From: "jesse volner" <mentholiptus@hotmail.com> Subject: sampling questyon regarding WINAMP Date: Sun, 17 Jan 1999 18:00:24 PST Sorry for lack of DAT content, but I was wondering if any of you were familiar with WINAMP. My question is: If you put a song in MP3 format, from an analog cassette, would the WINAMP sampleing freq read 44.1 khz, or less? Do you need to use a CD or better, or will winamp still show as sampling at 44.1 khz? Thanks for you help and patience. This must be my 13th DATless question by now. :) jesse ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

From: Jonathan Haynes <biscuit@gol.com> Subject: That pesky space between tracks on CDRs... Help! Date: Mon, 18 Jan 1999 16:31:49 +0900 Well, as many have probably experienced by this time--I am trying to "restore" a recording corrupted by non-DAO software. Removing the digital silences placed between tracks on a live show. I am using Easy CD-DA Extractor 3 to rip the offending CD's tracks, then sending them into DartPro32 to laboriously cut/paste them into one file, manually removing the space between each track. Aside from being terribly time-consuming, this is leaving me with no track IDs! Plan B was to use the "Remove Digital Silence" feature of the aforementioned ripper software, which still left a small d/o where 2 seconds of digital silence used to be--not really acceptable for trading. Can somebody with experience in this procedure offer me a tip or two? AND, to compound things, I can't get Adaptec Easy CD Creator to recognize the 80 minute CDR format--has there been a patch written for this? Please comment on your experiences in this area. Jonathan

Or is it time to get a "real" CD burner and quite playing the swap game > (gosh, I feel so guilty when I do that...NOT!)? AFAIK there have only been two SMS strippers that pass start-id's. One is the kit published by Elektor Magazine, and the Philips CDR machines light the "copy prohibit" indicator even though the SCMS bits are reset to 00. The other is a commercial Japanese box that some of the Minidisc importers are selling (at twice the street price). According to posted reports it works on MD recorders but nobody has yet tried it on the Philips CDR machines.

It's what I'd expect. As far as I know the D5 always records "00". However, on plyback it outputs the subcode as it appears on the tape, including SCMS. What would you expect it to do? Andrew.
From: "Edwards,Kevin L" <edwardkl@dbs-systems.com> Subject: Fostex D5 / Sony D8 Digital Interconnect Date: Mon, 18 Jan 1999 09:52:53 -0500 Hope this is beneficial to others as well. I own a Sony TCD-D8 and a Fostex D5. The D5 has S/PDIF optical and AES/EBU coax digital interconnects. Two of the options for doing digital transfers between these include: 1. Sony cable POC-DA12P for optical S/PDIF input/output to Sony 7-pin 2. Core-Sounds cable with 7-pin to XLR (AES/EBU) What are the advantages and disadvantages (aside from cost) of these different methods of digital interconnect? Are there other options that provide features I may find useful?
From: Steve Gaarder <gaarder@actech.com> Subject: Re: How to create tracks when CD burning a long show Date: Mon, 18 Jan 1999 10:06:37 -0500 (EST) Goldenhawk's CDRWIN can do what you want. You do this be creating a "cue sheet", which is a text file containing the file name(s) and the times (in minutes, seconds, and frames) where you want the track boundaries to be. It will not insert blank space between the tracks (unless you ask it to). It's not shareware, but it's inexpensive, and a demo version is available. I know we're only talking about 1% or > so here, but I'm curious nonetheless. The principles involved here are the same as when recording between two analog recorders and the tape is moving faster on the recording machine. The playback would appear to be slower. In your example, the DAT @44.1K is using more samples to record the same information, so playback would be perceived as slower (if you could tell). Gordon Gidluck

I've got two sets of 10 tapes each. Some are 60m, some 90m. I'll offer to two people one of these sets for $40, postage paid by me. That makes it less than $4/tape, which is very likely to be less than I paid for the blanks on average (for all those uptight people out there) Here are the groups: 1: Dead 8/18,19/70 (3 tapes), 3/3/71, 4/11/78, 11/24/78, 10/9/82, and Phish 10/31/96 (3 tapes) 2: MMW 10/14/95, 4/13/96, Dead 10/11,12/84 (3 tapes), 2/14/69, 12/30/69 (2 tapes), and Phish 10/31/94 (2 tapes) First two to email me requesting a unique group number gets them. If I don't respond, that means you weren't fast enough on that reply button :) We'll work out the details after I get two people. You can tell me that either group of tapes is OK, but you can't have both. I'd like to get tapes to two different people. From: Daniel Barton <dfbarton@bellsouth.net> Subject: ooops, bought sblive can't get the digital i/o to record from Sony D8 Date: Mon, 18 Jan 1999 17:32:33 -0500 I know, I know I shouldn't have bought the sblive soundcard. There's still a chance I can swap it out from where I bought it. Meanwhile, I wanted to try it out and I was unable to record from a Sony D8 using the 7 pin Digital I/O connector / RCA adapter. I plugged the RCA into the S/PDIF input in the sblive digital I/O daughterboard which was cabled properly to the soundcard. I went into the audio hq/mixer and selected S/PDIF line in as the active input source, but when I tried to record from the D8 using either Cool Edit or SoundForge, no sound comes through the card. Am I missing something simple here? I'm able to record from analog tapes and lp's using the line in on the main soundcard, so I assumed that to record from a DAT it would simply be a matter of using the S/PDIF line in on the digital I/O daughterboard. This is just so I can try the card out. I will most likely be swapping it for a TurtleBeach Fiji or something comparable in the $200 range. Any suggestions on an alternative card and/or help with my sblive would be appreciated. I'm running a PII 450 with 2940UW and Yamaha CRW4416s. Thanks - Dan Barton

One possibility would be to borrow mics, but unfortunately I don't know (personally) any tapers in the area so that probally won't happen. From: Michael Schuster <schuster@panix.com> Subject: CDR 870 CD-RW oddity Date: Mon, 18 Jan 1999 19:48:43 -0500 (EST) Here's an oddity I noticed. Try this: Record anything on a consumer audio CD-RW disc, finalize, and eject. Now re-insert the disc. Since it is finalized, notice that the deck just displays "READING" but **not** "OPC" since this is a finalized disc. Now press ERASE then REC. It will display DISC and proceed to erase the table of contents. You are now ready to record on a blank CD-RW disc. Press REC and then PLAY and ... voila ... you are recording. What's wrong with this picture? Right! Where's the "OPC"? Woops! Has the deck really started recording on a disc that it has not performed a power calibration on?
