Two things could be happening. Sony Mobile ES CD players use ESP (electronic
shock protection) that spins the disc at twice it's normal speed. I bet the
laser is not spending enough time over the disc to really lock onto it. I also
use a Mobile ES CD player and have encountered skipping problems, usually only
with discs burned on computer burners and not from my Philips CDR870 (which I
only use Verbatims in).
The other thing is: notice that Sony doesn't offer any CD-R recorders for
consumers? I think this has something to do with their major push to get MD to
sell in the US.
Food for thought.

This seems to be the place with the experience to help me out setting up
to Have at It in this world of Digital recording!! I have a few
questions that I think you folks can help me out with. Let me start by
saying I have read every FAQ, Helpful Hints, and A Good bit of the
DAT-Heads archive. All of the information is a bit overwhelming and I
was hoping for a little more Human touch. I want to set up a decent
Digital Recording rig that will allow me to tape shows (ALA Sony D8 w
Core Sound Mini Cardiods) and then trade and transfer with CD! I'm
starting by ugrading my computer and Hitting one of the Sony Outlet
stores for the D8 (unless I find a better price for something
comprable). I'm going with a Super Socket 7 Motherboard with the AMD
K-6 2 350 Mhz processor. I'm not quite so sure about brands/models for
the CD-R and New Hard drive except that SCSI seems to be the answer. My
budget is limited (I'm just a Bartender) so I can't go too high on the
prices. My big obstacle is deciphering just what kind of Soundcard to
use with this setup!! I would like to be able to trade without being
Hamperd by SCMS but it seems inevitable. The card I'm leaning toward
now is the Turtle Beach Multisound Fiji.... seems to be a really good
card. Any other suggestions around $200 (or Less... ; ) ) Can I use
my existing soundcard to Duplicate CD's and upgrade to the better card
later?!? I understand that I won't be able to transfer the DAT into the
computer until I do. I guess what I'm after is to see what other people
have put together successfully that works reasonably well. I would love
to be able to be a true Audiophile (I have the ears for it) but
unfortuneately I can't afford to be. I want to avoid data dropout and
try to skate around the SCMS issue. Any advice would be appreciated on
how to get this ball rolling without taking out a loan!! Thank you in
Advance!
Peace and Panic,
Ben

I am pretty sure the sony portables have no way of adjusting
recording levels.
There is a low and high sensitivity setting, but the high setting is VERY
sensitive, so the low setting is ideal for live recording.
This is the one problem I ran into with my MZ-R50, and one
of the many reasons I went DAT.
The advantage the Sharp has over the Sony is actually quite
significant.

If you're in the southeast (SC > FL), Philadelphia's own Fathead is on tour
down there now - and they are taper friendly. AUD, SB, photo and video are
welcome (if anyone tapes any of these shows, get in touch so we can work
out a trade - as far as I know, there haven't been tapers at many of the
shows so far). Here's the remaining tourdates:
Sat Jan 16th Green Parrot Key West FL
Tue Jan 19th Sidebar Gainsville FL
Wed Jan 20th Covered Dish Gainsville FL
Thur Jan 21st Orbit Ft. Meyers FL
Fri Jan 22nd Willie's Bar Orlando FL
Sat Jan 23rd Indigo Room Ft. Meyers FL

Thur Jan 28th Georgia Theater Augusta GA
Fri Jan 29th YingYang Club Atlanta GA
Sat Jan 30th Atlanta GA (tentative)
Wed Feb 3rd Columbia SC (tentative)
Thur Feb 4th Cumberlands Charleston SC
Sat Feb 6th Bessies Wilmington NC
see http://www.fatheadmusic.com for updated info, Real Audio and info.
For those that have not heard Fathead, they combine a wide range of styles
(jazz, acid jazz, hard core, hip-hop, jamming) that has no definition in
and of itself. I've got plenty of Fathead and other stuff to trade if
anyone tapes any of these shows.

in both cases I got a transfer rate well below (less than half) the
expected 10Mbps!
Maybe 10 Mbps means 5Mbps in a direction and 5 in the other direction ?
Or these poor performances depend by the slow pcmcia bus (typically no more
than 800kbytes per second can be transferred).
other tests:
desktop, copy on the same IDE HD, different partition 115 seconds
desktop, copy on a different IDE HD 65 seconds
N.B. these results strongly depends on the controller and on the HDs.
Gianni
I'm no expert here, but lots of items come into play: OS (NT seems to be
the fastest MS network), Ethernet cards (3com parallel tasking seems a bit
faster than intels and others) and of course if you are using a 10MB hub,
the bandwidth is divided among the attached devices (this is why using
switches is great)..also the type of hard drive, speed of computer etc etc
etc. I currently run 100Mb and am able to burn cds across the network w/o
problems...do I get full 100Mb? not at all! I don't think anyone does, if I
run full duplex I get tons of collisions..10Mb is molasses slow though...
BTW: my laptop, a 150MMX using a xircom 10/100 is almost as fast as my
desktop machines at a 100mb, having cardbus cards greatly improves
throughput..

Subject: PCMCIA sound cards
Date: Sat, 16 Jan 1999 10:40:55 EST
A month or two ago, I posted requesting that anyone with info on PCMCIA ("PC
CARD") sound cards (digital or high-quality analog) respond to me.
Well, I did not receive any responses, but I e-mailed a variety of
manufacturers, and for the benefit of DAT-heads everywhere, I am posting that
I found two companies that specialize in such products.
One is "EMU" and one is "DIGIGRAM".
Both have web sites with details on these products. Some of the e-mails I got
back from (OTHER) sound card manufacturers were interesting....."Well,
interesting idea, but I am afraid that it is not possible to do have digital
input on a Laptop PC Card...." (Guess they just are not up on the technology).
I have not taken the time to read about all the features and compare the
price/performance etc. let alone go to a dealer and read manuals and the like
yet.
But I wanted to post to DAT-heads asap that there were indeed methods of using
a laptop for digital recording.
I can just see the confrontation at the door of the club:
"Gee, No, Sir, this is my laptop computer. I don't have any recording gear
with me at this "no recording permitted" show". Ahem.
As I do not have any time to read the DAT-heads digest myself, perhaps anyone
who has used one of these cards can offer their results to me via direct e-
mail to SAlpert5@AOL.com, or their opinions of these two companies, or
whatever other relevant info about this type of PC Card stuff. Thanks!

Subject: Truncated CDR extraction
Date: Sat, 16 Jan 1999 10:40:53 EST
I recently helped a friend get into this digital recording on a computer type
of stuff, and we encountered an interesting problem that was able to be
resolved, so I thought I would post the problem and resolution.
The problem was a CD recorder manufactured by Hewlett Packard, the HP-7200i
("i" is for internal, I have no idea if this problem would relate to the "e"
model as well).
Turns out, that in all respects, the unit seemed to work well on my friend's
new computer. However, if an "extracted" CD track was compared with one
extracted on my own older gear, there seemed to be a few seconds missing,
typically 2 seconds.
This was "maddening", as the extracted track was being truncated! Initially,
it was believed that the problem was the HP drive, since extracting with a
generic CD-rom player drive turned out to work fine with other software that
could talk to that, and the HP was always doing it wrong regardless of
software that I tried.
According to my friend, a call to Hewlett Packard did not provide any
solutions. They apparently tried some simple things they knew about, but were
unaware of any reports of this sort of problem. Although I agreed that it
seemed to be a "hardware" problem, I decided (just in case) to check the
Adaptec web site for "bug fixes" on Easy CD Creator (the software my friend
was using).
Lo and behold, there was a reference to this exact problem! The "fix" was
posted in mid-December, only a few weeks ago, perhaps a week before my friend
bought the gear. My friend downloaded the upgrade/bug fix, and all was well
after that. :)
Just thought I would let anyone using Easy CD Creator with HP 7200i drives
know about that.
PS: We first noticed the discrepancy on a compillation that we put together
that had two songs next to each other that needed to connect (no break between
them), and they extracted to the hard drive with a missing segment at the end
of the first track, so they no longer connected correctly.
Not having checked the "wav" files, and having burned a CD-r (disk at once
mode) the results were awful. Now with the upgrade download, all is fixed and
the compillation can be re-made from scratch.
If anyone wants to respond to this for any reason, please respond directly, as
I no longer have time to read DAT-heads.
