I have a comment on the tape selling thread, which by the way is getting old.
If a guy has too many tapes in his collection and he wants to get rid of
some of them for what he paid for the blanks, there is nothing wrong with
that.
If the tapes that the shows were on didn't cost us anything, then selling them
would be different. Hey HHB, Apogee; want to donate some tapes??
I spent a small fortune building my dat collection when I first started
trading. I was spending $50 or more a week on blanks, trying to get every show
of a tour or any and all the new shows going around. It hit me one day when I
looked around at all the dozens of tapes I had acquired and I thought to
myself: "When the hell are you going to find time to listen to ALL of those
tapes in their entirety?" As a result, I sold a large portion of my dat
collection to a friend of mine for the cost of the blanks. He has tons of time
where he is at home or in the car and can listen to many tapes. Not only that,
it was a great deal for him since he didn't have to go to all the work and
trouble I did of acquiring them through mail trades. I recouped my expenses,
and helped a guy get a nice size collection going. I can now take some of the
money I got back and focus on getting material I am more interested in, as
opposed to anything and everything. I didn't sell any tapes for profit, and
nobody lost in that situation. You people that can't understand the difference
in the two have issues you need to work on.
My radically despised two cents...

In response to playing CDR's on DVD's
Here's my experience, not gospel
I took my cdr's to stereo shops when I was recently looking for a new stereo
(got one!)
I found that most dvd's were 24 bit processors and couldn't interpret 8 & 16
information. Some dvd's had a setting I could switch at the shop and would
play them, other didn't. best bet is to go to a buncch of stereo stores
and bring your cd's and try it out, talk with the mechanic in the back, the
salesmen usually arent aas good.
Please correct me if I'm wrong
Best of luck

Sorry for the none-dat content, but ...
Just wanted to inform anyone that is thinking of using a DVD as a playback
machine for burning CDR's, that not all DVD's will play a burned CD.
If anyone else is using a dvd, please let me know if this is typical.
this has been discussed previously on the list...only certain models
include "dual pickups" (dunno if this is the correct term) ...that is, the
capability to play traditional CDs (and CDRs) and DVDs...I know the higher
end Sonys do (I think the 7000 is the reference model?) I have the pioneer
dvl 700 (currently out for repairs under warranty for not playing dual
layer dvds!) and it plays cdrs fine....

Any suggestions ?

Just had my first chance to watch the video after a busy week.
David Byrne's first mini interview confirmed, and also was just
what I was waiting to hear verbally for a very long time.
Tapers are welcome; spreads the music, free advertising....
I just wish there were many more bands with the same outlook,
although some really got burned by bootleggers.
Spread the music for free, personal enjoyment.

Box Mics: $125
Setup used primarily for mastering and as a DAT>CDR transfer system.
All are in excellent condition. The mics have been used for less than 10

The D8 has less than 30 hours of use. The D8 has a few minor surface scratches
on the back side of the deck. All include original boxes, etc. Anyone willing

Just to followup yesterday's post:
I want to stress that I have no hard proof that the supplier in question had
anything to do with the credit card fraud I suffered this week and a couple
months ago; it's very possible that the fraud and my orders falling closely
together was just a coincidence. I have ordered a number of times from this
company on a fairly regular basis, which could increase the chance of
coincidence.
I also will not name the company, here or privately; since there's no proof
of wrongdoing, I don't wish to slander what could be a perfectly innocent
company. My intention is to raise the awareness level that we should be
checking our credit card statements closely, reporting false charges
immediately, and passing along to the credit card company any information or
tips that they may find useful.
Despite being hit twice in the last three months with card fraud, I'm not
going to stop purchasing from the company or from others over the Internet.
By law, consumer liability for fraudulent transactions is limited to $50,
and almost every card issuer is going to waive that charge for competitive
and public relations reasons. A card number is just as likely to be stolen
by a retail store employee pocketing a copy of your sales slip, by a
waitress placing a phone order (or running to a retail store next door,
which happened here a couple years ago), or by anyone else who has access to
your card number.
So just keep your eyes open. . .

Hi All,
I've been thinking about this "selling tapes" thread, and I think both
sides have valid points. Keep in mind, I'm not selling any tapes but I
thought of a solution that might make everyone happy (including the
artists) if you're willing to work a bit.
I think if you want to liquiDATe your collection and get cash, you
should offer your collection up for B&P, then sell your factory sealed
blanks. Would this idea step on anyones toes? I think not!
Personally, I don't care if you don't like the idea because I can't
imagine I'd ever want to sell my tapes. I just had the thought and
decided to share it. It always seems as though we work against one
another when a "hot topic" pops up rather than trying to come up with a
solution, so there's my suggestion! Ok, ok, I know, enough...

Hello All!
I have been scanning the net for info on some good mics. I have had
some excellent opinions and pieces of advice and to that I say thanks to
all. I just want to get some other info. There are many brands of mics
out there available. CoreSounds, marcSounds, Sound Pros, Sonic Studios,
and Countryman ISOMAX are some notable makers of stealthy binaurals and
cardioids. Then there are the more expensive mics such as Neumanns,
AKGs, and Schoeps. I can't even afford the capsules for the Schoeps!!!
I would love it if someone could give me a brie run-down of each of
these brands performance and history. Which one is best in each of the
categories?? I want to tape with some binaural type stealth mics. And
what is the modular type mics?? Len from Coresound and Chris from Sound
Pro have both given me some useful advice. I am poor at the time ( I am
a self-funded student!) and can only afford about $100 for a pair or set
of mics. I would also like some info on the single point stereo tpe
mics Like the Sony ECM line of mics. I heard a show taped with one of
those mics and it sounded killer!! I am thinking of just building my
own mics. I have seen the MicDIYers page and it seems like a good
idea!! Can any one tell me about home made mics?? What sort of
modifications do the professionals actually make to that little
Panasonic capsule that makes them so much better that homemade mics??
Anything would be very appreciated!!!!!!

Subject: Reasonable $.02 on "Selling DATs"
Date: Fri, 15 Jan 1999 02:33:00 -0500
While I hate to belabor this point further, it seems to me that this is a
simple matter of saving money for both parties-economics-rather than the
ad-hoc taping "morals" so widely referenced on this forum.
Let's say I, taper, have 30 shows on KAO Gold 60M I don't want. Let's say
Mr X wants them.
For him to "compensate" me by "trading," he would have to spend (Terrapin
Prices) $3.95x30 + $4 ship to him, then an additional probably $4 or so to
ship blanks to me, along with the return postage I would then be "owed."
Seems to me, as the taper, sure, I would be thrilled to get blanks and
postage. If I was in the position of the newbie trying to buy some stuff
to get started, though, I'd much prefer to send some money to compensate
the guy who probably got the 50-unit price (no shipping) on the DATs than
go to the hassle of ordering some and paying shipping three times over.
So when I look at someone selling DATs, sure, I cringe. I'd hate to see
people make a profit from a hobby where the rest of us lose untold
thousands a year. But when I set aside my ill-defined "taping morals" and
look at the facts, it DOES matter how much is being charged, and it leads
me to ask--who is spreading the music, and who is spreading pretentious
rhetoric?
Just something to think about.

The sonys are smaller, however, the sharp has the ability of changing
recording levels during the recording. With the Sony's you'll have to
stop recording, adjust the levels, and resume recording.

Yes, 44.1, however, you'll need a home deck with a digital out, as none

Probably one of about a thousand similar posts by now... :-)
Cheaper option: 2 10mps ethernet cards ($15 each), Cat.5 UTP crossover
cable ($5-10). Don't bother with thin ethernet/co-ax. If you have
several machines, get a cheap 10mps ethernet hub (4 or 8 port hubs go
for about $50) and some regular Cat.5 UTP patch cables.
Faster option: 2 10/100mps ethernet cards ($25 each), Cat.5 UTP
crossover cable. Again, if you have several machines, Bay Netgear and
Intel both do 4 port fast ethernet hubs for around $100.
If you can, set up the cards to run in duplex (20mps/200mps). The
actual throughput you get will also depend on the machines pushing the
data down the wire - most boxes will probably not be able to generate
anything like 100mps.
BTW - if yr using Laplink (et al), you'll get faster throughput using
the parallel port instead of the serial port.
Hope this helps?!?

How to move data files quickly between systems? Ethernet. Even at full
retail at CompUSA you can get Ethernet combo cards (10baseT and 10Base2) for
under $20. They come with T connectors. A couple of bucks for terminating
resistors, plus a short hunk of coax and you're on the air. This runs at 10
Megabits per second. You can estimate file transfers at about one megabyte
per second, assuming your processor, bus, and disk can sustain that rate.
Figure that a 650Mb CD filled to the brim can be sent across such a setup
in about 11 minutes. I've transferred such quantities across just such a
network at home many, many times. Now if you want to get fancy, for about
$50 you can buy an 8 port hub, use the 10baseT connector and let your
buddies bring their computers over, plug a cable into the hub and become
part of your network. Then when you're done copying all that music around,
you can fire up a Quake II game and spend the rest of the day engaged in
virtual death and destruction.
For the budget minded, old NE2000 ethernet cards can be had for about $5
each at many hamfests. Terminating resistors for maybe a buck apiece, and a
coax cable to connect them for another $2. Add a couple bucks for t
connectors and four dollars for admission to the show, and you're networked
for $20. You'll never do the floppy shuffle or the serial link snooze
again.
Cheers,
Jim
PS: Yes, I'm a computer nerd. I now have 5 computers in the house, and a
network hub on each floor. This makes it very easy to tell the kids to stay
off my computer and to tell visitors "just plug your network card into an
open port on the hub. Use 192.168.1.101 for your IP address. Coffee's in
the kitchen, and we're playing Capture the Flag as soon as you're up"

I have a relative who is a chemist for Dow and is currently working on a

hi dat heads, cdr heads, & phish grovelers
how much common sense does it take to go running to the cops when you
see something going down that you don't like? guys are calling the fbi,
the riaa, the local johnny's. what ever happened to minding your own
business? how many situations have you been in where the arrival and or
presence of the police actually improved the situation. do you want
someone turning you in because they saw you fire it up, and they think
that smoking reefer is wrong? don't ever forget that what comes around
goes around. crying to our government is not the answer. the answer,
IMHO, is having all bands allowing taping! instead of phoning johnny
law, who doesn't give a shit about the bands, you, or the bootlegger,
try writing a nice letter to your favorite band's management that
doesn't allow taping. encourage them to reexamine their policy. with the
advent of cdr's, there is no reason why folks can't get live music in
their possession. the cdr is the bootlegger's best friend, but it will
be his downfall as well. be patient. spend your time doing positive
works, not negative. being a stoolie, narc, snitch, crybaby, etc, is not
the answer.
