Subject: Lucid NB-24/PCI-24 and Sony Portable DATs
Date: Wed, 20 Jan 99 08:56:18 -0800
Is anyone using the Lucid NB-24 card (or PCI-24) with a portable Sony
DAT, i.e. D-8 or D-7, connected directly via a Core Sounds cable or
similar cable? I'm looking for the cheapest way to get digital i/o from
my D-8 into my Mac, but I don't want to have to buy that Sony digital
interface (RMD-3K?) if I don't have to. I know that Sony claims its
digital outs on the D-8 are not truly S/PDIF.
Thanks

Subject: DA-30MKII (Is maintenance enough on an older deck?)
Date: Wed, 20 Jan 1999 11:38:04 -0600
Hello,
I have a newcomer question that I am sure someone here knows the
answer to. I am purchasing a used Tascam DA-30 MKII from a friend's
professional studio. I am sure there are lots of hours racked up on
the machine but I am also sure it has been meticulously cared for.
The deck has just been serviced and 'tuned-up.' I wanted to solicit
some opinions regarding the performance of heavily used decks. Is
there anything to watch out for that would not be addressed in a
servicing? Can anyone tell me what generally fails on older decks
(motors, rollers? ) and are these things fixable or will I end up
needing to replace the unit someday?
Bonus question if anyone cares to respond: Any opinions on the analog
out's on this deck? My Roland VS-840 (digital zip-disk recorder) of
all things does NOT have a digital input so I am forced to use the
analog inputs when I copy from the DAT. I had a few negative opinions
and can indeed hear that my Fostex D5's analog outputs are fairly
noisy.
Thanks in advance!

You'll find some user comments on our High End Binaurals web page.
They are truly excellent mics.
Most folks who record amplified music are using the DPA4061s. For
quieter music the DPA4060s are preferred.
Hope this helps!

Hey I went to turn on my D3 today and and it wouldn't turn on. I think my
sister left a tape in the deck overnight and I tried to turn the power on to
eject it but all it does is make a short buzzing noise and stop when I hit
power. On succesive attempts ot turn the power on nothing at all happens,
not even a buzz. So I've got tape stuck in a broken deck. Please help me
out. Also if anyone wants to buy this thing after it's fixed let me know.
I'll give you a great deal ;)

this message is to dat-heads and all the subscribers. over the last month i
have been ridiculed, pestered, and harrassed by phone and email over a tape
archive i have been liquidating...this is my last ditch effort to stop this
soap opera..even though at my attorneys request i have unsubscribed to the
digest i still read the archives almost everyday. i read the TAPE TRADING
STORY deal in #715 and this gave me a good idea.
please, please everyone must stop the email and phone calls immediatly or
i will contact the proper watchdogs concerning this site...which im sure,
will be of interest to them as dat and cdr transfers are the desirable form
of higher quality bootlegging. if for several days i do not recieve any
coorespondence concerning this i will forget the whole thing ever happened
and NOBODY is bothered. i wish it didnt have to come to this but im sick of
being bothered! thanks and THINK about it....

Reading all this stuff on SBLive got me wondering myself. I ended up doing
listening tests for the above scenario. The dat master (a Greyboy
SBD>SBM1>D8)was sampled at 48kHz. It would have been nice to have a dat
master at 44.1kHz and then a disk produced w the SBlive to insure that the
differences I heard weren't bc of the difnces in sampling rate.
Nevertheless, here's what I found:
Dat player Fostex D5, CD player Sony 8ES something. Both with digital outs
going into a Musical Fidelity X-ACT, 18 bit d>a convertor (if only this
thing would recognize the active input so I didn't have to keep switching
cables--aargh!). Basically what I found was that I could hear differences
bw the two. At first it was difficult, and I wasn't so sure I could hear
difnces. What made me end up convincing myself that there were indeed
audible difnces (to my ears) was by concentrating on the cymbals. The
dat-master's cymbals sounded more lifelike and less "averaged over
time/muddied together". I convinced myself that what I heard was indeed
true and true enough to overcome the fact that I knew which was which.
Nevertheless, the SBLive sounded darn good and I couldn't hear any added
hiss or artifacts- the dat master just sounded subtly better. Quite subtle
but nevertheless noticable. I really only concentrated on the cymbals
since I couldn't hear much difn'ce in the vocals, sax, guitar, etc. Like I
mentioned earlier, the fact that they were difn't sampling rates could
very well have affected the outcome and I didn't have any dat masters at
44.1 that were then transferred to disk with the SBLive. That would be a
better A/B for the SBlive and how it "sounds/affects the sound".......Pete
(being the audio purist I am, I wouldn't want a 44.1 dat transferred to CD
via SBLive. And for a 48kHz dat master I think their are better ways (such
as external D>A then A>D)to make a disk than with the SBlive, but
nevertheless, the SBLive hardly sounds like shit and difnces are very
subtle to my ears. Perhaps someone who has a 44.1 datmaster compared with
a 44.1 SBlive produced disk using the same listening D>A could comment
further)
ps-I believe the D/A, A/D study you speak of above is archived in pdf
format on Klays Andersons site. As well as the digital clone study. I
read them both and was not impressed.
pps- I also recently did a SBM1 vs DAP1 A>D A/B and thought the SBM1
empasized the high end more (cymbals, etc). I decided that there were
situations where I might prefer the SBM1 and situations where I might
prefer the DAP1(that synergistic rig thing/coupled with the actual sound at
a show). I think I would prefer the SBM1 in most situations a teeny tiny
tad more overall though. Lately though I've been running the DAP1 just bc
I think the SBM1/D8 combo is more hasslesome and the slight difnce the SBM1
makes isn't even worth the added hassle (what were they thinking when they
designed the SBM1 output cable, anyways?!?!)

Looking for tapers who can tape Tugboat Annie at these shows:
1/22 Brownies - NYC,NY (8 PM show)
2/18 Arlene's Grocery - NYC,NY w/The Jupiter Kings
2/19 Middle East - Cambridge, MA w/The Jupiter Kings & The Ivory Coast
2/20 The Showplace Theater - Buffalo, NY w/The Jupiter Kings & The Ivory Coast
I'll be getting the Buffalo show (probably a video w/soundboard audio.)
I'd love to get tapes of the others, or an audience tape of the Buffalo
show. If you can tape any of these, I'll pay back your ticket price, as
well as a bit more for these on any format. (VHS/8mm/CD-R/analog
tape/DAT.) (Tugboat Annie allows taping, but I don't know about any of the
venues except the Showplace. The Middle East should be okay with taping.
I also don't know what the other bands think of taping.)
If you have any questions, e-mail me. I can probably get answers about
venues/bands allowing taping for the February shows, but I may not have
time for the 1.22 show.
Thanks in advance,
Daiv

illegal bootleg material. If you see any items on e-bay that you feel should

Logical, yes, but not true for "pro" decks made by Sony or
Panasonic. They allow you to copy the tape, but Sony will still
increment the SCMS, while Panasonic copies the SCMS as-is.
Only the Fostex, Tascam, and Otari decks will actually reset
SCMS to 00 on all digital copies.
