I know Eco Charge is the place .....but don't have the $200 so I think I can build this for a lot less....Here's what I need..... Equipment to power: A Sony D8 and SBM1......both are 6volt units..... Either a Nak M100 Mixer......10v....or small preamp???? open for suggestions??????? Would love to run all off one battery.....I picked up a 12v 7.0ah battery for starters ...now I'm hoping some kind soul has figured this out and can help me out or at least point me in the right direction....All help Much appreciated... If you want to know what they look like, how well they're built and how they sound, I'd be glad to share what I know. We work hard to keep Core Sound mics better than our competition so we regularly evaluate other folks' mics. If asked, I can compare what the Soundman OKM IIR offers, feature by feature, to what we offer in the same price range. From: Gianni Pavan <gpavan@telnetwork.it> Subject: Re: Moving WAV files between systems Date: Fri, 15 Jan 1999 20:35:52 +0100 I'm greatly interested in this topic as I often need to store or transfer large amount of sound data. Storage and transfer are two very different things, though they often share the same requirements and problems. Just about this topic I recenty asked in this list information about radio-links to transfer spdif data and about wireless USB hubs. Why ? for my research activities I would like to transfer digital audio data among systems not physically connected, for example on two different sailing boats... while recording underwater sounds from marine mammals. Now, back to the transfer rate problem: I tested the following system: a P200 desktop PC with a PCI 10baseT ethernet card connected to a P233MMX notebook with a pcmcia 10baseT ethernet card (pcmcia, not CardBus!). Both 10Mbps ethernet cards, both running w98. I transferred a 210MB file among the above systems and, with a stopwatch, a measured the file transfer time: desktop --->> notebook 410 seconds on average notebook --->> desktop 350 seconds on average in both cases I got a transfer rate well below (less than half) the expected 10Mbps! Maybe 10 Mbps means 5Mbps in a direction and 5 in the other direction ? Or these poor performances depend by the slow pcmcia bus (typically no more than 800kbytes per second can be transferred). other tests: desktop, copy on the same IDE HD, different partition 115 seconds desktop, copy on a different IDE HD 65 seconds N.B. these results strongly depends on the controller and on the HDs. Most MD machines have sampling rate converters built into them to convert input data streams to their 44.1 kHz rate. All but the very oldest portable MD recorders only have a digital input, no output; home decks have both. From a home MD deck you can record to a CD-R from an MD directly, in the digital domain. Keep in mind that, while portable MD recorders are very small & convenient, and their sound has improved tremendously in the last two years, they still compress their data. Under some circumstances you can hear the artifacts of the compression process. In general though, MDs sound very good. Incredibly good, if you consider their price (around $250). Also, the longest blank MD is 74 minutes. > - Who has the best prices on these portable DAT recorders? As she explained it to me in >laymans terms, the information on CDs creates holes, and physics says >that these will eventually fill in,therefore destroying the inforamtion >on the disc. This is incorrect. The data on CDs is indeed encoded in physical holes, or pits, etched into the aluminum medium. But those pits will not "fill in" - that would require some sort of external force to redistribute the material, such as an applied voltage which results in electromigration and redistribution of thealuminum. There is no applied force to a CD, except its rotation. The more likely degradation mechanism is oxidation ("rusting") of the aluminum. As more of the Al turns into Al2O3, its reflectivity changes, and the disc no longer reflects the laser properly. The source of the oxidation is oxygen (duh) and moisture, which diffuse through the plastic over time. Rick's relative is likely working on a plastic with very low permeability of oxygen and moisture. ISO: Moxy Fruvous, Barenaked Ladies (the older the better). Alek

My friend's player (a Sony changer that apparently let in dust too easily) played some CDs flawlessly, but others with skips, every time. After using a regular $12 lens cleaner, it played all CDs without skips! I can't explain why it would do this, except that the troublesome CDs were harder to read, and the extra dust just pushed it over the edge a little. I don't know how new your DVD player is, but I'd give it a try--it's worth having a lens cleaner anyway, IMO--if for no other reason than to rule out the possiblity of dust. BTW, I'm assuming these are 74 minute CD-Rs, no? Have you tried other brands of 74-minute CD-Rs to see if they also had problems? (Kodaks--or at least the ones made before a few months ago--are less reflective than most other CD-Rs. But that shouldn't cause problems with a dual pickup system like Sony's.) Peace, <> David

The problem is that DVD players use a shorter wavelength laser, enabling the higher density of DVDs. This laser can usually read CDs, but add in the problem with the reflectivity reduction of CDRs and you get no music 8-( The Sonys have two lasers. One the correct wavelength for DVDs, one the correct wavelength for CDs / CDRs. BTW, I bought a Sony S300 DVD player - partially for this reason - and although it will play CDRs, it is problematic. It will deal with Mitsui, Verbatim, TDK, and most other blue disks, but does occasionally skip, and it won't even touch the green or gold disks. BTW, my Sony ES car stereo also has problems with most CDRs (it loves Verbatims and Mitsuis). Anyone notice a trend here? My recommendation is don't count on any DVD player as your primary audio CD player. At least not yet. Drew
