc7.k12.mi.us> Subject: DA-20MKII for sale, looking for Phish tapers Date: Thu, 14 Jan 1999 10:09:18 First, I have a DA-20MKII for sale. Mint, mint, mint! Less than 20 hours, but I'm getting a DA-30. $600 OBO. Second, at two fall Phish shows, I gave blanks and postage to tapers as I entered. I normally tape, but my wife is pregnant and we needed seats. I haven't seen or heard anything from either show. Grand Rapids 11/11/98 amd University of Illinois at Chicago 11/7/98. I can understand being too busy to make clones, but just keeping the blanks is pretty rude and not how tapers should treat each other. If you are one of these guys, please send my blanks or the shows as you agreed. If anyone has these shows and would be willing to pass them on for a b&p or a trade, I'd appreciate it. It's been long enough now that I don't really expect a reply (unfortunately). Thanks for any help, Rick

From: John.Read@infores.com (John Read) Subject: re: selling tapes :( Date: Thu, 14 Jan 1999 09:23:53 -0600 I thought this thread was worth putting in my two cents worth of bandwidth: I vote for NEVER selling a bootleg.. It sounds bad, it feels bad, it just IS bad. I have been trading analogs (and now DATs) for about 14 years and I have never before heard of anyone trying to rationalize selling tapes even for the price of the blank. This is why we TRADE folks. I buy a blank, and give it to someone who will make a copy of a show for me: end of story. If postage is involved, you give them a stamped envelope. Money for bootlegs in any form has always been bad news. We do not have the right to tape our beloved bands, they give us the privilege. Let's honor their request to not sell these even for nonprofit. It was always bad karma to ask a taper to buy blanks from them in the good ole Grateful Dead days, why start now? DATs are readily available, especially mail-order, (www.tape.com is just one good cheap source @3-5 bucks a tape.) Why mess with a tradition that has served us all so well for decades? Thanks for the space to cast my vote. -jr, Chicago It's only bucks, you don't need no jack. So won't you please relax and lay way back. -Bob Weir "money-money"
From: "Lee Stanley" <lstanley@askcts.com> Subject: RE: SELLING BOOTLEGS.... (LONG) Date: Thu, 14 Jan 1999 09:19:43 -0600 I'm glad to know this information. I live about 15 minutes from Montevallo. I may just go pay him a visit and tell him personally how I feel about it. Either way, being local to this joker will make it easy to rain on his parade. I'll contact some agencies in the Birmingham area and see what can be done about it. This guy is a slap in the face to tapers everywhere. Peace, Lee From: "Williams, Michelle" <williams@rti.org> Subject: SELLING BOOTLEGS.... (LONG) Hey all, Hope this finds all feeling healthy. Sorry if the subject is misleading but I am NOT selling bootlegs. But a man by the name of Vernon Edwards from Montevallo, Al. is. Somehow, I got signed up for this crooks mailing list. Have no clue to how but here's the deal. For the past few months, he's been sending me catalogs of various "Live Recordings" he has for sale. I thought I'd let it pass but after the 5th catalog, I decided to try and crack down on this. THIS IS WRONG AND HE SHOULD KNOW IT... Lemme give you a lil bit of the intro to his catalog: "...all are high-quality CDR's and include some realy hard to find titles. I cannot guarantee sound quality as audio quality can be very subjective. Price is TWENTY-FIVE DOLLARS PER DISC including postage. If i dont' hear from you after 3 lists, I will asume that you are no longer interested in this type merchandise and you name will be removed from the list." Well, SIX catalogs later, he STILL hasn't stopped. Some of the bands in his catalog include Grateful Dead, Phish, Dave Matthews, Blind Mellon, The Allman Bros. Band, and many many more. See, it's idiots like this guy that RUIN it for everyone who is doing this for fun and trying to spread good music to others around. I just think it's wrong and something should be done about it. Is there legal action that can be taken on a person doing this? I mean, he even ADVERTISES. Ok, sorry to take up your time. But i just wanted to make this known to all my other family members. If you would like to contact Mr. Edwards and let him know that what he's doing is wrong here's all his information: Vernon Edwards 103 Yellowhammer Circle Montevallo, Al. 35115 205-663-5185 recsbymail@aol.com Thanks for listening everyone. It's nice to have a family to spill your guts to. Let's keep lookin out for each other. Much love to you all... From: Gordon Gidluck <ggidluck@artelco.com> Subject: Moving WAV files between systems Date: Thu, 14 Jan 1999 09:07:32 -0800 I would like to perhaps publish a list of innovative ways to transmit those valuable DAT recordings between one PC and another. My situation is that I have two computers one has a digital i/o card and the other has a regular soundcard. Other users, I know, have desktop PC's with digital i/o and laptops to which they would like to get their audio files into digitally. The system I have with the digital i/o is a Win3.1 system. I want to start playing around with Win95 audio software on the other machine so I want to copy files to the new system and do some mastering on it with new software like Samplitude 2496 which is Win95 only. Idea: ===== Use the serial ports on each system to transmit the data at 115200bps. This requires a serial cable/null modem adapter/laplink software. Throughput was about 80mb per hour in laplink's fast mode. (A 19 minute recording in 44.1Khz stereo to 2.5hrs.) This is about 8:1 slower than realtime playback. Send me your ideas and let's compile a list on dat-heads. I would be interested to know if some of you have used ethernet 10mbps/100mbps cards and have timings on data throughput in seconds. Maybe you have an idea requiring radio frequency or infra-red transmitters/receivers. If some of you are using USB let us know how quick that can get. Just to establish some ground rules, let's just say (1) your idea has to make a bit for bit copy of the file, and (2) you have to have actually tested it for data throughput. Let's also say your idea (3) has to be able to handle a CD's worth of data 650mb. (ie. You couldn't suggest to use a 100mb Zip drive, unless you use a program to break your file up and reassemble it on the other system. A Jaz drive would be ok, because it can handle 1gb). Let me say that I believe that this is relevant to the dat-head community. I will leave it up to you if you want .cc. dat-heads or not on your ideas. I will compile our list of ideas and timings. You will receive credit on dat-heads if you are first to suggest that idea. Gordon

From: Steven Kingsley <steven@airsys.net> Subject: Inquiring mind Date: Thu, 14 Jan 1999 11:16:55 -0500 With all this talk of the dye's inside a cd I thought of something. If I spin a dat, to a cd... then the cd ends up a coaster, and I for some strange reason reap great joy from breaking the cd in half, am I exposing myself to any dangerous (carcinogen?) chemicals? This seems to be not exact: Any digital input, either from CDr player, S/P DIF or internal sound processing is first converted to 48k samples per second and then converted to what ever the recording program requests. There is no "direct through" or what ever it may be named.... Norbert

However, this doesn't explain why store >bought CD tracks transfer w/out error. Does there need to be a >break in the sound or do I need a CD player with Dig outs? If you want to transfer track IDs, you must use a digital out of the CD player. That's the only way that information can get transferred. The track IDs probably transfer correctly on store bought CDs because there is a break between tracks and the HHB is set to some auto-mode so that when there is a break it adds the track ID. Yes, you need a CD player with digital output. -Jeff Lester
From: "Lee Stanley" <lstanley@askcts.com> Subject: CD-r clone coding Date: Thu, 14 Jan 1999 13:47:27 -0600 I remember reading somewhere that a code is copied on cd's that will prevent you from making further copies after one or two generations. Bottom line, wait til the new generation of players are out, same goes with Dolby Digital receivers, current crop likely won't be fully compatible with the lossless DVD Audio 1.0 spec.
