From: "Terry Weadock" <TERRY@domsys.com> Subject: "Baking" DAT tapes Date: Fri, 22 Jan 1999 16:34:27 -0500 I am sure most of us have heard about the old trick of baking certain reel to reel tapes to fix shedding problems, etc. Well, I have a DAT story that you may find interesting. I received a copy of dead 3/29/85 on a new 90 meter Maxell. The first time I played it, it had three little digi-glitches in the first song. They next time I tried to play it, only two glitches were heard. Well, I was making a clone the second time around, and decided I might as well let it run, since it looked like my original was going bad. After the clone was done, I noticed that my deck (a denon DTR-80p portable) was quite warm to the touch, the result of it being on the shelf above my amp. The tape was also quite warm. I then decided to spin another clone (for a trade) and lo and behold, all of a sudden the original tape played through without errors. It appears that the 3 hour "baking" that the tape went through on the 1st clone, fixed the errors well enough so that they could be read. This litle trick might come in handy for tapes that appear to be slowly going bad as well. Anyone else run into this? Also does the 64 times oversampling feature on this deck have anything to do with this result? Or do all DAT decks have oversampling. I have noticed that my 2 denons will play tapes without audible distortion that my other decks (a Panasonic 3800, and an AIwa home model) will not. Any comments about what may be going on here? From: Jonathan Miller <Kingfish@itw.com> Subject: 9-11-74 "second chance" tree DAT structure Date: Fri, 22 Jan 1999 17:04:30 -0500 Hi Guys, What's up? Here is the DAT structure for the 9-11-74 tree. The DAT structure should come out next weekend. Seeds have been mailed to both top branches. Thanks to the generous dubbing commitments by the DAT branches, this should be a fairly fast-moving tree SETLIST: This is the second set to 9-11-74, and it's like a companion piece to Dicks Pick's 7, which features material from the same night. It goes like this: Seastones > Eyes of the World > Jam (this doesn't get it's own track on the CD, but it's definitely not Eyes any more)> Wharf Rat plus Around n' Round from the third set. From: "jesse volner" <mentholiptus@hotmail.com> Subject: help with purchasing a DAT deck Date: Fri, 22 Jan 1999 14:26:15 PST I'm looking to purchase a stealth DAT recorder and a home deck. I'm looking at the: sony pcm-m1 and PCM-r500 Any feedback from any of you who have experience with these decks? Do the dual DAT decks make good clones? Does sony make any dual decks that the scms can be....whats the right word here...... ignored? What should I be looking for in a deck I will most likely keep for the next 5-7 years? And, whats the difference between 60m and 90m tapes? I'm new to this and all I can relate to this is 60 min VS. 90 min analog tapes. I would like to record for 2hrs. at a time at the highest possible quality and will most likley be using the portable deck to make clones if I don't buy a dual deck. Cables? Can SCMS prevent you from burning CDs from the "infected" tape? What are some ways around this? Any help is GREATLY appreciated!! thanks in advance, jesse.....again :) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

I used my d7 and the ZA2 with sound forge XP. Could the sample rate be a little bit screwed? Also - I'm looking for a good CDR-heads type digest. Anyone know of a list like this for CDR? And I'm making a DAT-Hate page. Anyone wanna contribute? :) =b

HAHA, fat chance they will care about this forum, and if they do it gets shut down and a new one (or two or three) will start........how would you like a $10,000 dollar fine for every tape for sale? It's such a great feeling not having to deal with buying all of those AA batteries and worrying about breaking the spring if I take them out too fast. I've used it for about 10 shows so far so it's already well on the way to paying for itself.
From: "Edwin T. Pankau" <pankau@fas.harvard.edu> Subject: 3/7/99 -- Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds in Santa Barbara, CA Date: Fri, 22 Jan 1999 21:48:48 -0500 I am a native of Santa Barbara, and would OH-SO-LOVE to go to the Dave and Tim show at the Arlington on Sunday, March 7, a dream concert. But, alas, I am here in Cambridge, MA, at school, with no chance of getting home for just this one event. Plus, I have a volleyball match that day, but that is another story. Anyway, what I am searching for is someone who would be willing to record this concert (DAT preferred) for me. I WOULD ABSOLUTELY BE ETERNALLY GRATEFUL. I have the capability of going DAT (or MD) -> CDR digitally, so I'd definitely make copies of this concert for any and all that would like it. The only catch is someone to record it. Please email privately, Ed
From: "Eric T. Nelson" <tourcrew@javanet.com> Subject: HELP! My deck is running fast Date: Fri, 22 Jan 1999 23:04:41 -0600 I am hoping someone out there can maybe offer me some advice... I have (2) Otari DTR-8S's. The one that I am using solely for recording was bought in the 2nd week of November from the DAT Store as a floor model in their Thanksgiving sale. Since then it has around 100 hours on it. Tonight as I was dubbing a tape I noticed that the record deck was running faster than the play deck. It sems to be running about 30 seconds faster roughly every 30 minutes. Since it is Friday evening, there is nothing I can do until Monday anyway, so i was hoping that someone can offer me some sort of advice, wisdom, saving graces...anything, really as I am freaking out over here. I don't know if this says anything about the DAT store's floor models or what, but I was told that the deck had basically no hours on it and had merely been used as a physical display so that customers could see what was inside the box. Any advice on this matter would be extremely helpful and appreciated. Thanks, Eric
From: "Barrett B. Gregory" <bookem@bellsouth.net> Subject: D8 tape ripping...Help, Please! Date: Fri, 22 Jan 1999 23:16:21 -0800 Was reviewing some tapes on the D8, all going fine, when suddenly it wouldn't go past LOAD...when I pressed PLAY, nothing would happen. Upon opening the lid to remove the tape. it had ripped in two. Thinking this was a unique occurrence, tried another tape...this time same thing happened, except tape had been pulled out about 3 inches, but not ripped. After having this happen on 4 tapes, decided maybe some kind fellow tapers could give me a clue as to whats happening..is there anyway to manually rewind dts with loose tape hanging out? Is there anything I could try at home to correct this? Have a few other home decks, but Marleyfest coming up, and need to use the D8 for that one...any help would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance, and for the bandwidth! Bebe

From: augwest@telepath.com Subject: manipulating dats Date: Sat, 23 Jan 1999 00:40:51 -0600 ok..I need the skinny on this...just how much (if any) manipulation is possible when producing a cd from dats? I record a small local jazz band twice a week in a small club with sometimes..loud people..what I want to know is can I seperate and remove some of the extraneous(sp?) noise...crowd murmur, glasses tinkling, etc. and if so what would be the best software for the job? From: "gamehenge" <gamehenge@sirus.com> Subject: Noise problem...anyone help? Date: Sat, 23 Jan 1999 02:20:00 -0400 Hey, I have this funny noise on a few of my tapes. It is like a pop or distortion when the music gets to a high point. I was wondering if it was a problem with the DAT its self or my reciver or speakers. I dont think that the problem could be on the DAT cause it was recorded with nice mic's {Schoeps CMC641}. Could anyone provide any help? Thanks in advance, Phil gamehenge@sirus.com
