The January 30 KPFA marathon is gonna be great. The door to the vault has
opened wide this time, and Dick Latvala has brought out some GEMS for this
broadcast. I've got an hour and a half of stuff from 1966 that you have
never heard, and it's gonna knock you out. How about Jerry singing "She's
On the Road Again" with Dead? A monster "King Bee->Caution"? Another
version of "Hey Little One"?
I've also got the soundboard tape of 12/27/77, and the early shows of
2/13/70 and 2/14/70. I have the first set of 11/21/85 (of which the second
set was broadcast recently), and other cool things too numerous to
enumerate!
I will also be sneak-previewing the new Other Ones CD, and (probably)
playing some unreleased Other Ones from Shoreline 7/24/98.
This marathon happens Saturday, January 30, from 9am til 1am on KPFA 94.1
in northern California, and also on on KFCF 88.1 in Fresno CA and on KPFB
89.3 in parts of Berkeley.
AND, it'll be available on the web at www.kpfa.org - so people all over the
world can tune in!
Of course, this is a fund-raiser for KPFA, so I'm hoping you will all enjoy
the musical revelations and show your support for KPFA as the Grateful Dead
are doing by making the music available.
Sixteen hours of great music!
KPFA Grateful Dead marathon: Saturday, January 30, 1999, from 9am to 1am
pacific time. KPFA 94.1 and KPFB 89.3 in Berkeley, KFCF 88.1 in Fresno,
and WWW.KPFA.ORG on the World Wide Web!

is no reason to get nasty or hostile. I imagine you meant to send this to

Several people have asked for help buying a CDr and associated
equipment for a computer.
I'm in the same position and have an idea that might provide good insight
for newbies like myself.
Here's the idea:
If everybody that's using Cdr equipmnet would list the items they use
such as computer type(cpu, Hd, RAM, etc.), digital soundcard, SCSI
controller, CDr and burning software. Then make a short comment as to
the level of their satisfaction or recommended changes.
I'll go first with my incomplete, but intended set-up:
HP Pavilion Pent II 300mhz MMX, 48 RAM, 6 gigs $1300 10/98
Soundcard-Datport (USB connection) $200 (Soon to be available)
SCSI Controller-? Not much discussion so assuming any will work.
CDr- Plextor 4x12 $300.95 at Buys.com
Software- Cool Edit 95 (http://www.cooledit.com) $50
Box of Verbatims silver/blue disks $20
Very blissful, but concerned about connecting and experiencing success.
Thanks!

Perhaps to save the extra step when you're transferring existing analog
content (cassettes, records) to CD. Of course, you might be able to use
your DAT recorder as an external A/D, without actually having to bother to
create a DAT tape.
If you are going to use the computer to record analog content, and
can't use your DAT recorder to do the A/D conversion, you'll want
a good (and, alas, expensive) sound card; the A/D converters found in
under-$200 cards are terrible. I have made some nice recordings with my
Turtle Beach Pinnacle, which was over $400 (with the digital I/O
option) back when I bought it, but cheaper now; the Fiji, which is the
same card without the Kurzweil synthesizer chip, would do just as well. (A
quick check online shows that the Fiji with digital I/O would cost about
$250 delivered.)

Hi Dan,
I don't know why you're so sorry about buying a SBLive! I have one and find
it works great. I think the people on DAT-heads who complain about it don't
have one, and are just repeating something they heard somewhere on the
Internet. I take things like that with a BIG grain of salt. Although
Creative admits that the SBLive does reasample its digital inputs, I fail to
hear ANY audible difference, and I've listened hard, believe me! The specs
they've recently published on their website are VERY respectable and
certainly as good as anyone's DAT deck. The forced resampling is certainly
not ideal, but since I use the SBLive! to convert my 48Khz recordings to
44.1 in preparation for CD, the resampling is unavoidable anyway. As a
practical matter, the forced resampling is no problem at all for me.
For your question, I'd guess that the problem is that you're selecting
S/PDIF for playback, but not record. I don't use the controls that Creative
supplied with the SBLive!, but I can tell you what to do using the generic
Windows mixer. Double-click the little speaker in your system tray and
choose "Properties" from the Options menu. Click on the "Recording" button.
Make sure you have "SPDIF In" checked at the bottom of the "Show the
following volume controls" box. Click OK. I'll bet you'll find that you
have one of the other inputs selected. You can only choose one at a time.
Choose "SPDIF-in" and I'll bet you'll be cooking with gas. Good luck!

2 things related to CDR
1. After 8 mos of some pretty rigorous use, my Memorex 1622 died. I get a
message stating that it cannot calibrate the laser (from CDRWIN) when trying
to burn a disc. this is true for any brand of CDR or CDRW i use. The
warranty is for 1 year, but lets see how hassle free this will be.. I guess
I got what I paid for ($300 last summer)
2. Some questions arising on the reliability of ripping CD_DA data made me
do a test. I have a HDCD compatbile DAC at home. The HDCD process requires
that a specific bit always be present to turn the correct decoding filter in
the DAC on. A light on the front of the DAC illuminates when a HDCD
recording is being decoded.
I ripped a HDCD disk to a WAV file with my Panasonic 587 CD drive (IDE),
then played it back from Soundforge through my ZA2 to my DAC. It detected
the HDCD bit perfectly, and played the entire wav with the light lit. If for
some reason the bit had stopped appearing, the light does immediatly go out.
The HDCD bit is stored in the LSB (least significant bit) I believe of a
standard 16bit audio sample.
This leads me to believe that at least in my case, my CD is ripping audio
correctly. If for some reason it was not, the HDCD bit would be compromised.
Am I correct?

If you are using Sony's RK-DA10 or (-DA10P) cable, it won't work because
that cable is an *input* cable. Our 7-Pin-to-Coax cable will work fine.
Hope this helps!

Before buying another deck or digital I/O, try this - download the latest
drivers from the SBLive! website:
http://support.soundblaster.com/files/download.asp?product=sblive&OS=Win95
I had the same sort of problem with my PCM-M1 and the drivers that shipped
with the SBLive! The driver update fixed it right away.

Subject: SB Live resampling question
Date: Tue, 19 Jan 1999 14:09:07 -0800
Hi everyone,
I consider myself fairly knowledgable with regard to digital things, but I need
to ask a technical question.
If I have a 48 KHz song on my Sony D8 and want to digitally transfer it to my
SoundBlaster Live (which resamples to 48 KHz), what exactly happens? How does
the PC resample 1's and 0's at the same sampling rate and come up with
something different? Is an analog waveform created and then resampled?
How different will the resulting sound be? What sort of distortions will
happen and how noticable will it be?
I have read that it takes several generations through good D/A and A/D
converters for sound to noticeably degenerate (although I am sure some will
differ with this), so I am wondering if the digital resampling of the SB Live
will really discolor the sound of my recordings.
Thanks,
Craig

the standard core sound 7-pin to coax allows output from the 7-pin deck.
core sound also makes a 7-pin to coax which allows output/input from/to the
7-pin deck. more likely you need the new sblive drivers. known bug with
first release of drivers was muting of coax input. download new drivers. i
know it works because i have done it.

If you are using the Sony 7-pin to a single coax adapter, you should know
that it only works for coax into the DAT deck. It doesn't transmit an output
signal from the DAT deck.
