From: William S Hayes <wh1m+@andrew.cmu.edu> Subject: Re: DA-302 tape stuck Date: Thu, 21 Jan 1999 17:15:56 -0500 (EST) I had a recent mishap with my DA-302 that may be informative. I put a tape in deck 1, and cued it up to about the 1-minute mark then hit stop. I hit play to begin my musical experience, but did not get what I expected. The display went to "- - - - - -" where it had previously shown the time, and the deck began to repeatedly play (for 3 seconds or so) then stop, then play, then stop and so on. No sound was coming out, and I could not get it out of the seemingly endless loop. There was no response to the stop button, and I was in a mild panic. After much gnashing of teeth and ringing of hands, I hit the standby button, and that got it out of the play-stop-play-stop loop. I ejected the tape, took a deep breath, and have had no problem since. Anyone have a clue as to what happened? HTH - Will

They have been fairly open to tapers in the past but there is no indication on their official web site. Also, anyone who gets any nice tapes from the tour, contact me and we'll trade for this or previous tour tapes. --Dan They still are taper friendly....only problem might be the venue. Sometimes they don't inform the venue or the venue itself decides not to allow taping. This happened to me a few days ago in Myrtle Beach. The guys at the door knew nothing about their open taping policy and after two sentences out of their mouths I knew it made no sense to debate with those guys. I went to the back door to find their boss who told me just about the same: " Doesn't matter if the band allows taping, it's up to us if we allow taping inside our venue"...Tried to talk to some Black Crowes road stuff but they pretty much told me the same thing. But since I got to know the band and their road manager pretty well in the last three months we both talked the House of Blues security head into allowing taping.I mentioned that the HOB in L.A. recently allowed taping Rollins Spoken Word show and that apparently helped. Once again, the Black Crowes even encourage fans to bring their tape recorders...they recently even changed their "photo policy" from "No photos or videos" to " Photos allowed but with no flash". Only thing they don't like is bringing bulky mics stands with you and place them near the stage...if you place them FOB you'll definitely have no problems at all. Karsten

I'm sure there are many other reasons >not to dump your DATs as well. Anyone disagree?? For most of these reasons, I keep a backup of every CD I made (and recieve in trades), and I rarely touch them. They're cheap enough to do this. Of course, audio CDs can't play at 48 kHz, and the sample rate conversion method you use may not be the best (it might have a fatal flaw). And for all we know, the design of CD-Rs themselves might have some flaw that won't allow them to last the 75-200 years they've been advertising--heck, for all we know, they might not even last 10 years! What if none of the dyes last as long as they're claimed to, because of who knows what? Plus, DAT is nice for allowing a continuous performance--with CDs, discs have to be changed once every 74-80 minutes, in the best case. Peace, <> David
From: Matto <Mowen5@concentric.net> Subject: A few equipment questions Date: Thu, 21 Jan 99 20:27:33 -0400 Hey now, For all you experienced folk out there, I have a few questions for ya. -Let's say that I wanted to take my old analog tapes and reels and transfer them over to DAT or CD. Is there such a product that will convert analog signal to digital signal? What about records to DAT/CD? -When a band records an album, it needs to be mastered before it is reproduced. What gear/equipment is necessary for this? Also what does this process involve? As you can probably tell from the broadness of the questions, I am looking to get some new equipment. Thanks for your time... peace matto mowen5@concentric.net http://www.concentric.net/~mowen5/index.html

There's always a story on the hrs. of use but supposedly the original owner used it a few time and it basically sat around for several years. It was in excellent/mint condition cosmetically and otherwise when purchased. I have used it in the field 6 times to tape what one might call "neo- hippie-type" bands. Its also been used to do D>A dubs and I probably put about a total of 250-300 hours on it. digital coaxial i/o analog rca i/o 1/4" mic in variable stereo mini headphone out Comes with: -stock carrying case -photocopied manual -Pro Digital rechargeable battery pack with float charger providing ~4.5 hrs. of power w/o mic. pre-amp draw -Stock battery is dead but I still have it if you want it. -ac wall wart (sp?) -Pro Digital modified cable to accommodate ac or dc power using stock power cord -cosmetically excellent shape Please see DAT Market posting for specs I've been told it has one of the best transports of any portable short of the HHB and Sony D10. Always worked flawlessly. I just don't use it enough for field use to justify keeping it. Taking reasonable offers. thanks for the bw
From: Dean <dean@deanos.net> Subject: Do I really need a digital in? Date: Thu, 21 Jan 1999 17:37:21 -0800 Hello All, I'm now able to burn DAT to CD using Soundedit16 and Toast. I just burned a DSBD to disc as an experiment and am having a hard time telling the difference between the two. This is w/o using a "digital in card" , just used the "analog input" in the back of my Mac. It sounds amazing. Aside from the fact most won't want to trade with me if they know I'm not using a digital-in soundcard, any other reasons why I would find the need to break out the cash for the "digi-in" soundcard? Beings that most of my collection was originally from analog sources does the extra digital>analog>digital really make that huge a difference? Also, does anyone know if you can add tracks to one large file without breaking up the large file into smaller seperate files. If I were to seperate the tracks into seperate files is there a trick to making it so that the tracks play without stopping and starting between each track. Thanks in advance Dean

DC, and I don't _think_ Sony has managed a patent on it yet. From: Ari Jaffess <ari@cloud9.net> Subject: 7502's extraction/CDr system check/SBLive! Date: Thu, 21 Jan 1999 22:33:55 -0500 (EST) Three CDr subjects going around: 1) Panasonic 7502 does digital audio extraction at 8 speed fine. I have had no problems. 2) My CDr setup is a P200 MMX/32MB RAM/3.1GB with an Adaptec ISA SCSI card (not sure the exact model) and a Panasonic 7502. I use a Plextor 12/20 SCSI reader as a source drive. The ISA card has been no problem and I won't spend money on a PCI card until I see something wrong. The 7502 is a great burner at a great price (I've seen it for $200 which is awesome for a 4X burner). I have had a few coasters (2 or so) out of the 300 or so CDs that I've burned, but with the cost of media these days, I don't cry about it. This set-up with the reader, writer, and card should be about $350 (pretty nice if you ask me). 3) The SBLive!: I got it almost immediately after it came out and didn't know about the double re-sampling. At first I was a little disappoited in hearing that, but I've done a few transfers of DAT>CD and they've sounded more than fine. I've never done strict comparissons and I don't have a magic ear, but I like what I hear and so do the picky DAT heads that I've made CDs for. If you look at CDs as something for storage and collection (I look at them as something to listen to in the car or give to people who don't have DAT decks) then maybe you should spend the extra money on the Turtle Beach, but it serves my needs fine. Sorry if anybody's scared that I'm infecting the Cdr gene pool out there. If you care that much, then don't trade Cdrs with people unless you know the card that they were made with...I write SBLive on the sources of all the CDs that I make...
