From: "rich880" <rich880@tmlp.com> Subject: DA-302 Questions Date: Tue, 19 Jan 1999 20:24:08 -0500 Hello all, I am seriously considering purchasing a Tascam DA-302. I am hearing conflicting stories on it's reliability, however. I would like to hear people's stories both good and bad.It sounds like an amazing machine and I hope it's worth the money. After all, it is the only dual DAT deck out there.Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the b/w Rich
From: DCin10AC <dcin10ac@mindspring.com> Subject: ISO: Sam Bush @ Boulder Theater 12/31/98 Date: Tue, 19 Jan 1999 20:04:31 -0600 Hey now, Looking for a copy of this supposedly incredible show. I spoke with Dean Norman last week and he indicated he gave out several board patches, so who's got em? Fess up! More than enough Sam or bluegrass to trade in return. Thanks, Dirk

I paid 4 bucks each. You can have them for $3 per tape, inclusive of shipping costs. David P. Gutelius Department of History Johns Hopkins University gute@jhu.edu
From: Aschultzy@aol.com Subject: Newbie Computer Hardware Question Date: Tue, 19 Jan 1999 21:39:23 EST I recently upgraded my computer memory and chip speed. I also purchased the Plexwriter after reading all the recommendations of this list. My question involves what kind of soundcard I should purchase. My computer will have two CD drives, a player and a recorder. Also, if possible I would like the soundcard to be compatible with the Sony D8 DAT, as my friend has just purchased one. Any help would be great. Thanks in advance. Andrew
From: "Ross Warren, Jr." <rwarren@i-america.net> Subject: Richard...you need to download the new drivers from SB Live Date: Tue, 19 Jan 1999 22:27:12 -0500 Richard, I only have the "value" version of this card (w/o digi input) but from what I've read in the past issues of DATheads is that Creative Labs was made aware of this problem (muting all digital input signals regardless of SCMS) and fixed it shortly after the card came out with new drivers available on their website...the card still resamples all to 48 khz, but at least you CAN use it... I think the people on DAT-heads who complain about it don't >have one, Do we have to have something to have an opintion about it? > and are just repeating something they heard somewhere on the >Internet. I take things like that with a BIG grain of salt. "Heard something on the Internet" like what? That it resamples everything? Sorry, you haven't exactly uncovered any rumor-mongering here. A fact that's damaging but true is not a rumor; and I take it you were implying others were rumor-mongering. If you've uncovered any rumors, please tell us about them or shut up. Then you say, >Although >Creative admits that the SBLive does reasample its digital inputs, I fail to >hear ANY audible difference, and I've listened hard, believe me! The specs >they've recently published on their website are VERY respectable and >certainly as good as anyone's DAT deck. No, they're not. It takes off 6 dB from the bottom end. This certainly ain't "pro quality", which is what Creative advertises. Gee, I don't know WHY anyone would get all hot and bothered over a little advertising error like that... > The forced resampling is certainly >not ideal, but since I use the SBLive! to convert my 48Khz recordings to >44.1 in preparation for CD, the resampling is unavoidable anyway. But the resampling of 48 to 48 then to 44.1 IS avoidable. You're confusing that with the unavoidable resampling from 48 to 44.1. The third, unnecessary step can be easily avoided by spending another $50 to get a Turtle Beach Fiji. > As a >practical matter, the forced resampling is no problem at all for me. It isn't? See how many knowledgable people still want to trade CD-Rs with you when you tell them you do transfers with a SB Live! card, and then tell me how practical your card is. It IS a problem for people like me who are concerned about digital integrity among the trading community, particularly for lossless media like DAT and CD-R. There is a reason people like me are concerned about keeping as much digital integrity as possible over generations of copies. With analog, continuous generational degradation can't be avoided; with digital, it can. If something as simple as not using a SB Live card can keep it from happening, then spend the extra money. Defending a bad choice by saying it isn't so bad because you can't hear a difference doesn't make it a less-bad choice. If you were talking about MD trading, where (I think) people have accepted that they're going to get generational loss, that's one thing. But when you talk about a lossless media like CD-R or DAT, anything that hurts digital integrity is seen as a bad thing. Even if you can't hear it in the first generation, it does build up if and becomes audible when people become lax about things that corrupt data. Particularly because these things are SO avoidable, I'd rather people avoid things like the SB Live! card. The average DAT Head tends to be more elitist than the average MD or analog trader because we've got a great medium where integrity can be kept over, theoretically, an unlimited number of generations. CD-R has the potential to be the same, except that many traders don't give a s**t about digital integrity, or burning properly, etc. (I say this having recieved a MUCH hiher percentage of badly-copied CD-Rs than badly-copied DATs.) This doesn't have to be the case. Peace, <> David

From: Seth Breidbart <sethb@panix.com> Subject: Re: SB Live resampling question Date: Wed, 20 Jan 1999 00:09:54 -0500 (EST) > If I have a 48 KHz song on my Sony D8 and want to digitally transfer it to my > SoundBlaster Live (which resamples to 48 KHz), what exactly happens? Based on my reading of the stuff at their site, the resampling handles clock mismatches. (I don't know how badly jitter affects it, or whether there's anti-jitter hardware before the resampling stage.) > How different will the resulting sound be? What sort of distortions will > happen and how noticable will it be? It will be slightly different, depending on the exact clock speeds. It probably won't be noticeable; certainly not through a computer's speakers. HOWEVER, if you have a master tape made at 44.1 kHz sampling (as many tapers are doing these days), that tape will be resampled to 48 kHz and back to 44.1 kHz; also, the resampling will not be a purely arithmetic resampling (based only on the bits read from the tape), but will depend on the clock speed of the deck used for playback. > I have read that it takes several generations through good D/A and A/D > converters for sound to noticeably degenerate (although I am sure some will > differ with this), so I am wondering if the digital resampling of the SB Live > will really discolor the sound of my recordings. It probably won't, for most values of "really". Seth

That's your call; for cloning, a second deck is a lot easier (albeit more expensive); however, the ZA2 will allow exact copies. (As someone has already noted, an upgrade to the SB's firmware should fix your immediate problem.) Seth

Arny Krueger had this to say when he tested one: Tests of the digital input of this card have been pretty disturbing. The digital input would not respond to test tones with the in-box drivers. Updating to the .1021 drivers on CL's web site fixed this problem. However, the digital input still seems to get unneeded DSP processing and corrupts sound quality by adding fairly broad 1 dB high peaks around 4 kHz, 10-12 kHz, and 16-20 Khz, with 44 kHz sampling. The digital output measures 1 dB down at 13.5 KHz, an -3dB at 17 khz, and -15 dB at 20 kHz. Really, if we're going to put up with performance like this we might as well use the analog inputs. > and are just repeating something they heard somewhere on the > Internet. I take things like that with a BIG grain of salt. > Although Creative admits that the SBLive does reasample its digital > inputs, I fail to hear ANY audible difference, and I've listened > hard, believe me! The specs they've recently published on their > website are VERY respectable and certainly as good as anyone's DAT > deck. They claim frequency response of 10Hz to 44kHz at -1dB and SNR (A-weighted) 96 dB. Arny actually measured D/A 30-15 KHz +0.1/ - 1.1 dB and 69dB. I think their specs only refer to pure analog loopback and don't involve their converters at all. Andrew.

From: "Christian Groves" <groves2@tcnj.edu> Subject: DAT Seeds needed for all D&T shows... Date: Wed, 20 Jan 1999 09:43:51 -0500 Hey all- With the new tour just started, I am looking for DAT tapers who are attending shows this tour to email me, and who are able to provide the seed for a Dave and Tim PermaTree. I know this hasnt worked out to well in the past, but if the structure remains relatively small, and with 5 or so people who are able to convert to analog or CDr, this could work out really nicely. I am willing to setup the structure for the permatree once i have confirmation from tapers that they are able to provide a good majority of the seeds. If any DAT tapers are attending a show with the intent to tape, please contact me, and we can make arrangements to seed the tree. Please contact me if you taped last nights show, or are planning to tape any of the upcoming shows on this tour. Once I have confirmation for a few shows, i will send out a sign up form in the near future. Please, no one contact me for signups until that time. Thank You. I open >up that file with Cool Edit and look for the blank spots. They're not hard ... Another good way to do this - which I find easier than using an audio editor for this level of precision - is to use a hex editor. There's an old one called HEdit version 2.1 that is still the best, IMHO, because it's easy to use and doesn't force you to load the whole file but allows you to work on disk (including cutting and pasting), and then saves all your changes once you finish. Anyway it's quite easy to find the gaps and delete them this way - you can actually see the blank space as zero bytes. Just make sure you delete bytes four at a time or you'll screw everything up (one sample = 16 bits x 2 channels = 4 bytes). Jamie
