From: "Ross Warren, Jr." <rwarren@i-america.net> Subject: re: Which one to get Date: Sat, 23 Jan 1999 21:18:36 -0500 Hey Joe, I've got both a D-7 and a D-100. I had to break down and get the D100 when the D-7 was being repaired (replacement parts from Sony took 3 months!). I run a set of AKG-391 (393) mics....sometimes as stealth using active cables and B-18 power supplies....to be honest, it's a royal pain....so for bar shows and the like, a set of CSB's or HEB's or whatever might be the easier choice. Anyway, I'd recommend the D-100 or in your case, the M1 (same deck but w/o SCMS). Just plan on using two sets of AA batteries for a long show....most all shows do have a break, where you can run to the bathroom and switch out a set. Since you won't be giving a line out, a fresh set should last around 2 hours or thereabouts. Just don't over use the light (hey, it's easier to get caught stealthing if you do.) Whatever you do, don't rely on the rechargeable Nickel-metal Hydride batteries...they are very finicky...you never really know how much of a charge they have on them...sometimes you might get a full 2 hours, other times less than 15 minutes....I've had my ass saved more than once by having kept a spare set of AA alkalines on me or scoring some from a stranger than just happened to have some in their car... Plus overall, the D100 (M1) has a quieter preamp than the D-7(D-8) did. And when your deck needs servicing (they all will, its just a matter of time) hopefully getting spare parts on a newer designed deck will be easier than on a discontinued model like the D-8....it might not be "discontinued", but it's definitely on it's last legs as a production model... From: Andrew Gustin <gustin@leland.Stanford.EDU> Subject: Re: WHY CAN'T I USE 90M BLANK DAT TAPES??? Date: Sat, 23 Jan 1999 19:34:54 -0800 Tom, it varies by the deck. The issue is the thickness of the tape--the longer tapes are thinner, presumably to fit more tape material into the DAT shell. As a result, some decks are prone to wear out faster with the thinner tape. Some do not even accept these tapes. Some, on the other hand, do accept them and use them fine despite warnings in the manual. Even some "better"/more expensive decks do not accept them, wheras chaper ones do, e.g. Tascam DA 30 vs DA 20. Yes, it is inconvenient to split 2.5 hour Dead shows onto two tapes, but not as inconvenient as serious transport problems in the middle of a big trade. Perhaps others can fill in for me where my technical expertise falls short. Also, I believe there is a very useful section on this at the DAT-Heads FAQ, available via the DAT-Heads web site. Andy > >Hello fellow dat-heads, > >i am a newbie to dat recording. Can anyone tell me WHY it is bad for all >DAT machines to use 90m blank dats for recording and playing??? > >is it bad for all DAT machines to play or record on 90m tapes??? My first set of Lith Batteries got me through two Page/Plant shows (about 4 hrs) and then played tapes for about one week after that!! The second set of Lith batteries lasted for two more two hour shows, but during the last few songs of the second show, the battery indicator was flashing, as they were just about dead. Just today, I taped a friends band and experimented with regular, everyday AA batteries, and I swear those suckers didn't even last two hours!!!
From: "Gary Davis" <gdavis@loop.com> Subject: DATS>MAC Reply-to: gdavis@loop.com Date: Sat, 23 Jan 1999 22:31:00 -0800 If you don't have a digital soundcard yet, consider getting a stand- alone audio CD recorder with a good sample rate converter ($554- $1094). For straight-forward CDs, just make them on the stand- alone. But if you want to load music into your computer for editing, just burn a CD first (you can use an erasable disc now for this part of the process), and then use "audio extraction" to read the disc into your Mac with the same CDR drive you bought for writing CDs. This way, you don't need a special digital soundcard at all. Of course this works on the PC too, but with digital soundcard prices still quite high for the Mac, it's even more desirable over there. --Gary

From: Kurt Vogel <kwv@chem.Stanford.EDU> Subject: Source for "Dummy" Batteries? Date: Sat, 23 Jan 1999 23:45:06 -0800 (PST) I've just rigged up an external rechargable battery system for my D100 using a Radio Shack 2-D cell battery holder and a pair of "Hi Capacity" NiCd rechargables (these things are rated 4500 mAh so I should get around 10 hours record time, I hope-- testing that now!) I want to power through the battery compartment because: a) I want the deck's battery level meter to function and b) I dont want another external connector going into my deck where it can get knocked out easily. I rigged up two "dummy" batteries I fashioned out of wooden dowels and some strips of metal to make contact with the terminals, and modified my battery-compartment door to allow a wire to pass through. These home-brew dummy batteries are sub-obtimal in design, and so I am wondering if anyone knows a source for "real" dummy batteries (if such things exist), or if anyone else has done what I am trying to do and has figured out a good solution for this problem. With the charger, batteries, and battery holder, this system runs about $35 and is stealthy, and regular D size alkalines could be used if necessary. Thanks for any help! Kurt

Another caveat, the 90meter tapes are thinner than the 60 meters tapes, but this hasn't affected my use of them either. I know that I may be living on borrowed time, but to me, it's definitely a whole lot easier to record longer-than-2-hour programs on 90 meter tapes than to split them up. Chuck

About six months before I got the unit I was seeing on compuserve either plans to build one or someone supplying one that used D-cells....but by the time I got the unit, he didn't answer email and no one else knew. So sorry if its was once an FAQ, but I've never seen the answer. Thanks radiopaul9@aol.com ==================================== A battery pack for the D7/D8 is child's play. Go to your nearest Radio Shack and pick up a 4 D-Cell battery pack for around $10. Then, call Sony Parts 800-488-7669, and get a Cable cord ($1.65) part# J-2501-034-A. Solder the cable cord to the supplied and soldered wires that the battery pack comes with, and you are in business. I carry mine in a heavy zip-lock plastic bag. It will power the d7/d8 for a long, long time. Total cost, with 4 D-Cells, around $15. Visit my Digital Photo web page http://www.enteract.com/~ckross/
From: "Ross Warren, Jr." <rwarren@i-america.net> Subject: re: shelf life of DATs (and what happens when they die?) Date: Sun, 24 Jan 1999 10:29:12 -0500 Andrew, You are correct....after somewhere around 5 years, depending on the environment they've been stored in, DAT's will develop errors/dropouts. Remember DAT, while digital, has the data stored on a metal layer bound to a plastic tape. This is a chemical "mix", and as such it will deteriorate over time, thus causing errors. Best way to back up a DAT is to either clone it to a fresher tape, back it up to a CD-R or even better trade it with several people so that it becomes "public" property, so if your tapes die, then "someone" out there will likely have a playable, recoverable, copy. That's why the last laugh may be on all these "show-hoarders" out there that won't trade with other folks...unless they are backing up their tapes religiously, eventually their prized shows will be useless pieces of crap. Peace, Ross rwarren@i-america.net infinite diversity, infinite combinations

Second, what happens > after the 5 or however many years? Do the tapes just develop > errors/dropouts? Do they literally fall apart or get stuck in decks? > What I can I expect? The conventional wisdom says 5 years but many folks have tapes that have outlived that benchmark. I backup the tapes I really care about to new DATs every 3-4 years. Some of my audio grade DATs (6 yrs old) have started to get small "pops" every 20 or 30 seconds. They don't seem to cause head clogs or tape jams, but then again, I don't listen to them very much because of the "pops". You could backup to CDR, but even that life span has recently been called into question (25 yrs? 10 yrs?). One question I have is what do I do with the old tapes? Throw them away? Even if they have no errors, trading for B&P seems like I'd ripping someone off (getting a new tape for an old, used one). I've successfully recorded over some of the bad old tapes, but I'm sure the life span won't be another 5 years. What's everyone doing with their old tapes? Barnett
